Do it on Darling!
When: Thursday, March 1, 2012 at 12:00pm until Sunday, July 1, 2012 at 11:30pm

The newly founded Rozelle Contemporary Art Precinct (RCAP)* is giving you the chance to
get down and creative along Darling St to win a great big Darling package
‘(and we might just throw in a pretty pink tiara as well).
So what do you have to do?

1. Take your shot

Use your skills to make a temporary scene highlighting the people and places of
Darling St (see map below) – create a temporary artwork, dress up, do a photo shoot,
use it as a backdrop for a music video or performance piece – whether you’re an artist,
performer, musician, designer, photographer or socialite show us the best you’ve got and
capture your darling on film or photo.
Not to put a leash on your creativity – feel free to be cheeky,
but keep it clean this is a family event.

2. Make the brag

Upload your done little darling to “Do it on Darling” web page where it will be
featured on RCAP website and Facebook page. Show everyone how awesome it is and
get your friends to LOVE it to win the people’s choice award. The Judges’ choice
award will be based on concept, technique and impact.

3. See if you scored

You’ll get your chance to be in the spot light and
maybe even wear a pink tiara and winner’s sash!
Each month we will showcase a selection of finalists on the RCAP website
to go in the running for the major grand prize at the end of the year.
The clever Winners will receive complimentary tickets to special arts events,
a package containing vouchers from some of the very best restaurants and cafes
in Rozelle and let’s not forget bragging rights across some wicked websites and
media as well as be featured in some very groovy RCAP events.

(Un)seen Sculptures 2012 : Call For Submissions
(Un)seen Sculptures is an outdoor mobile 3D augmented reality art show
featuring works by Australian and international artists.
It was first staged in April 2011 as part of the Surry Hills Festival.
It was subsequently staged in Melbourne in conjunction with the Australian Centre of Virtual Art,
and in Cairns as part of the Cairns Festival. In 2012, it is being presented by dLux MediaArts
as part of Sydney Art Month (http://www.artmonthsydney.com.au/) at sites around Rozelle
(including Callan Park), and we are currently looking for submissions.

WHAT IS A 3D AUGMENTED REALITY ART SHOW?
Imagine, if you will, a sculpture walk composed entirely of virtual 3D works that have
been “placed” at specific geographic locations. People who visit those locations with an
iPhone or Android smartphone and a free app called the Layar Reality Browser -
http://www.layar.com/ – will be able to view and interact with these works,
which will appear on the screen of the phone as if they had been superimposed on the landscape.
(As part of the interaction with the work, people may also be able to hear
sound/musical compositions or view images, text or other online components.)

For examples of works that appeared in (Un)seen Sculptures 2011, visit the website – http://www.unseensculptures.com/
WHAT FORM SHOULD THE SUBMISSIONS TAKE?
Submissions should be based around digital 3D works that can be rendered comfortably
on the slower processors of mobile phones, and should conform to the constraints
based on works by the Layar platform. Namely:

• 3D works must consist of no more than 5000 polygons.
• Texturing can only be done via UV mapping using diffuse colour textures
(bump maps & normal maps are not supported.) UV maps may include PNG transparency.
• Models themselves cannot be animated BUT their textures can be.
• Any model/texture files that are used should be kept small to avoid
large downloads & long wait times for display.

For more detailed guidelines on preparing 3D works for display via the
Layar platform, refer this presentation -

http://www.slideshare.net/layarmobile/layar-3d-content-creation-tips-and-tricks

In addition to 3D models, the submission may include mp3 files, images or
text that can be accessed when the 3D models are “clicked on” by users.
(As with models and textures, large files should be avoided.)
GUIDELINES FOR SUBMISSIONS

Submissions should include the following:

• Name of artist

• Title of work

• Any additional subtitles to be displayed in Layar

• 200 dpi image of the artwork (for printed promotional purposes)

• An artist statement of short description of the work

• Link to the artist’s website

• 3D files of the artwork (either submitted in Layar 3DS format – see above presentation
link for guidelines on preparing this – or OBJ format with all accompanying material & images files)

• Any accompanying media files (ie text, image, mp3) and instructions as to how they should
be accessed (eg when 3D work clicked; when within a certain distance of the works’ location, etc).
(NB: If you wish to host the media yourself or have a website that you would like
accessed upon interaction with the work, we would be happy to consider supporting this as well.)

