Copyright Agency announces the deadline of the second round of
Artlike competition

Friday 13 January 2012 – Artists have until Wednesday 29 February 2012 to enter Artlike, an art
competition run on Facebook by rights management organisation Copyright Agency.

Artlike is an art competition run through Copyright Agency’s Artists’ Resale Royalty Facebook page –
where budding artists can submit their work to CAL for posting on the page, with the winner chosen
by the amount of ‘Likes’ received.

The winning artist will be featured in the March issue of Copyright Agency’s Calendar magazine.

The first round of our Artlike Facebook competition closed on 30 November, with David Bradbury’s
Woman and baby reflected in the mirror, winning convincingly with the most ‘likes’.

Originally from England, David is based in Sydney and has been painting since he was a child. In 1997
he launched a website www.badart.co.uk through which he takes on commissions.

While David paints all sorts subjects, he most enjoys portraits. ‘I’m not inspired to paint landscapes
but people are endlessly fascinating, even if they’re maddeningly difficult to paint (especially noses
and mouths),’ he says.

To enter please download our application form please log on to www.copyright.com.au > Creators
and Publishers > Visual artists > Artlike competition. Please read the terms and conditions before
entering.

Artists are invited to submit their work for review in order to be selected for
fourth volume of “International Contemporary Artists”, a series of international art books.
The book will provide an in-depth look at global art, appealing to professional and
emerging artists, opening out the world of art to a wider audience.

The publication is already in progress and early submissions are recommended.

If you are an artist or gallery, interested in this project, we would be delighted
to review your submission.
As in previews volumes, the book will include paintings, sculptures, installations,
digital art and photography, showing in each page the individuality of each artist
and different styles of expression as well.

Emerging and established artists are welcome to submit their work for selection in
order to be included to the book.

A juried committee will select the artists who will be able to show their work in a
full-color art book. Each selected artist will be presented in the book in a one-page
layout that will include images of his/her work, an essay or statement and his/her contact information.
You can find additional information about the book here: www.incoartists.com

The book is distributed worldwide through major book wholesalers and online shops.

If you want to submit your work for review or if you have any questions about this

IN STUDIO with Joel Dickens

29 01 2012

1) Who is Joel Dickens?

I was born in England, studied Fine Art in the Lake District and after a number of years living, working and exhibiting in London I moved to Sydney in 2003. I live in Paddington with my wife Kate and our dog Sterling Fox

2) Explain your current body of work?

The subject matter for this body of work comes mostly from current news stories. I don’t see them as being descriptive of events, they are not narrative in that way. They aim to document the mood of society, the zeitgeist. They aim to document the emotional response to such events. They discuss the plight of the individual, at the centre of their universe, trying to receive and process all this information…trying to remain on track and not be overwhelmed. I am attempting to capture the chaos, the confusion, the struggle that is day to day existence, whether you are the person at the centre of events or an outsider looking in. In a way these works are a diary of that struggle.

3) If you can pick one artist as an inspiration, who would it be and why?

I’m afraid I can’t pick one artist, Munch, Kirchner, Picasso, Bacon…I am inspired by any artist who has the courage to tackle the big questions about life and the human condition. I draw as much inspiration from certain writers and musicians as I do from painters.

4) With your own art/art practice, where would you like to be in 10 years?

I hope that I would be in a position to be able to do something useful with my work, bringing certain causes to peoples attention, maybe working with charities to raise money through art sales. I’d like to be with a gallery in London, with more travel between the two cities. I hope that maybe I’d have a big enough studio to do work on the scale I’d like to. I wouldn’t mind living in the South of France.

5) How are you finding the current art market?

It’s difficult to sell art at any time, especially if you don’t paint particularly commercial paintings. I do feel the uncertain financial situation has meant that people are playing things safe, both in the production of work and the buying of it. But ask me again after the show!

6) Name four things, that you cannot do without in your studio?

My radio…pen and paper for taking notes, the odd beer. Pedestal fan.

7) What was the funnest thing you’ve heard someone say about your own work?

Somebody who bought a painting said she moved it from the bedroom to the hall because it kept giving her nightmares. Not funny really.

8) What is next on the agenda?

My show at Arthouse, short break, then start painting for the next show. Some friends and I are arranging a couple of group shows which will be fun. This year I want to concentrate on finding representation in Melbourne.

