artists and collectives

Outpost Project, an inaugural street art festival that will be the largest in the southern hemisphere,
has today announced its headline works by artists and collectives from around the world.

More than 150 artists and collectives will transform Cockatoo Island between 4 November and
11 December, with static and live street art creations including aerosol art, stencilling, paste-ups,
stickers, cup-rocking, sculpture and installations.

Curated by the Sydney Harbour Federation Trust’s programming team and aMBUSH Gallery, the
artist line up includes work by street artist Banksy as part of the Oi You! Collection, being seen in
Australia for the first time. International street artists Anthony Lister, Ethos, Kid Zoom, DMOTE
and ROA will be in Sydney to create new work on Cockatoo Island for Outpost.

“Outpost Project brings together the most celebrated local and international street artists for a
vibrant festival that will transform Cockatoo Island,” said Geoff Bailey, Executive Director of the
Sydney Harbour Federation Trust.

“Visitors can expect a packed program of exhibitions spanning a wide range of street art styles
along with live art performances, installations and large-scale murals created on the island,” said
Mr Bailey.

New York-based, Perth-born artist Kid Zoom will return home to create one of the highlight works
of the festival. The large-scale new work will be unveiled on the opening night and touch on
themes of homecoming and the artist’s suburban upbringing in Australia.

Brazilian artist Ethos and Belgian artist ROA will create major new works onto walls on the
eastern edge of Cockatoo Island. ROA, known for his giant murals of animals, is expected to
draw inspiration from Sydney’s local wildlife.

Four giant inflatable sculptures by New York-based, Brisbane-born artist Anthony Lister will be
placed around the island and hung from the eaves of buildings. Lister will paint directly onto the
large-scale inflatables onsite.

Concrete sculptures of household items such as armchairs and washing machines created by
Sydney artist Will Coles will pop up across the island, including a giant concrete fish-shaped
soy sauce container that will be hoisted from a crane and hung against the backdrop of Sydney
Harbour.

Melbourne-based street art collective Everfresh Studio will create a large-scale collaborative
mural measuring 24 by 3.6 metres during the first week of the festival. Everfresh Studio members
including Phibs, Meggs, Makatron, RONE, REKA and PRIZM will paint and attach paste-ups
and stickers onto an oversized ‘No Trespassing’ sign attached to a cliff wall.

During the festival’s first weekend, Sydney-based artist Sprinkles and Gold Coast artist SHIDA
will paint two large-scale billboards live on Cockatoo Island. The works will form part of Project
Ugly, a series of 22 billboards curated by Sydney artist EARS (Daniel O’Toole), whose work is
also featured.

1 Sydney-based artist Ben Frost has curated Pastemodernism 3, a one-room exhibition featuring
the work of more than 100 local and international street artists that will be the largest paste-up
group show ever seen in Australia.

More than 2000 original T-shirts inspired by street culture will be hung as part of an exhibition
curated by Eddie Zammit, founder of the world’s only T-shirt magazine. Nex-T will be the most
comprehensive exhibition ever presented of T-shirts inspired by street culture.

The May Lane Street Art Project, an exhibition of large-scale street art created at May Lane in
Sydney’s St Peters, will be presented in an industrial space on Cockatoo Island. The exhibition is
presented by Bathurst Regional Gallery as part of a national tour and documents a range of street
art styles including aerosol art, paste-ups and stencilling.

The work of stencil artists will also be displayed as part of an exhibition of the finalists and
winning entrants to the 2011 Australian Stencil Art Prize.

The evolution of street art – a global art movement established in New York in the 1970s – will be
portrayed in the Foundations exhibition. Featuring the work of at least two generations of street
artists, Foundations offers insights into the development of the genre.

The grand final of Skateboarding Australia’s 2011 Pro/Am tour will be hosted on Outpost Project’s
closing weekend (10 and 11 December) and will see the country’s most talented skaters compete
amongst the street art works.

A vibrant program of live music, workshops and artist performances will be announced next
month.

Bronwyn Johnson to hand over the CEO reins of the Melbourne Art Foundation

The Board of the Melbourne Art Foundation (MAF) yesterday announced their current CEO
and Director of the Melbourne Art Fair, Bronwyn Johnson resigned on
16 August and that a search is underway for her successor.

In thanking Bronwyn for her 16 years with the Foundation, MAF chairman Bill
Nuttall said “Bronwyn has been the driving force at the Foundation.
We have benefited from her rare combination of artistic, administrative and
commercial skills, strategic vision with a sincere appreciation and interest
in contemporary visual art.

