Call for Artists: Lane Cove Council’s Recycled Reindeers Project
Submittal Deadline: Friday 11 October 2013
Lane Cove Council is calling for expressions of interest from local and greater Sydney artists, designers and craftsperson’s interested in participating in a recycled reindeer project to coincide with Christmas 2013.
Seven artists/designers/craftspeople will be commissioned to design and build a three dimensional, weather resistant reindeer sculpture using recycled and repurposed materials. The completed works will pop-up in various locations throughout the local area in December 2013.
Council is seeking designs that are innovative, imaginative and bold. Successful proposals will be of a high standard in both concept and execution, while recognising public safety concerns and durability. Commissioned artists will be paid a one off payment of $1000. Council will also contribute up to $250 towards the cost of materials and, if required, a wire reindeer frame.
The project has been designed to highlight the need to think carefully about our waste at Christmas time. It encourages the community to interact and engage with issues of sustainability through innovative artistic practice using recycled and reappropriated materials.
The Recycled Reindeer project is an initiative of Lane Cove Council and is funded by the Sustainability Levy.

Completed applications must be received by Friday 11 October 2013 and will be selected by Lane Cove Council’s Internal Public Art Committee. All applicants will be notified by email and successful parties will be provided with further project details.

Gallery Lane Cove would like to invite you to submit work for a Public Art Commission in Lane Cove. This is an opportunity for photographers to get exposure for their work in the public domain. In collaboration with the VOCE-N-ALE festival of Vocal Art, Communication and Expression, we ask photographers to respond to the theme “Art and Language”.
The photographer selected will be offered an exhibition, which will hang in the outdoor forecourt, outside Gallery Lane Cove, which will engage the local community in the visual language of photography and reflect on the above theme.
The winning photographer will have their body of work printed on 12 outdoor canvas panels to, and includes approximately 12 -13 images. Images need to be ready for printing Monday 14th October. The Youth Arts Program at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead operates out of The Department of Adolescent Medicine and aims to engage hospitalised patients in meaningful creative experiences with the goal of enhancing a patients’ general wellbeing.

The aim of the Interactive Art Project is to engage consumers of the hospital in an interactive art experience that reinterprets the hospital space and which facilitates connections and dialogue between patients, families, hospital staff and art practitioners. The Youth Arts Program is looking for proposals of interactive art and installations as well as workshops for young children and adolescents.

The Youth Arts Program, in association with guest curator Tom Isaacs, would like to invite artists with relevant artworks or practices to make a submission. All mediums and contemporary visual arts practices are welcome to apply.

Call to Photographers – Public Art Commission
Gallery Lane Cove would like to invite you to submit work for a Public Art Commission in Lane Cove. This is an opportunity for photographers to get exposure for their work in the public domain. In  collaboration with the VOCE-N-ALE festival of Vocal Art, Communication and Expression, we ask photographers to respond to the theme “Art and Language”.
The photographer selected will be offered an exhibition, which will hang in the outdoor forecourt, outside Gallery Lane Cove, which will engage the local community in the visual language of photography and reflect on the above theme. The winning photographer will have their body of work printed on 12 outdoor canvas panels to, and includes approximately 12 -13 images. Images need to be ready for printing Monday 14th October. A fee of
$2000 will be paid to the photographer for their images. Please email all submissions to

IN STUDIO with Lexi Land

   

1) Who is Lexi Land?

That’s a good question.

 

2) Explain your current body of work?

ILLUMINATING DARKNESS ‘Dissected Dreamscapes of a Lunartic’ will be a series of mixed media images and drawings.

I want to get what’s on the inside out; I’m interested in emotion, madness, dreams and the unconscious. The mixed media images have been pieced together using my visual library of body parts, I’ve taken a million self-portraits by candlelight and then spent hours cutting every part of me into piece’s to form surreal dark,  beautiful images. And ‘Dissected Dreamscapes of a Lunartic’ are a series of small pencil drawings. I’m a lunartic, hypnotised by the beauty of the silvery night melon, I go mad…  the drawings are demented erotic figures that exist from that madness.

3) If you can pick one artist as an inspiration, who would it be and why?

At the moment I love the drawings of Hans Bellmer and his dolls, photographs and paintings. Bellmer’s emotive obsession for the erotic and his twisted fragmented figures are a raw, rebellious and bold reminder to remain fearless!

4) With your own art/art practice, where would you like to be in 10 years?

Inspired, smoking cigars, using my long black ponytail like a whip, like a brush, covered in ink, getting my hands dirty, collected, written about, painted, in films, set up in a few different countries, writing poetry, naked, courageous, exhibiting and free!

5) What kind of art training have youn had?

I’m a maverick and a loner, I like to discover things on my own, at my own pace, so no ‘training’ so to speak but my teachers appear everyday in unexpected ways, unplanned and brimming with advice. I am thirsty for knowledge and naturally curious and interested in self-education. I never stop, art is my existence and my work is a personal recording of my experience in this life, it’s raw and instinctive and initiated by a true impulse to create.

6) Can you tell us about your process when creating an artwork?

I begin from a sketch- the sketch begins from a feeling, I see something that looks like something else, I examine it deeply then form an image, then one image leads to another and I develop a body of work. Then the fun part, I get naked, turn all the lights out, play dark mysterious music and light candles, I hang a black drop sheet, I set up my camera on a tripod but the tripod’s broken, so I have to balance it on a book, I choose a heavy book ‘the anatomy of the eye and the orbit’ (I got this book second hand it was owned by a Dr Wong Tze, who bought it in London in 1962 and I think it’s haunted) I set up a mirror behind the camera so I can confirm my figure is in the desired shape and the camera is capturing it. I try to get the light moody and exact, which usually leads to me spilling hot wax on my body…. I put the camera on self timer and move, I look at the image and try to get it like my sketch but I usually go with something completely different, sometimes I flick through old art magazines and replicate the figures form paintings. When I have lots of shapes to work with I upload the images, choose my favourites, cut them up, print them out and draw directly onto the surface, I have a vague idea of what I want but I always find something new.