9) Where can we find more about Joel Dickens?

OPENINGS AND THE ARTS IN SYDNEY (2.5 Week end of year bumper edition) 05/12/2011 – 26/12/2011

4 12 2011

On a sad note, last week Doug Moran passed away, at age of 86. His generosity for the arts will not be forgotten and our thoughts are with his family.

This is a bumper edition, our last major blog post for the year. After this we’ll be taking a summer holiday, returning in Feb 2012. We won’t be completely silent during this time though – we’ll add interesting events and things to our blog when we hear about them.

To the galleries closing their doors for good at the end of 2011, we will miss you and we wish you all the best for future projects, keep us all informed.

This week sees lots of final shows for the year and the SCA postgrad show, details below. Don’t forget to contribute your work to the fundraising shows for artist-run spaces either – without these galleries, the art scene would look a little drab, so get your work to them.

Next year sees new competitions, posts  and a new section coming (more information coming soon!)

Finally, thank you so much for your support, without you we cannot run as smoothly.

Thankyou, and enjoy you holiday if you get one, at least get into the studio.

Merry Christmas and a happy new year! Mark Rowden

Project52 is about intrigue and the relationship between people,
objects, images and stories.

Each week, for 52 weeks, I create a drawing and a related 52-word
story inspired by objects provided by a participant.

Participants are invited to provide me with an object or a photo.
Within a week, I create an artwork and a story, using their object for inspiration.
In return, you receive a sneak preview before I post the work on my site and you
get the credit for providing the inspiration.

When all 52 works are completed, the project will culminate in an exhibition.
The easiest way to see some of the outputs is to visit my blog

A free exhibition of the artists selected for the Redlands Westpac Art Prize 2012 will be
presented at the National Art School from 2 May until 2 June 2012.

PRIZE ANNOUNCEMENT:
The winning artists in both the main prize and emerging prize will be announced on
Wednesday 2 May 2012. With the exception of the winning art works that are acquired by
Redlands School, all works exhibited in the Prize will be available for purchase.

About Redlands
Established in 1884, Redlands is a leading Sydney independent school with a reputation
for innovation in education. Over the past 126 years, Redlands has expanded
significantly from its beginnings as a small school of five students to the vibrant, co-
educational, international environment of today and during that time has led much
innovation in education. An extensive range of programs – academic, sports, creative
and performing arts, outdoor education, service – gives students the opportunity to learn,
to achieve and to develop their unique skills and talents.

As in previous years Lindy will select approximately 18 contemporary Australian and
New Zealand artists to participate in the exhibition. Each of the selected artists
will in turn nominate an “emerging” artist to also participate.

The successful selected artist will receive a $20,000 cheque courtesy of Westpac’s sponsorship.
The successful emerging artist will receive a $10,000 cheque courtesy of Konica Minolta.
Both artworks will in turn become part of the School’s teaching collection.

OIL PAINTING CLASSES with Celia Gullett

Applications are now open for a one year course in oil painting classes with Celia Gullett. This course is designed to familiarize students with the historical principles and techniques of painting. The central theme of the course is to investigate and understand how artists have tackled the difficulty of creating three dimensions on a flat surface. Artists from numerous periods of western painting have passed down invaluable methods to achieve a range of effects in oils. By focusing on the use of underpainting systems, and painting in layers, it is envisaged that students will expand their repertoire and be able to bring greater purpose and skill to their practice.
The course is suitable for established practitioners who wish to extend their technical knowledge, as well as students with no prior experience. Beginners will gain a strong foundation in oil painting.

Students will learn a wide range of traditional systems that will expand their
understanding of the craft of painting, and bring about a more informed attitude towards the subtle aspects of working with oil paint. As well as gaining an understanding of these traditional systems, students are introduced to the properties and characteristics of pigments, mediums and supports, encouraging students to familiarize themselves with archival practices. Subjects include the figure, still life, portraiture and landscape, seen technically through particular painters in western history. Whilst it is often the case during the course that the subject is set, the range of techniques and effects covered can be adapted to figurative or non-figurative painting. The pursuit of an individual language is encouraged and fostered in and out of class, and students are expected to develop
their own responses to the information presented during the year.