• If you have other requirements, such as a model that makes use of the Layar animation API
(http://layar.pbworks.com/w/page/45649854/Tutorial%20APIv6%20-%20Add%20animations%20to%20a%20layer),
feel free to submit these requirements for consideration.

Any submissions or questions should be sent to filmcement[at]gmail.com

DEADLINE

Provisional deadline for submissions is 1 March, 2012

In studio with Melanie Waugh

18 02 2012

1) Who is Melanie Waugh?

I’m from Bellingen in Northern New South Wales. I’ve lived in Sydney for 12 years with a recent three year hiatus spent in Barbados. I studied my under grad at The National Art School and post Grad at CoFA and I am currently completing an artists residency at Curwoods Lawfirm.

2) Explain your current body of work?

Painting for me is a gateway into another world. My current body of work is a series of large oil paintings that are based on my time spent working on a boat in the Caribbean particularly Barbados. They are narrative figures in landscape. A pictorial diary of my time spent in the sun observing this international playground. I think of the scene I want to paint, which is usually a nostalgic memory and then scour the internet or my own photo library to try and find something like it often using collage or photoshop to piece it together. These are happy memories but often for me with a cloud of doubt or sadness over them because I remember the way I felt at the time… often feelings of love lost, missing home, the misplacement of trying to fit into another culture. I don’t like to over intellectualise the creative process and find I more like talking with colour. I’m very interested in colour relationships, what happens when you place one colour next to the other. I’m about the business of painting the actual physicalness of it and I hope this comes out in my work.

3) If you can pick one artist as an inspiration, who would it be and why?

The artist who first comes to mind is the American painter/sculptor Eric Fischl. I am hugely influenced by him. His subject matter and loose painting style. Fischl’s brushmarks are bold and direct. His ability to paint somewhat beautiful paintings with a sinister subject matter. He brings the nude into contemporary art. I have played with this idea for years now. I find his paintings infinitely fascinating there is a real sexiness to them. I also love for obvious reasons as both of them live/ lived on tropical islands Peter Doig and Gaughan.

4) With your own art/art practice, where would you like to be in 10 years?

Painting full time, settled looking at the sea from my huge studio mixed with travel. I’d like to be influencing the Sydney art market towards young female painters. I would like to have done a lot of different residencies…documenting this crazy world…..

5) How are you finding the current art market?

I’m lucky in many way because I’m still experimenting and painting for myself uninfluenced by the G.F.C. and uninfluenced by external forces.  My paintings sell steadily. I’m too fresh at this business to really comment on this as I’m not yet gallery represented (but I’m taking applications).

6) Name four things that you cannot do without in your studio?

Itunes, the radio, at the moment its mainly 702 and podcasts! I love listening to other artists talking as I paint and there’s so much out there..Definitely cups of tea, I have about ten a day and for some strange reason I’ve gotten into the habit of wearing the same pair of shoes whenever I paint and don’t feel right picking up a brush if I don’t have them on. Sorry that’s five.

7) What was the funniest thing you’ve heard someone say about your own work?

I’m not sure of the funniest thing I’ve heard but someone let me know how they felt about my work by running a hand through the wet oil paint on one of my paintings in my studio one night. I would have like to have heard the drunken banter surrounding that.

8) What is next on the agenda?

The culmination of the residency program I’ve been doing is a solo exhibition at Australia Square in Sydney March 6 – 18. Beyond that? Rekindling my passion for exotic locations within Australia? In search of inspiration for my next body of work. Also hunting for a new studio space and I think I might spend sometime printmaking, particularly woodblocks.

Come on a surf safari in celluloid and discover epic film journeys – from Puberty Blues to Bra boys.
Join surfers, filmmakers and cultural commentators to explore the making of these classics.

11 February: Gidget (1959) and Blue Hawaii (1961)
Nell Schofield; actor, TV presenter and producer
Jaimie and Aspasia Leonarder; Mu Meson film archive

Gidget is one of the quintessential and original surf movies. It follows the story of Francis
who has a run in with some surfers while swimming one day and becomes drawn to the sport,
]as well as the surfers. Blue Hawaii, an Elvis classic, is the first of three movies that he shot in Hawaii.
It is a fun musical that follows Chad Gates as he returns to the surfing culture of Hawaii after serving in the army.

18 February: Puberty Blues (1971)
Paul Byrnes; Sydney Morning Herald film critic and senior curator for Australian Screen Online
Paul Clarke; director and producer of Bombora
Rebecca Olive; academic and surfing blogger

Puberty Blues is a cult-classic that follows the lives of a group of Aussie teenage girls
as they grow up on the beach and hanging out with the local surfer boys.

