About the artists resale royalty scheme
The artists’ resale royalty scheme started on 9 June 2010.
Under the scheme: commercial resales of artworks must be reported;
and a 5% royalty is payable on some resales.
The Australian government appointed Copyright Agency Limited (CAL) to manage the scheme.
Key features of the scheme:
it applies to resales of existing as well as new works;
it applies to a range of original artworks, included limited edition prints authorised by the artist;
it does not apply to a private sale from one individual to another;
a royalty is not payable on the first change of hands after 9 June, but all resales must be reported;
a royalty is not payable on resales for under $1,000;
the scheme will be extended to artworks from countries that have similar schemes.

Promote your art through CAL’s Artlike competition
Artlike is an art competition run through CAL’s Artists’ Resale Royalty Facebook page – where budding artists can submit their work to CAL for posting on the page, with the winner chosen by the amount of ‘Likes’ received.
The winning artwork will be published in the print and electronic editions of Calendar – CAL’s quarterly magazine along with a short profile of the artist, which will be sent to over 15,000 creators all over Australia. CAL will be running this competition periodically every three months to coincide with Calendar’s quarterly publishing schedule.
‘Artlike offers participants considerable exposure, as well as the added benefit of review from their peers. From CAL’s perspective, we hope that the additional traffic to our Resale Royalty Facebook page, will help to spread the word about the royalties being paid to artists under the artists’ resale royalty scheme,’ says Tristan Chant, CAL’s Visual Arts Manager.