The year is divided into 4 terms, which roughly follow the school year. New students are required to attend on a Friday from 9.30 – 2pm with a short lunch break. Class size is limited to 12. Students need to make a commitment to attend the full programme, as the course has been designed in stages to allow maximum attention to each area of study.
If students wish to continue studying after the first year, as has been the case to date, there is a mixture of self – generated and set projects. Various artists from the Impressionists, the 20th century, and our current time are covered. The use of contemporary materials is also discussed and investigated in the second year of study.

The studio for the classes is situated in Annandale. Applicants should contact Celia Gullett to enquire about costs and equipment. There is a recommended materials
list, which will provide students with a preferred palette, mediums and brushes. etc. Classes for new students are on Fridays and continuing students on Thursdays.
COURSE OUTLINE

Term 1 :  UNDERSTANDING MATERIALS AND TONE.
• understanding tone and learning traditional methods used in
underpainting systems
• overpainting in opaques and glazes.
• Properties of pigments

• Brushwork

Term 2 : COLOUR AND GROUNDS

Term 3 : THE HUMAN FORM

• Painting the figure / portraiture

Term 4 : SELF GENERATED PROJECT
This term will be spent producing a body of work based on the student’s choice of subject. This is an opportunity for all students to put into practice a more individual approach to painting using the skills attained throughout the year, applying the new repertoire to a more personal subject.

ABOUT CELIA GULLETT
Before founding the painting school at Annandale in 2005, Celia Gullett studied at East Sydney Technical college ( now NAS ), and completed a degree in Fine Arts at City Art Institute, ( now COFA ) in 1982. Returning to teach at both institutions, she has also run many specialized short courses and workshops in Sydney and rural NSW. After completing her studies at City Art Institute and East Sydney Tech, she studied with Charlie Sheard for three years, and assisted him for a year at his studio school in
2000. Celia Gullett has exhibited with the Tim Olsen Gallery since 2002.

A.R.P has new artists in residence creating works for the November exhibition.
Go to the ‘Current Artists’ tab to read more.
Follow A.R.P on facebook and twitter. Links under “Contact”

A.R.P is an artists residency program established to support artists with a
diversity of contemporary art form practices. A.R.P offers Sydney artists
support for their practice by providing affordable, centrally located studio spaces.
Artists are able to create work in the areas where they live and work. A.R.P offers a
professional support network including promotion and exhibition of Sydney contemporary art.

A.R.P would like to find a permanent home for the program and currently functions as a
roving program finding buildings and spaces for artists to make their work. The program
addresses the shortage of affordable space for artists in Sydney, retaining and nurturing
local talent, and creating a better city for contemporary art to be created in and enjoyed.

A.R.P was housed last year in a vacant industrial building on Cockatoo Island,
Sydney Harbour and received great feeedback. A.R.P for 2011 has found a home
within the Rocks precinct as part of The Rocks Pop Up Project, where arts organisations

Strange Enlightenments: Flann O’ Brien and Modernism
Friday, November 11 · 9:00am – 12:00pm

Strange Enlightenments:
Flann O’ Brien and Modernism

Conference
11 November 2011
The University of New South Wales
Sydney, Australia

Flann O’Brien’s work resists easy categorisation. He has often been held as a
‘post-modern’ novelist, whose ludic and parodic fictions played creative havoc
with traditional notions of authority and authorship. However in recent years
the category of post-modernism has been in decline, supplanted by the rise of
the ‘New Modernism’. This has unleashed a radical rethinking of how we define
and ‘periodise’ the modern. Organised jointly by the John Hume Institute for
Global Irish Studies and the Centre for Modernism Studies Australia at UNSW,
this conference uses the occasion of Flann O’Brien’s centenary to reanalyse
his major works in response to these developments.

Call for papers
Papers are invited on the broad theme of Flann O’Brien and ‘Modernism’.
Topics may include (but are not limited to):

- Flann O’Brien’s legacy at 100
- O’Brien’s relationship with modernist writers
- Irish cultural politics
- Literary form, genre, or style
- Comedy, humour, satire and parody
- O’Brien and science
- The Irish language
- Translation and adaptation
- Myles na Gopaleen and journalism
- O’Brien and Irish studies
- O’Brien and modern philosophy
- O’Brien and modern media

Abstracts should be submitted by email. Abstract submissions should
include the paper title, and be no more than 250
words. Please include a brief biography and contact details of the presenting author.