25 February: Heaven (1997), Hell (2009) and Bra Boys (2007)
Nell Schofield; actor, TV presenter and producer
Macario De Souza; director of Bra Boys

These surf flicks are experimental and controversial. Hear Nell Schofield talk about
her movie Hell which was created in response to Tracey Moffatt’s art film Heaven,
which compiles footage of male surfers posing, surfing, dressing and undressing on Australian beaches.
]Bra Boys tells the story of the notorious Maroubra surf-gang. The film looks at their success as big
wave surfers as well as other aspects of their sometimes turbulent lives within surfing culture and Sydney society.

Auditions: ANIMAL FARM directed by Netta Yaschin
AUDITIONING AGES 15 – 26

Australian Theatre for Young People is looking for performers aged between 15 and 26 for a new stage adaptation of Animal

Farm. George Orwell’s classic tale of corrupted revolution will be brought to life with startling imagination by director

N…etta Yaschin. The animals of Manor Farm have a vision for a better world. But there is a fragrance to power that can

overwhelm the senses.

This new adaptation brings a tribal energy to one of the greatest stories of the 20th Century. An ensemble of actors aged

between 15 and 26 will turn Studio 1 into a utopian world before revelling in its demise. Using physical theatre, ensemble

improvisation and excerpts straight from the novel this production is a joyous theatrical revolution.

The production is looking for actors from diverse ages and backgrounds. Strong dance and physical theatre skills are an

advantage but not essential.

The production will also make use of actors able to sing and play musical instruments.

Copyright Agency announces the deadline of the second round of
Artlike competition

Friday 13 January 2012 – Artists have until Wednesday 29 February 2012 to enter Artlike, an art
competition run on Facebook by rights management organisation Copyright Agency.

Artlike is an art competition run through Copyright Agency’s Artists’ Resale Royalty Facebook page –
where budding artists can submit their work to CAL for posting on the page, with the winner chosen
by the amount of ‘Likes’ received.

The winning artist will be featured in the March issue of Copyright Agency’s Calendar magazine.

The first round of our Artlike Facebook competition closed on 30 November, with David Bradbury’s
Woman and baby reflected in the mirror, winning convincingly with the most ‘likes’.

Originally from England, David is based in Sydney and has been painting since he was a child. In 1997
he launched a website www.badart.co.uk through which he takes on commissions.

While David paints all sorts subjects, he most enjoys portraits. ‘I’m not inspired to paint landscapes
but people are endlessly fascinating, even if they’re maddeningly difficult to paint (especially noses
and mouths),’ he says.

To enter please download our application form please log on to www.copyright.com.au > Creators
and Publishers > Visual artists > Artlike competition. Please read the terms and conditions before
entering.

Artists are invited to submit their work for review in order to be selected for
fourth volume of “International Contemporary Artists”, a series of international art books.
The book will provide an in-depth look at global art, appealing to professional and
emerging artists, opening out the world of art to a wider audience.

The publication is already in progress and early submissions are recommended.

If you are an artist or gallery, interested in this project, we would be delighted
to review your submission.
As in previews volumes, the book will include paintings, sculptures, installations,
digital art and photography, showing in each page the individuality of each artist
and different styles of expression as well.

Emerging and established artists are welcome to submit their work for selection in
order to be included to the book.

A juried committee will select the artists who will be able to show their work in a
full-color art book. Each selected artist will be presented in the book in a one-page
layout that will include images of his/her work, an essay or statement and his/her contact information.
You can find additional information about the book here: www.incoartists.com

The book is distributed worldwide through major book wholesalers and online shops.

If you want to submit your work for review or if you have any questions about this
publication, please feel free to contact us.

We are taking submissions for 2012 now!

So, What is ‘In Studio’?

It’s a regular section of our blog, in which we will be profiling a different artist each time,
asking them questions about their pratice, their studio and about themselves.
We will also be taking photos of them in their working enironment, be it a studio or out in the field.

Please send the following information to sydneygalleries@gmail.com

1) Your name.
2) Current email.
3) Type of art practice.
4) If you have a show coming up in Sydney and the date (If applicable).
5) Your studio location.
5) 25 words or less of why you want to be profiled.

IN STUDIO with Joel Dickens

29 01 2012

1) Who is Joel Dickens?