“She has made a singular contribution to the art world of Australia, assisting
artists and galleries and the art community in general. Bronwyn has built
the Melbourne Art Fair from almost scratch after taking over the Australian
Contemporary Art Fair in 1995. Her drive and commitment to the visual arts
and assisting the livelihoods of living artists has led to the Melbourne Art Fair
becoming one of Australiaʼs major events for the visual arts and Melbourneʼs
pre-eminent art weekʼ.

“In recent years, she has added significant programming to the art fair,
including keynote lectures, an education space, project rooms for the independent art
sector and the Melbourne Art Fair Commission. Also, the introduction of the
Melbourne Art Foundation Awards for the arts is her inspiration.
We have had four awards to exemplary visionaries and artists, most recently to Mark
and Eva Besen and Fiona Hall at a recent dinner held at the Art Gallery of NSW.

“I recall hiring Bronwyn in 1995 as a young woman with a strong reputation as an arts
administrator having worked with John Truscott at the Melbourne Festival and being involved
in the Melbourne performing arts scene for many years. Her transition to the visual
arts sector has been a boon to us having grown it so successfully.
I hope she will remain connected to the visual arts in Australia. But her skills,
drive and vision will be of great benefit to whoever is lucky enough to have her
work with them in the future.

“While we are disappointed that Bronwyn is leaving, we fully understand that
after 16 years itʼs more than fair for her to explore the next phase of her career.
The Board very much appreciate her decision to allow a lengthy period for an orderly
transition to a new chief executive.”

Copyright Agency Limited launches Artlike competition on Facebook
Copyright Agency Limited (CAL), a leading Australian rights management organisation,
today announced the launch of Artlike,
an art appreciation initiative using social media platform, Facebook.

Artlike is an art competition run through CAL’s Artists’ Resale Royalty Facebook page –
where budding artists can submit their work to CAL for posting on the page,
with the winner chosen by the amount of ‘Likes’ received.
Since June 2010, CAL has played a larger role in the visual arts sector after being
selected to manage the artists’ resale royalty scheme on behalf of the Australian government.

CAL’s Visual Arts Manager, Tristan Chant, explains that Artlike is designed to help CAL
engage with the arts scene by providing the platform for artists to reach broader audiences.
‘Exposure is something up and coming artists cannot do without. And while the traditional
means of getting people to see your art won’t be going anywhere fast, digital media is
opening up more opportunities for the young artist to make a name for themselves,’ says Tristan.

Tristan says the competition will effectively use Facebook’s existing functionality to give
artists an opportunity to show their talents. ‘Artists are realising the value of social media
in showing others what they can do. They can test the waters with their works

Australian artists’ resale royalty scheme: Artlike competition

About the artists resale royalty scheme

The artists’ resale royalty scheme started on 9 June 2010.

Under the scheme: commercial resales of artworks must be reported;

and a 5% royalty is payable on some resales.

The Australian government appointed Copyright Agency Limited (CAL) to manage the scheme.

Key features of the scheme:

it applies to resales of existing as well as new works;

it applies to a range of original artworks, included limited edition prints authorised by the artist;

it does not apply to a private sale from one individual to another;

a royalty is not payable on the first change of hands after 9 June, but all resales must be reported;

a royalty is not payable on resales for under $1,000;

the scheme will be extended to artworks from countries that have similar schemes.

About CAL

Copyright Agency Limited (CAL) provides simple ways for people to reproduce, store and share words, images and other creative content, in return for fair payment. In doing so, it connects the creators, owners and users of copyright material.

Online Poster/Visual Media Competition

To promote Sexual Violence Awareness Month (SVAM), this October in Australia, Living Well is holding an Online Poster/Visual Media Competition. This Competition is now a joint project with 1in6.org from the USA, as equal partners, we are committed to assisting men who have had unwanted or abusive sexual experiences to live healthier, happier lives.

1in6

In partnership with 1in6.org, we are offering three prizes, totalling $1500 in prize money, to the artist/s who create a Poster or Visual Media which best expresses the theme:

‘Sexual abuse is something that I experienced… It’s not who I am.’

Art is a powerful medium that can both bear witness and support personal and social change. This competition provides an avenue for artists, art students, art educators, art therapists, anyone, to use their creativity to express and explore this complex issue.