The deadline for submissions is 16 September 2011 at 5pm.
* Please note that authors of successful submissions will
have 20 minutes to present their paper

artists and collectives

Outpost Project, an inaugural street art festival that will be the largest in the southern hemisphere,
has today announced its headline works by artists and collectives from around the world.

More than 150 artists and collectives will transform Cockatoo Island between 4 November and
11 December, with static and live street art creations including aerosol art, stencilling, paste-ups,
stickers, cup-rocking, sculpture and installations.

Curated by the Sydney Harbour Federation Trust’s programming team and aMBUSH Gallery, the
artist line up includes work by street artist Banksy as part of the Oi You! Collection, being seen in
Australia for the first time. International street artists Anthony Lister, Ethos, Kid Zoom, DMOTE
and ROA will be in Sydney to create new work on Cockatoo Island for Outpost.

“Outpost Project brings together the most celebrated local and international street artists for a
vibrant festival that will transform Cockatoo Island,” said Geoff Bailey, Executive Director of the
Sydney Harbour Federation Trust.

“Visitors can expect a packed program of exhibitions spanning a wide range of street art styles
along with live art performances, installations and large-scale murals created on the island,” said
Mr Bailey.

New York-based, Perth-born artist Kid Zoom will return home to create one of the highlight works
of the festival. The large-scale new work will be unveiled on the opening night and touch on
themes of homecoming and the artist’s suburban upbringing in Australia.

Brazilian artist Ethos and Belgian artist ROA will create major new works onto walls on the
eastern edge of Cockatoo Island. ROA, known for his giant murals of animals, is expected to
draw inspiration from Sydney’s local wildlife.

Four giant inflatable sculptures by New York-based, Brisbane-born artist Anthony Lister will be
placed around the island and hung from the eaves of buildings. Lister will paint directly onto the
large-scale inflatables onsite.

Concrete sculptures of household items such as armchairs and washing machines created by
Sydney artist Will Coles will pop up across the island, including a giant concrete fish-shaped
soy sauce container that will be hoisted from a crane and hung against the backdrop of Sydney
Harbour.

Melbourne-based street art collective Everfresh Studio will create a large-scale collaborative
mural measuring 24 by 3.6 metres during the first week of the festival. Everfresh Studio members
including Phibs, Meggs, Makatron, RONE, REKA and PRIZM will paint and attach paste-ups
and stickers onto an oversized ‘No Trespassing’ sign attached to a cliff wall.

During the festival’s first weekend, Sydney-based artist Sprinkles and Gold Coast artist SHIDA
will paint two large-scale billboards live on Cockatoo Island. The works will form part of Project
Ugly, a series of 22 billboards curated by Sydney artist EARS (Daniel O’Toole), whose work is
also featured.

1 Sydney-based artist Ben Frost has curated Pastemodernism 3, a one-room exhibition featuring
the work of more than 100 local and international street artists that will be the largest paste-up
group show ever seen in Australia.

More than 2000 original T-shirts inspired by street culture will be hung as part of an exhibition
curated by Eddie Zammit, founder of the world’s only T-shirt magazine. Nex-T will be the most
comprehensive exhibition ever presented of T-shirts inspired by street culture.

The May Lane Street Art Project, an exhibition of large-scale street art created at May Lane in
Sydney’s St Peters, will be presented in an industrial space on Cockatoo Island. The exhibition is
presented by Bathurst Regional Gallery as part of a national tour and documents a range of street
art styles including aerosol art, paste-ups and stencilling.

The work of stencil artists will also be displayed as part of an exhibition of the finalists and
winning entrants to the 2011 Australian Stencil Art Prize.

The evolution of street art – a global art movement established in New York in the 1970s – will be
portrayed in the Foundations exhibition. Featuring the work of at least two generations of street
artists, Foundations offers insights into the development of the genre.

The grand final of Skateboarding Australia’s 2011 Pro/Am tour will be hosted on Outpost Project’s
closing weekend (10 and 11 December) and will see the country’s most talented skaters compete
amongst the street art works.

A vibrant program of live music, workshops and artist performances will be announced next
month.