I was born in England, studied Fine Art in the Lake District and after a number of years living, working and exhibiting in London I moved to Sydney in 2003. I live in Paddington with my wife Kate and our dog Sterling Fox

2) Explain your current body of work?

The subject matter for this body of work comes mostly from current news stories. I don’t see them as being descriptive of events, they are not narrative in that way. They aim to document the mood of society, the zeitgeist. They aim to document the emotional response to such events. They discuss the plight of the individual, at the centre of their universe, trying to receive and process all this information…trying to remain on track and not be overwhelmed. I am attempting to capture the chaos, the confusion, the struggle that is day to day existence, whether you are the person at the centre of events or an outsider looking in. In a way these works are a diary of that struggle.

3) If you can pick one artist as an inspiration, who would it be and why?

I’m afraid I can’t pick one artist, Munch, Kirchner, Picasso, Bacon…I am inspired by any artist who has the courage to tackle the big questions about life and the human condition. I draw as much inspiration from certain writers and musicians as I do from painters.

4) With your own art/art practice, where would you like to be in 10 years?

I hope that I would be in a position to be able to do something useful with my work, bringing certain causes to peoples attention, maybe working with charities to raise money through art sales. I’d like to be with a gallery in London, with more travel between the two cities. I hope that maybe I’d have a big enough studio to do work on the scale I’d like to. I wouldn’t mind living in the South of France.

5) How are you finding the current art market?

It’s difficult to sell art at any time, especially if you don’t paint particularly commercial paintings. I do feel the uncertain financial situation has meant that people are playing things safe, both in the production of work and the buying of it. But ask me again after the show!

6) Name four things that you cannot do without in your studio?

My radio…pen and paper for taking notes, the odd beer. Pedestal fan.

7) What was the funniest thing you’ve heard someone say about your own work?

Somebody who bought a painting said she moved it from the bedroom to the hall because it kept giving her nightmares. Not funny really.

8) What is next on the agenda?

My show at Arthouse, short break, then start painting for the next show. Some friends and I are arranging a couple of group shows which will be fun. This year I want to concentrate on finding representation in Melbourne.

9) Where can we find more about Joel Dickens?

OPENINGS AND THE ARTS IN SYDNEY (2.5 Week end of year bumper edition) 05/12/2011 – 26/12/2011

4 12 2011

On a sad note, last week Doug Moran passed away, at age of 86. His generosity for the arts will not be forgotten and our thoughts are with his family.

This is a bumper edition, our last major blog post for the year. After this we’ll be taking a summer holiday, returning in Feb 2012. We won’t be completely silent during this time though – we’ll add interesting events and things to our blog when we hear about them.

To the galleries closing their doors for good at the end of 2011, we will miss you and we wish you all the best for future projects, keep us all informed.

This week sees lots of final shows for the year and the SCA postgrad show, details below. Don’t forget to contribute your work to the fundraising shows for artist-run spaces either – without these galleries, the art scene would look a little drab, so get your work to them.

Next year sees new competitions, posts  and a new section coming (more information coming soon!)

Finally, thank you so much for your support, without you we cannot run as smoothly.

Thankyou, and enjoy you holiday if you get one, at least get into the studio.

Merry Christmas and a happy new year! Mark Rowden

Project52 is about intrigue and the relationship between people,
objects, images and stories.

Each week, for 52 weeks, I create a drawing and a related 52-word
story inspired by objects provided by a participant.

Participants are invited to provide me with an object or a photo.
Within a week, I create an artwork and a story, using their object for inspiration.
In return, you receive a sneak preview before I post the work on my site and you
get the credit for providing the inspiration.

When all 52 works are completed, the project will culminate in an exhibition.

A free exhibition of the artists selected for the Redlands Westpac Art Prize 2012 will be
presented at the National Art School from 2 May until 2 June 2012.

PRIZE ANNOUNCEMENT:
The winning artists in both the main prize and emerging prize will be announced on
Wednesday 2 May 2012. With the exception of the winning art works that are acquired by
Redlands School, all works exhibited in the Prize will be available for purchase.

About Redlands
Established in 1884, Redlands is a leading Sydney independent school with a reputation
for innovation in education. Over the past 126 years, Redlands has expanded
significantly from its beginnings as a small school of five students to the vibrant, co-
educational, international environment of today and during that time has led much
innovation in education. An extensive range of programs – academic, sports, creative
and performing arts, outdoor education, service – gives students the opportunity to learn,
to achieve and to develop their unique skills and talents.