7) In the arts is social media helpful or not and why?

Yeah it’s good – It’s quick and easy and right at the fingertips.

9) What is on the agenda for the next couple of months?

The opening of my annual Lexi Land exhibition ‘ILLUMINATING DARKNESS’ it opens Wednesday September 25 After the show I want adventure, somewhere gutsy to gather inspiration for my next series.

10) What is your advice to children who want to be artists?

Nurture the world of your imagination, fertilize it, let it grow wild and allow it the  freedom to go wherever it desires. Be true to your vision and impulse and never  stop creating.

11) How are you finding the current art market?

Words on business are valuable but they are ultimately distracting and my inclination, by nature, is to be creative… I am born to imagine and I let the rest  fall in to place.

12) Name four things that you cannot do without in your studio?

Paper, Porn, Pencil,  Poetry.

13) ) If you couldn’t be an artist what would you be?

Wishing I could be and wondering why I wasn’t or questioning what was stopping me.

The theme for this years Art & About is Private Lives – Public Spaces. PLATFORM72 will be curating artworks & performance nights at OAF which explore the idea of Dirty Little Secrets, a public confessional. We are looking for artworks & performances that address this theme in a wide array of mediums and ideas. We are encouraging the creation of an immersive environment throughout the Gallery Bar.
In conjunction with East Sydney Creative & the City of Sydney we will be hosting events on Wednesday nights for the public to engage with your artworks. We are looking for artists, performers, VJ’s & DJ’s to collaborate on these nights. These will be promoted heavily through the City of Sydney and Art & About.

The Open Day is a fantastic opportunity for you to meet our staff, visit our extensive studio and workshop facilities, and find out about our undergraduate and postgraduate degrees.
You can also find out about the new Bachelor of Visual Arts, a degree that will prepare you to succeed as a practising artist or in a range of creative careers, and become an expert in developing artistic and creative responses to the big issues driving contemporary society.
Taught by practising artists, this hands-on degree will give you skills in a range of media and the opportunity to broaden your education through electives on offer across the university.
You can specialise in painting, photomedia, printmedia, screen arts, sculpture, jewellery and object, all underpinned by vigorous theory and critical studies. And with a unique part-time pathway, studying visual arts is now even more possible.
All day events at the Open Day include the Portfolio Development Drop-In Centre, the Camouflage Cultures exhibition, tours of the campus, film screenings, talks about the new Bachelor of Visual Arts, parents’ seminars, demonstrations, workshops, entertainment, plus much more…

Drawing Festival & Sketchbook Trail to host Australia’s first
Draw on the Mountain 20 – 29 September 2013

A $5000 Acquisitive Art Award – an inaugural Art Festival featuring Workshops, Talks, Exhibitions, Events &
Prize Winning Drawing Competition

Wild Valley Art Park in the Blue Mountains will launch a unique creative art festival in
September 2013 – Australia’s first Drawing Festival and Sketchbook Drawing Trail.

The Drawing Trail Festival Workshops include:

Masterclass – Distorted Point of View with David Fairbairn teaching participants to look beneath the
surface and structures inside our faces and bodies, such as veins, skeletons and muscles, resulting in dynamic works full of linear lines and structure.

On Site – Drawing & Painting with award winning and renowned artist Lucy Culliton where
participants will have individual tuition at Norman Lindsay’s iconic National trust property and gardens.

Masterclass – Plant, Paper, Print with Liz Powell using the natural surrounding of Wild Valley to
source plants and materials to explore and create with. Students will incorporate these into making paper and creating their own prints on the printing press.

Workshop for Adults & Children – Rainforest Sketching with tutor Michael Herron includes a ride  on the new Scenic Railway plus a tour of the rainforest with sketchbooks in hand.
Workshop – Fantastic Flowers with Suzanne Archer takes participants on a journey from small studies of exotic flowers and other plant material to the development of more creative, imaginative
larger drawings using compositions arranged from your original observations.

Classes Beginners to Advanced – A Stroke of Perfection with Michiyo Miwa.  Learn the graceful contemplative form of Japanese ink painting known as sumi-e, learning to control brush strokes with
simplicity and harmony.

COSTS The Draw on the Mountain Sketchbook Trail Competition $45 per adult & Children under 16 $20 – this
includes a sketchbook and map for self-guided Mountain destinations as part of the art trail.  Each participant will have work shown in the competition exhibition.

Due to loss of habitat in the Macquarie Marshes of northern NSW, Sydney city dwellers are now living with large numbers of White Ibises. The White Ibis  (Threskiornis moluccus) is an indigenous Australian bird. To some people, the White Ibis symbolises the sacred Ibis worshiped by the Egyptians or the vast Australian land,  to others it is an irritating nuisance. Alternate colloquial names include “Bin Chicken”, “Dump Chook” or “Tip Turkey”, from its habit of rummaging in garbage. It was known as Mardungurra among the Yindjibarndi people of the central and western Pilbara.
We are looking for artworks that explore inner city living with the white Ibis…the pros and cons.
We are after works that show your point of view…whather  it is raising awareness of indiginous birds, evolution & extinction, or having them nick your child’s sandwich.
