————————————————————————————————————–

This week sees the start of August, which means the year is traveling at high speeds!

Here is a little bit of information to whet the palate about August..

August is the eighth month of the year in the Julian and Gregorian Calendars and one of seven months with a length of 31 days.
In the Southern Hemisphere, August is the seasonal equivalent of February in the Northern Hemisphere.
In common years no other month starts on the same day of the week as August, though in leap years February starts on the same day.
August ends on the same day of the week as November every year.

Have a great week and enjoy the art scene in Sydney.

If you want any shows or information listed on the blog then please send us an email with all the details including any images you may have.

Closing Night Gala – Safety Not Guaranteed

“WANTED: Someone to go back in time with me. This is not a joke. You’ll get paid after we get back.
Must bring your own weapons. Safety not guaranteed. I have only done this once before.”
This unusual classified ad inspires three cynical Seattle magazine employees to look for the story behind it.
They set out for the scenic seaside community of Ocean View and embark on a comical adventure. Darius
(Aubrey Plaza, of hit television comedy Parks and Recreation) is a disillusioned college graduate who interns at the magazine.
She’s joined by a fellow intern, the very serious Arnau (Karan Soni), and their boozy boss, Jeff (Jake Johnson),
and the three go about some clumsy investigative journalism. Jeff is apparently only interested in the story
so he can hook up with an old flame who lives in Ocean View, so Darius and Arnau are left largely to their own devices.
They find an eccentric named Kenneth (Mark Duplass, mumblecore pioneer and co-director of SFF film Jeff, Who Lives at Home),
a supermarket clerk who believes he’s solved the riddle of time travel and intends to depart again soon.
Safety Not Guaranteed is a surprising and very funny sci-fi comedy with heart.

Come celebrate the end of the 59th Sydney Film Festival in style as the Closing Night Gala sends
off another great season. a chance to experience the red-carpet glamour of one of Australia’s premiere film events in one of its most beautiful venues.

Visual Art
Factory 49 Paris

Factory 49 wants to open a Showroom in Paris to be run in a similar fashion to our
Sydney Showroom. We have found a space to buy and need the funds to do that.
Factory 49 is a registered “not-for-profit” organisation which has been running very
successfully for 6 years in Sydney. It is run by a committee of mature artists.
Paris is chosen as a venue because Factory 49 has already built up a network due to
the Director visiting 2 months each year for the past 6 years. Paris is also a perfect
city for a stepping stone to other European countries. This will enable Australian
artists to have a much larger profile and help them professionally.

FACTORY 49 AIMS AND OBJECTIVES:

1. establish and promote artistic activities related to the guiding principles of the
international art movement known as either non-objective art, geometric art, abstract art or non realistic art.
2. provide a Showroom and outdoor Walls for the mounting of works and installations that
display historical and contemporary artworks within the traditions of abstraction.
3. provide a platform for visiting artists of national and international stature with
associated free residencies and lectures, thus becoming part of a large network and exchange.
4. bring emerging artists into a close relationship with other mature or visiting artists,
writers and curators from around NSW, interstate and overseas, &  promote them locally & internationally.
6. co-ordinate an educational program for Primary children as well as a local community program
to introduce contemporary art. Outreach to University students seeking to affiliate or
broaden their understanding of such regional activities.
7. gain a wider critical acceptance of abstract art while further developing artists profiles.
8. establish an archive that documents images, videos, catalogues, texts, articles and books.
9. publish a Year Book every 12 months as well as all of the normal material for shows.
10.seek grants from NSW Ministry of the Arts, Marrickville Council and private sponsors.

The Rocks Pop-Up 2012 Call for creative partners and organisations
The Rocks Pop-Up: an ever-changing mix of creative minds in unconventional and intimate spaces.
Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority is inviting NSW based arts and creative organisations to submit proposals for The Rocks Pop-Up 2012.
The Rocks Pop-Up activates temporarily vacant buildings by providing creative
workers with access to affordable space, while a long term tenant is secured.
Premises can be used by participants to create work, showcase original pieces, and host unique events, such as small-scale performances and screenings.
Creative partners and organisations with a focus on exhibition and collaboration are invited to make a proposal to participate.
Some of the creative minds of The Rocks Pop-Up include SafARI, places + spaces Cockatoo Calling Rocks, galleryeight, Griffin Theatre Company, Sydney College of Arts, &Company, Gaffa, Word Travels and many more.
Successful applicants enter into licence agreements to manage the spaces and coordinate use by artists and creative workers under their umbrella.

HELP NEEDED!!
Help in minding the gallery on an ongoing basis on either Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays between 1-6pm.
The gallery office space is now equipped with comfortable seating and as always a nice aircon/heater to keep you toasty. There is also a Dodo internet thingy to keep net junkies satisfied. Ideal for those studying and need a remote industrial getaway.
If you know anyone who could help out, that’d be real sweet. Doesn’t have to be a consistent thing, just dependable.