As in previous years Lindy will select approximately 18 contemporary Australian and
New Zealand artists to participate in the exhibition. Each of the selected artists
will in turn nominate an “emerging” artist to also participate.

The successful selected artist will receive a $20,000 cheque courtesy of Westpac’s sponsorship.
The successful emerging artist will receive a $10,000 cheque courtesy of Konica Minolta.
Both artworks will in turn become part of the School’s teaching collection.

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS
The ATVP Demo Sale is a fundraiser for the gallery and an opportunity to sell your
artworks in the lead up to the Christmas Season. The show will take up the entirety
of the Ground Floor Gallery as well as our two new spaces – the Starewell Gallery
and Gallery 4.5 upstairs.

As an Artist Run Initiative (ARI), ATVP relies on donations, grants and a whole lot
of good will to fund our mission to support emerging and contemporary art, artists

keep delivering an exciting program into 2012 and beyond.

Artists are invited to submit works with a sale price of no more than $300.
The proceeds from any works sold will be split evenly between the gallery and the artist.

The Demo Sale operates like a garage sale – works can be taken by the buyer immediately
after purchase (in time to be wrapped and put under the tree). We will continue to put
out more artworks as others sell.

team develops a new and exciting program of exhibitions and events for
the coming 12 months. Within this program, a number of exhibition slots
are reserved for proposals from artists and curators wishing to exhibit
in one or more of our gallery spaces. ATVP will consider every proposal seriously,
and for those that are successful, provide complete support in the development
and delivery of the exhibition.

Please find the information pack and proposal form attached.

ATVP is committed to supporting innovative, experimental and engaging emerging and
contemporary artistic and curatorial practices. Since being established in early 2007,
ATVP has presented more than 100 exhibitions, projects and events, providing valuable
exposure and opportunities for artists, curators and audiences alike.

Proposals are open to artists seeking individual exhibition, group shows and curators.
Artists should take particular note of our new space Gallery 4.5 -
an affordable and professional space for a solo show.

OIL PAINTING CLASSES with Celia Gullett

Applications are now open for a one year course in oil painting classes with Celia Gullett. This course is designed to familiarize students with the historical principles and techniques of painting. The central theme of the course is to investigate and understand how artists have tackled the difficulty of creating three dimensions on a flat surface. Artists from numerous periods of western painting have passed down invaluable methods to achieve a range of effects in oils. By focusing on the use of underpainting systems, and painting in layers, it is envisaged that students will expand their repertoire and be able to bring greater purpose and skill to their practice.
The course is suitable for established practitioners who wish to extend their technical knowledge, as well as students with no prior experience. Beginners will gain a strong foundation in oil painting.

Students will learn a wide range of traditional systems that will expand their
understanding of the craft of painting, and bring about a more informed attitude towards the subtle aspects of working with oil paint. As well as gaining an understanding of these traditional systems, students are introduced to the properties and characteristics of pigments, mediums and supports, encouraging students to familiarize themselves with archival practices. Subjects include the figure, still life, portraiture and landscape, seen technically through particular painters in western history. Whilst it is often the case during the course that the subject is set, the range of techniques and effects covered can be adapted to figurative or non-figurative painting. The pursuit of an individual language is encouraged and fostered in and out of class, and students are expected to develop
their own responses to the information presented during the year.

The year is divided into 4 terms, which roughly follow the school year. New students are required to attend on a Friday from 9.30 – 2pm with a short lunch break. Class size is limited to 12. Students need to make a commitment to attend the full programme, as the course has been designed in stages to allow maximum attention to each area of study.
If students wish to continue studying after the first year, as has been the case to date, there is a mixture of self – generated and set projects. Various artists from the Impressionists, the 20th century, and our current time are covered. The use of contemporary materials is also discussed and investigated in the second year of study.

The studio for the classes is situated in Annandale. Applicants should contact Celia Gullett to enquire about costs and equipment. There is a recommended materials
list, which will provide students with a preferred palette, mediums and brushes. etc. Classes for new students are on Fridays and continuing students on Thursdays.

As an Artist Run Initiative (ARI), ATVP relies on donations, grants and a whole lot
of good will to fund our mission to support emerging and contemporary art, artists
and curators. As such, this show is an important fundraiser to ensure that we can
keep delivering an exciting program into 2012 and beyond.
