INSTUDIO with Laura Jones

Laura Jones 2013 instudio

1) Who is Laura Jones?

30 year old painter and printmaker from Sydney.

IMG_5960

2) Explain your current body of work?

Currently I am working on a series of still life paintings. I bring flowers from my work at a flower shop to the studio and paint them over the course of 2 or 3 days. The paintings encapsulate their decay because I respond to them as I see them over that period of time. The flowers are always changing and so interesting shifts occur over the course of the painting, creating slightly abstracted forms that overall have the feeling of being a “flower.” I love the symbolism they hold and the metaphorical power that they have.

IMG_5953

3) If you can pick one artist as an inspiration, who would it be and why?

Can I pick three?
Lara Merrett for her fluidity. I share a studio with her and her paintings are quite autobiographical in a way. I think she is a wonderful and clever colourist. Her work is reflective of her life as a vibrant woman and artist. Also, I’m looking a lot at Margaret Olley and Margaret Preston at the moment.

I love the strong graphic elements of Preston’s work. Her printmaking and compositional design is inspiring. I lived in Japan as a high school student and was drawn to woodblock prints. I am still influenced by this aesthetic when it comes to flowers, the simplification of them and strong use of shape, decoration and colour.

Margaret Olley- I delivered her some flowers once through my work as a florist. I told her I was an artist and she started to give me advice- she told me “whatever you do… don’t get a grant!”. She told me that she thought that work was very important to young artists, to learn the value of the money that they earnt. I have embraced my work as a florist and can see a synergy in the way I work. I draw from it to make my paintings better. She inspired me with her character, talent and drive.

IMG_5955

4) With your own art practice, where would you like to be in 10 years.

I’d like to be making beautiful paintings in a studio in a country garden. Showing interstate and overseas. Working across mediums.

IMG_5954

5) What kind of art training have you had?

I studied Art History and Theory in my undergraduate degree at Sydney Uni when I was doing an Asian Studies degree in Japanese language there. I did a few Tin Sheds courses as well. Then I completed a Master of Art at COFA in Printmaking and Painting. I’ve always done life drawing and did a drawing marathon in New York last year at the New York Studio School as well.

IMG_5951

6) Can you tell us about your process when creating an artwork?

I like to paint from life whether it be portraits or still life. I like the challenge and the speed required for it! It forces me to be decisive and bold. I make a loose underpainting in bright colours and then work all over the whole surface evenly until it builds up. I work in bursts and sit back on my couch to look at it until I’m ready to jump up again. I like to keep moving through the work.

IMG_5957

7) In the arts is social media helpful or not and why?

I use instagram to upload photographs of my work in progress and studio. I think it can support your online presence by being a more casual and conversational platform than your website. I love taking photos so instagram suits me. It has opened up my work to a wider audience and I’ve had a few opportunities come my way because of it.

IMG_5974

8) What’s the funniest thing you’ve heard someone say about your own work?

I can’t remember. Plenty.

Laura Jones_Poppies_2012

9) What’s next on the agenda?

More flower paintings and studio interiors, and nudes.
Maunsell Wickes Gallery in March.

IMG_5973

10) What is your advice to children who want to be artists?

Draw, paint, make, do. Doing is the most important. You just know it in your bones if you want to be an artist, and you won’t
be able to help it anyway, so make sure you follow your instincts when it comes to deciding whether to keep going with it.

IMG_5964

11) How are you finding the current art market?

It seems fine at my level but I think this current state of flux effects more established artists and it’s hard for people to find galleries to show with.

12) Name four things that you can’t do without in your studio?

My brown couch that cost $70 when I had a studio in Windsor. It’s been with me in every studio I’ve had, I’m so attached to it!
Tea or Coffee
Paint
Something to paint on.

IMG_5977

13) If you couldn’t be an artist what would you be?

A pilot.

14) Where can we find more about Laura Jones?

UpRaw: Great Art Unearthed
Gain access to raw, unadulterated talent from the world’s best emerging artists
Be the first to own artwork by emerging artists from around the world at the launch of UpRaw, an online platform
for early career artists. Art lovers and collectors will be able to access unique art pieces without the exorbitant
price-tag through UpRaw’s website dedicated to connecting raw creative talent with art enthusiasts.

Part of Sydney-based art investment company Art Equity, UpRaw is pushing the boundaries of showcasing and
selling art. CEO Raj Nanda marvels that just 10 years ago selling online was in its infancy and online galleries
were rare.

Now it’s a valuable platform for emerging and established artists to expose their work to the global art world. “As
pioneers in the business of selling art online we see UpRaw as a natural development, with the website’s easy to
navigate functionality and shopping cart facilities,” he explains.