Rationale for this theme

The statement ‘Sexual abuse is something that I experienced… It is not who I am’ was made by a man attending the Living Well Service. It has been chosen as the competition theme for the way that it both acknowledges a man’s experience of sexual abuse and his commitment to living a life defined by him.

Research tell us that 1 in 6 men will experience childhood sexual abuse and that on average they will take 22 years to tell someone about it, 10 years longer than women. When men do come forward, they often talk of their being limited public awareness or supportive accounts that speak to their experience.

In our work with men who have been subjected to sexual abuse our challenge is to find ways to both acknowledge the profound horror, pain and difficulties produced by sexual assault, whilst simultaneously noticing and supporting a person’s struggles, ways of managing, holding on to hope, engaging with and commitment to living a full life. At Living Well and 1in6 we see our work as inspiring, hopeful, transformative, life supporting work that acknowledges that people’s lives are multi-storied. We are looking to reward and promote the poster/visual media that navigates this complex terrain and best addresses the identified theme ‘Sexual abuse is something that I experienced… It is not who I am.’

Visual Media can raise awareness and become inspirational

Rosie the Riveter Obama: Hope
J. Howard Miller’s “We Can Do It!”, commonly referred to as Rosie the Riveter The 2008 presidential campaign Obama “Hope” poster by Shepard Fairey

Note: Take a look at the gallery of posters we have collected. In referring to this material, we would ask that competition entrants see these resources as a record of what has already been produced, not what might be produced. In developing an entry for submission, please be aware that posters and visual media that utilise offensive or sexualised imagery will not be included in the competition.

We very much welcome entries in both traditional poster format and ‘new visual electronic media’ from anywhere in the world. There is no requirement to include or not include the text ‘Sexual abuse is something that I experienced… It is not who I am’. The intention is for the Poster/Visual Media to become an expression of this theme in ways that connects with the viewer and conveys the message.

$1500 in Prize Money

  • 1st prize – $1000 (Awarded by Competition Panel)
  • Runner up – $250 (Awarded by Competition Panel)
  • People’s choice – $250
  • Competition Panel will be announced soon – watch this space.
  • Submissions to be received by the 3rd of October 2011
  • Winners to be announced on the 26th of October 2011

Competition Panel

Accepted posters/visual media will be posted to the Competition Entries page of this site to support voting for the people’s choice. It is also planned, with artists approval, for a montage of submitted posters/visual media to be developed and posted online in video format.

How you can help. In order to assist us in promoting this event, as well as increasing awareness and support for those who have experienced sexual violence, we ask that you let as many people as you can know about the competition, be it by email, word of mouth, on Facebook, twitter, Tumblr, or some other means. Please distribute this Competition Flyer and/or link this page.

Copyright Agency Limited launches Artlike competition on Facebook

Copyright Agency Limited (CAL), a leading Australian rights management organisation, today announced the launch of Artlike, an art appreciation initiative using social media platform, Facebook.

Artlike is an art competition run through CAL’s Artists’ Resale Royalty Facebook page – where budding artists can submit their work to CAL for posting on the page, with the winner chosen by the amount of ‘Likes’ received.

Since June 2010, CAL has played a larger role in the visual arts sector after being selected to manage the artists’ resale royalty scheme on behalf of the Australian government.

CAL’s Visual Arts Manager, Tristan Chant, explains that Artlike is designed to help CAL engage with the arts scene by providing the platform for artists to reach broader audiences.

‘Exposure is something up and coming artists cannot do without. And while the traditional means of getting people to see your art won’t be going anywhere fast, digital media is opening up more opportunities for the young artist to make a name for themselves,’ says Tristan.

Tristan says the competition will effectively use Facebook’s existing functionality to give artists an opportunity to show their talents. ‘Artists are realising the value of social media in showing others what they can do. They can test the waters with their works before going the whole hog in an exhibition.’

The winning artwork will be published in the print and electronic editions of Calendar – CAL’s quarterly magazine along with a short profile of the artist, which will be sent to over 15,000 creators all over Australia. CAL will be running this competition periodically every three months to coincide with Calendar’s quarterly publishing schedule.

‘Artlike offers participants considerable exposure, as well as the added benefit of review from their peers. From CAL’s perspective, we hope that the additional traffic to our Resale Royalty Facebook page, will help to spread the word about the royalties being paid to artists under the artists’ resale royalty scheme,’ Tristan adds.

To find out more about Artlike or to download the application please click here. Please read and agree to all Terms and Conditions before entering.