Contact the gallery if you think you can help.

Call out for artists to do art in squatted spaces

Fire Gallery will start it’s string of art exhibitions in squatted art spaces. The first of many will be in Newtown. Our crew is looking for all sorts of artists to work with odd spaces doing graffiti, stencils, murals, performances or art installations…or anything creative you may want to do.

The reason behind this project is to make art spaces available to artists. Such spaces would otherwise remain unused and abandoned. Anyone participating in this project needs to understand the legal implications attached to trespassing if caught by police. However, most times police will only ask you to move on and only the art organisers will be left to deal with the consequences. Living in fear is for losers so get onboard and do some cool art projects with Little Fish. Everyone is welcome to participate and all ideas and proposals will be considered.

This project will also be highlighting exploitation against artists by the art world where artists need to hire a space and also pay commissions on sales of artworks.

THINGS OF INTEREST
———————-

The Museum of Contemporary Art Australia opened its doors in March to great public acclaim as a bold new museum for contemporary art and creative learning. With new galleries, enhanced facilities for the public and dedicated facilities for our education programs, the possibilities that the new MCA offers are almost endless. The expanded facilities provide us with the opportunity to meet the increasing interest in contemporary art and the ever growing demand for our programs. With the building complete, it’s now time to focus back on the art and delivering our ground breaking programs.

Occupying 40% of the new wing, the National Centre for Creative Learning is a dynamic and innovative space for learning. The centre is equipped with state-of-the art technology and holds digital and multimedia studios, two practical creative studios, a lecture theatre, seminar room and library. It also houses the Bella Room, a multi-sensory learning and exhibition space for the MCA’s Bella program.

The Bella Program offers workshops to young people who have little or no access to museums and cultural institutions. These children may be experiencing physical, intellectual, emotional or behavioural disabilities, or are disadvantaged due to their financial, social or geographic situation.

The MCA is dedicated to creating accessibility to contemporary art for all and the Bella Program is a vital part of this mission. The Bella workshops were initiated by patrons Cynthia Jackson AM and the late Dr Edward Jackson AM in 1993 and the new facilities give the MCA the opportunity to run this program year round. However, more workshops mean we need to raise more money to fund the program.

Our Annual Appeal this year is therefore focused on the Bella Program – to provide free workshops throughout the year to these very special young people.

Donating to the MCA Annual Appeal is easy and all donations are tax deductible, just click on the link https://app.etapestry.com/bbphosted/nl_mca/OnlineDonation.html. If you have any questions about supporting the MCA please call Lisa Hamilton, Philanthropy Manager on 02 9245 2414 or email development@mca.com.au. I hope you can support this incredible program. With best wishes,

Elizabeth Ann Macgregor  OBE Director

OF LIGHT – Call for Artists! CALL FOR EXHIBITION PROPOSALS: (invite your artistic friends & lovers to the event!)

YOLK Collective invites emerging artists of a range of mediums to submit proposals for our group exhibition ‘OF LIGHT’ before June 6th 2012.

The General Public, particularly tertiary students and graduates, are encouraged to apply. Collaborative projects are also welcomed. Unfettered by medium, we are open to artists working within a variety of disciplines, traditional to experimental.

Exhibition details: ‘OF LIGHT’ will be the debut exhibition curated and mediated by the newly formed YOLK Collective. It is an exhibition centered on manipulations of light, luminosity and electricity. This is a broad theme encompassing works that conceptualise notions of light, and explore visual elements of contrast and chiaroscuro, while also encompassing works using lights or mediums of a luminescent nature.

To accompany the exhibition YOLK Collective will provide an extensive catalogue/magazine at the expense of the Collective to highlight the artists exhibited and other written components we have created. This will be freely distributed around Sydney.

The exhibition will be held at ‘The Barn’ in Mosman at the cost of the Collective over the duration of three days (13-15 July 2012). We are limited to the space and hanging devices at the location. There will be an opening event that will also be the launch of the Collective.

Who are YOLK Collective?

YOLK Collective is a not-for-profit collective comprised of three Art Theory students from COFA.
YOLK Collective’s objective is to create opportunities and editorial for emerging artists.
We also write artist profiles, exhibition reviews, quirky articles, essays, and some of our
projects include small focus exhibitions and events.

– Our written content is also published on our blog: http://yolkcollective.blogspot.com.au/ & supplementary materials on our twitter, facebook, pinterest and instagram. To enquire about proposals/curatorial theme, please contact YOLK Collective at yolkcollective@gmail.com

Please email proposal submissions to yolkcollective@gmail.com

INCLUDE: 2 x high-resolution images of the works with full details (name, year, materials, dimensions), your CV, contact details and a short summary of why you think your works fit the exhibition’s theme ‘OF LIGHT.’ Entries close 06/06/2012 (The earlier you enter the more publicity and editorial we may be able to provide for you).