“UpRaw is an affordable entry to art collecting. We make a point of offering original artworks that are accessible to
all art enthusiasts, with prices starting at under AU$200 and nothing priced over AU$2,000. We also provide free
shipping within Australia and New Zealand,” he adds.

Ralph Hobbs, Art Director and an artist represented by UpRaw notes being able to showcase and sell high quality
artworks online is an opportunity to broaden artists’ reach and expose their work to a wider audience that “may
be intimidated by the gallery scene or not necessarily have time to go to openings”.

“The reality is that the internet is a global market place and at UpRaw there is a serious understanding of the way
art and the internet work together. It has exposed my art to a far greater audience than I would normally be able
to create,” adds Hobbs.

“UpRaw looks after all the issues associated with selling work, so I can get on and do it. So far as UpRaw is
concerned I can produce the work and watch it sell to people I will probably never know. As an artist, that is a
great feeling.”

“Over the 9 years of building Art Equity, we’ve been exposed to hundreds of talented early career artists. We’ve
kept our eye on them, mentored many of them and are now thrilled to be able to represent them through UpRaw.”

Currently, almost 20 Australian and international artists are represented by UpRaw. Mediums range from
traditional oil paintings, photography, drawings and original prints to stencil art.

Artists have been carefully selected through a number of criteria; Hobbs says they are required to go above and
beyond “decorative work to maintain technical and conceptual substance.” The combined experience of the staff
at Art Equity and UpRaw are just as valuable to buyers.

Emma Crott, Coordinator of UpRaw, says “we are committed to not only providing an online exhibition space but
curating various art initiatives and pop-up shows in Australia and beyond so customers can experience the works
in a physical environment.”
“We are always seeking new and exciting ways to showcase our artists’ work, for example we regularly exhibit at
EMI Music on Flinders Street (Sydney) as part of their Art Project. Collaborations with the music, fashion and food
industries allow us to promote our artists to a broad range of people and create a dialogue with other cultural
entities.”

The Red Rattler Theatre is now looking for new directors to join a dedicated and enthusiastic team to run one of Sydney’s newest and most innovative venues.

What skills do I need to be a director?

• a cover letter explaining what skills you can contribute (1 page maximum)
• your curriculum vitae and short biography (1 page maximum)

What is the Red Rattler Theatre Inc, and what are the Red Rattler’s future plans?
The Red Rattler is the realisation of the collective dream of five local queer woman artists, who wanted to create a legal warehouse-style venue to showcase alternative Sydney arts, performance and grassroots activism. It has been an active artist run initiative for 4 years, running as an indie, not-for-profit, volunteer run, fully licensed warehouse space. It also includes two artist studios. The Red Rattler Theatre Inc has become a creative playground for performers, musicians, artists, designers, new media makers, experimentalists, film-makers, theorists, activists, writers, collective organisers, and local punters.

The Red Rattler has recently moved from a collective partnership governing model to a not-for-profit incorporated arts association. The new board will be involved in the development and planning of the 2013-2014 creative program, the establishment of the Red Rattler as an entity with deductible gift recipient status, and more exciting projects!

IN STUDIO with Mark Rowden

Mark Rowden

           1) Who is Mark Rowden?

A printmaker, artist and father. Born in the UK, I moved to Sydney in the late 90’s. I make art works concentrating on relief prints. I believe that being an artist is simple = you just have to make art, no one else will make it for you unless you’re Andy Warhol!

20121208_110542

2) Explain your current body of work?

My Current body of art has two strands, the overlapping connection is that they are all high contrast lino-cut prints. The first is a collection of memories of childhood, a playful grouping of images that have all been hand coloured. The second group is a collection of portraits that are more sensual and suggetive.

3) If you can pick one artist as an inspiration, who would it be and why?

As everybody says..this is a hard question. I can only narrow it down to three artists: Caspar David Friedrich, Anselm Kiefer and Alfred Sisley.
A very eclectic grouping I know, but I find they all bring a tonality to their works that I like. They produce is a vibe that I connect to, a sensation that provokes me into thought and generally gets me into the head space that allows me to work. Another big inspiration to me is snow. A friend of mine and fellow artist, Tim Smith, once described snow’s effect on the artist’s eye beautifully: “When the snow lands on the ground, it takes all the middle ground away and leaves the core information that is needed for the mind to connect the pieces”, which is exactly right and for me these artists have that tone in some of their works.

Deck chair on the beach - Mark Rowden

4) With your own art/art practice, where would you like to be in 10 years?

I’d love to be able to live off my art, have a permanent studio and inspire people with what I create.

