Robert Hughes dies in New York aged 74
On every art lover, student or teacher shelf, lies a book called ‘The shock of the new’ by Robert Hughes.
Shock of the New, was Hughes’s 1980 Book and TV series, It cemented Hughes as the world’s most famous art critic by the New York Times. In 2004 he created the update, ‘The New Shock of the New’. Robert Studley Forrest Hughes born 28 July 1938 was an Australian-born an art critic, writer and television documentary maker who resided in New York from 1970 until the his death 6 August 2012.
In 1964 Hughes left Australia heading for Europe, living for a time in Italy before settling in London 1965. He wrote for many publications including The Art of Australia, The telegraph and The Times to name but a few. He later gained the position as art critic for the Time Magazine, which lasted for over 30 years, moving to New York, this job established him as a leading force in the world of art.