IN GALLERY with GAFFA

1) How did you come up with the gallery name?
Was it your first choice?

Deciding on a name was a really torturous process which took a fair while.
Eventually we settled on Gaffa, which is simply after the industrial cloth
tape / http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaffer_tape as it has always been one
of my favourite products.

2) What kind of artists do you want showing in your gallery? Is the
there a general skill level or style that you look for?

Gaffa is dedicated to championing all disciplines and art mediums across
the art & design spectrum. Our only requisite is that the concept for the
show is innovative and compelling and that the artist is committed to
executing their proposed exhibition in a professional manner.
Naturally, we’re most strongly drawn to those who are interested in
nurturing an ongoing relationship with us, and who we can work with
collaboratively on future projects.

3) What is the best way to approach your gallery?

Either through email (info@gaffa.com.au) or by coming along to one of our
fortnightly precinct launches and saying hello.

4) What is your galleries philosophy?

Gaffa is artist-run in attitude and execution. It is first and foremost,
about access. For artists and designers this is access to space, access to
networks, equipment, support and an infra-structure. For our patrons, its
access to exciting local creativity and a welcoming environment they
wouldn’t otherwise get to be a part of.

5) If you can, what advise can you give to an artist looking for
representation, what would it be?

We don’t represent artists as such, as we aren’t a commercial gallery.
However we have built a ‘stable’ of artists whom we source from whenever
we undertake an off-site project, commission or Gaffa curated exhibition.
Our reason for selecting these artists is that their work is strong in
both vision and execution, they have worked with us a number of times and
they have demonstrated their dedication to their practice. Having many
friends in the industry, and knowing their experiences as artists, I would
advise not giving up (it can take years and years before finding the right
match with a gallery) and don’t compromise and change the way you work
according to apparent trends. That never works, and someone is more likely
to fall in love through your conviction.

6) It is a hard market out there, how are you finding it?

It is tough indeed. However, our structure as an organisation is not
reliant on sales of artworks so thankfully we aren’t completely at the
mercy of the financial climate.

7) Is it easy to sell art?

Yes and no. Yes, because when someone falls in love with a piece, its love
and money becomes no object. But no, because people with that passion do
seem scarce at the moment.

8) Have you any advise when choosing a gallery to show in?

It should be one where you like their exhibition program and you like to
attend their openings. It should also be one where you can see picture
your work fitting comfortably, as their audience will be more receptive to it.

9) There are plenty of ARI (Artist run initiatives) out there, What are
you thoughts on these spaces.

These spaces are crucial to the well being of the art industry as a whole.
This is where artists find their feet and develop their networks. They are
integral.

10) Melbourne vs Sydney how do you see the arts and the major
differences?

I’m not too sure about this one. If anything I might say that Melbourne
artists seem to be more prolific, but this may be to do with a slightly
lower cost of living there. Their networks also seem stronger.

11) Social media is everywhere, do you use it and does it help the gallery?

Absolutely we use it. It helps us reach a far wider audience, much faster
and on a regular basis.

12) What art do you have on your wall at home and your office?

My personal art collection at home is growing more and more all the time,
and my favourites are the pieces that have been gifted to me by artists
who have come through Gaffa. My latest pride and joy is a diptych
photographic work by Tanya Baker http://www.tanyabaker.com.au/series7.htm
‘Today (Sam) / Tomorrow (Sam’

13) Where can we find out more about your gallery?

www.gaffa.com.au

14) What shows are coming up over the next couple of months?

For the month of May we are program partners with HEAD ON PHOTO FESTIVAL
2012 and we’ll be featuring some really exciting emerging photographers.
CYBELE MALINOWSKI, SIMON HEWSON, CLARE WEEKS, DARA KRETSCHMER, CHRISTIAN
PEARSON and more.

OPENINGS AND THE ARTS IN SYDNEY (2.5 Week end of year bumper edition) 05/12/2011 – 26/12/2011

On a sad note, last week Doug Moran passed away, at age of 86. His generosity for the arts will not be forgotten and our thoughts are with his family.

This is a bumper edition, our last major blog post for the year. After this we’ll be taking a summer holiday, returning in Feb 2012. We won’t be completely silent during this time though – we’ll add interesting events and things to our blog when we hear about them.

To the galleries closing their doors for good at the end of 2011, we will miss you and we wish you all the best for future projects, keep us all informed.

This week sees lots of final shows for the year and the SCA postgrad show, details below. Don’t forget to contribute your work to the fundraising shows for artist-run spaces either – without these galleries, the art scene would look a little drab, so get your work to them.