20121209_164840

5) What kind of art training have you had?

1 year of study at an art school in the UK and 4 years in Australia (at National Art School). On top of this I’ve done 8 years of fine art editioning for artists including Charles Blackman, John Olsen, Adam Cullen and McLean Edwards to name a few. Editioning is terrific training – you are teaching and learning at the same time. When you edition with a painter the conversations you have teach you so much.

20121208_134806

6) Can you tell us about your process when creating an artwork?

It’s usually a three-step process: make a drawing on the block, carve it and then print it. The main thing with the printmaking process is how many times the image you’re creating can change throughout each stage, unlike a painting where each mark is seen straight away and that is the mark.

20121209_165103

7) In the arts is social media helpful or not and why?

It’s a sure fire way to get your business out there. I use it all the time. I use Twitter, WordPress and Facebook, privately and through my ‘sydney galleries and art community’ blog. It connects people and I have tried to use it in away that the people know what they are getting with me, keeping it on subject and keeping focused. It’s like any other medium though – to make it work you have to direct it to the right people, the ones that matter, and you must keep your messages true and on point. But art can still speak for itself, if it’s good people will find out.

20121208_110547

8) What was the funniest thing you’ve heard someone say about your own work?

The words that come to mind are “You’ve got detention”. I was never a word person and when it came to my English class it was all words! So when I got some home work to make up a story about anything, I wrote one page A4 of a great story, followed by nine pages of drawing to accompany it. My teacher said it was time to step up and write more, draw less, and my response was, “Isn’t a picture worth a thousand words?” Wrong response.

9) What is on the agenda for the next couple of months?

I have a solo show at the Sydney Children’s Hospital at Randwick opening Feb 7, then I’m part of a group show in Melbourne at Off The Kerb gallery opening March 8. Then my work will be part of ‘Conductor’s Project’, an art initiative at Museum and St James train stations, in June. Then after that a break to refresh and get the ideas flowing again, along with enjoying being a dad.

Long Day - Mark Rowden

http://www.facebook.com/events/200737780064468

10) What is your advice to children who want to be artists?

Do it if it’s the one thing you wake up wanting to do and the last thing you are thinking about as you go to sleep. Don’t feel like you have to work with canvas or hung in an art gallery to be an artist either – you can be an architect, a graphic designer, or even create computer games.
Just put some art in your life, have fun and you’ll get there.

20121209_164808

11) How are you finding the current art market?

Can’t lie, it’s hard out there and people are looking at new markets and new ways to earn a living. It’s not all about the money either but it sure does help you get the right equipment and space to make works. But just make art when and where you can, as long as you are making it, that’s all that matters.

20121209_164903

12) Name four things that you cannot do without in your studio?

My computer, music to listen to, a good coffee from my local and a 4B pencil.

Le Bain - Mark Rowden

13) If you couldn’t be an artist what would you be?

Apparently I wanted to be a fireman when I was little so I’ll go with that.

Broadside Zine ISSUE#5 Artist Callout
It’s that time again… people are hassling us about “when is the next issue coming out?” which means we have to start actually working on it, bummer. I mean woo! WOOOO!

We need stuff to put in it, which is where you come in!

For anyone who’s late to the Broadside party, or you woke up in our editor’s house missing a kidney and are trying to make yourself useful so she’ll give it back… ART! ROCK AND ROLL! BLACK AND WHITE! Other buzzwords! Past issues here:

ISSUE#4: http://www.broadsidezine.tumblr.com/post/31856564224/
ISSUE#3: http://www.broadsidezine.tumblr.com/post/27244711970/
ISSUE#2: http://www.broadsidezine.tumblr.com/post/22892378952/
ISSUE#1: http://www.broadsidezine.tumblr.com/post/22581772277/

Give us your…
VISUAL ART – Sends us BLACK AND WHITE, reasonably high resolution drawings, photography, paintings, things done by computer witchcraft, whatever. If it’s interesting or “WAY RADCORE!!” we will probably like it and you’re on your way to living in a cred-front apartment on a sea of cred.
As always, boobies are welcome.
WORDS – Send us poetry, musings on the kids today, gardening tips… as long as it’s the kind of thing you’d be interested in reading. Absolute limit of 1 A4 page or we start getting creative with editing and you’ll find out you actually submitted an article on how much you suck and can’t follow length guidelines.
OTHER SHIT – We’re always posting miscellaneous stuff on our blog, so if you want us to promote music or videos or other shit it’s physically impossible to print, come chat us up on signalsfromthefrontier@gmail.com. We write bitchin’ reviews, so feel free to invite us to stuff, particularly if there’s alcohol involved.