Next year sees new competitions, posts  and a new section coming (more information coming soon!)

Finally, thank you so much for your support, without you we cannot run as smoothly.

Thankyou, and enjoy you holiday if you get one, at least get into the studio.

Merry Christmas and a happy new year! Mark Rowden

THINGS OF INTEREST

Project52 is about intrigue and the relationship between people,
objects, images and stories.

Each week, for 52 weeks, I create a drawing and a related 52-word
story inspired by objects provided by a participant.

Participants are invited to provide me with an object or a photo.
Within a week, I create an artwork and a story, using their object for inspiration.
In return, you receive a sneak preview before I post the work on my site and you
get the credit for providing the inspiration.

When all 52 works are completed, the project will culminate in an exhibition.
The easiest way to see some of the outputs is to visit my blog

A free exhibition of the artists selected for the Redlands Westpac Art Prize 2012 will be
presented at the National Art School from 2 May until 2 June 2012.

PRIZE ANNOUNCEMENT:
The winning artists in both the main prize and emerging prize will be announced on
Wednesday 2 May 2012. With the exception of the winning art works that are acquired by
Redlands School, all works exhibited in the Prize will be available for purchase.

About Redlands
Established in 1884, Redlands is a leading Sydney independent school with a reputation
for innovation in education. Over the past 126 years, Redlands has expanded
significantly from its beginnings as a small school of five students to the vibrant, co-
educational, international environment of today and during that time has led much
innovation in education. An extensive range of programs – academic, sports, creative
and performing arts, outdoor education, service – gives students the opportunity to learn,
to achieve and to develop their unique skills and talents.

As in previous years Lindy will select approximately 18 contemporary Australian and
New Zealand artists to participate in the exhibition. Each of the selected artists
will in turn nominate an “emerging” artist to also participate.

The successful selected artist will receive a $20,000 cheque courtesy of Westpac’s sponsorship.
The successful emerging artist will receive a $10,000 cheque courtesy of Konica Minolta.
Both artworks will in turn become part of the School’s teaching collection.

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS
The ATVP Demo Sale is a fundraiser for the gallery and an opportunity to sell your
artworks in the lead up to the Christmas Season. The show will take up the entirety
of the Ground Floor Gallery as well as our two new spaces – the Starewell Gallery

OIL PAINTING CLASSES with Celia Gullett

Applications are now open for a one year course in oil painting classes with Celia Gullett. This course is designed to familiarize students with the historical principles and techniques of painting. The central theme of the course is to investigate and understand how artists have tackled the difficulty of creating three dimensions on a flat surface. Artists from numerous periods of western painting have passed down invaluable methods to achieve a range of effects in oils. By focusing on the use of underpainting systems, and painting in layers, it is envisaged that students will expand their repertoire and be able to bring greater purpose and skill to their practice.
The course is suitable for established practitioners who wish to extend their technical knowledge, as well as students with no prior experience. Beginners will gain a strong foundation in oil painting.

Students will learn a wide range of traditional systems that will expand their
understanding of the craft of painting, and bring about a more informed attitude towards the subtle aspects of working with oil paint. As well as gaining an understanding of these traditional systems, students are introduced to the properties and characteristics of pigments, mediums and supports, encouraging students to familiarize themselves with archival practices. Subjects include the figure, still life, portraiture and landscape, seen technically through particular painters in western history. Whilst it is often the case during the course that the subject is set, the range of techniques and effects covered can be adapted to figurative or non-figurative painting. The pursuit of an individual language is encouraged and fostered in and out of class, and students are expected to develop
their own responses to the information presented during the year.

The year is divided into 4 terms, which roughly follow the school year. New students are required to attend on a Friday from 9.30 – 2pm with a short lunch break. Class size is limited to 12. Students need to make a commitment to attend the full programme, as the course has been designed in stages to allow maximum attention to each area of study.
If students wish to continue studying after the first year, as has been the case to date, there is a mixture of self – generated and set projects. Various artists from the Impressionists, the 20th century, and our current time are covered. The use of contemporary materials is also discussed and investigated in the second year of study.

The studio for the classes is situated in Annandale. Applicants should contact Celia Gullett to enquire about costs and equipment. There is a recommended materials
list, which will provide students with a preferred palette, mediums and brushes. etc. Classes for new students are on Fridays and continuing students on Thursdays.

ABOUT CELIA GULLETT
Before founding the painting school at Annandale in 2005, Celia Gullett studied at East Sydney Technical college ( now NAS ), and completed a degree in Fine Arts at City Art Institute, ( now COFA ) in 1982. Returning to teach at both institutions, she has also run many specialized short courses and workshops in Sydney and rural NSW. After completing her studies at City Art Institute and East Sydney Tech, she studied with Charlie Sheard for three years, and assisted him for a year at his studio school in
