CALL OUT TO EMERGING ARTISTS

Centrehouse/Gallery Lane Cove invites artists to submit entries to the Lloyd Rees Memorial Youth Art Awards and exhibition. This year’s exhibition will be held in the architect designed Gallery Lane Cove.
The award is open to Australian artists between the ages of 18 and 30 years with works in painting, drawing or printing. Applications are available from Gallery Lane Cove or on our website: http://www.gallerylancove.com.au
There are three prizes available to artists in 2013
1. Lane Cove Council Acquisitive Prize of $5,000 and the opportunity to hold a solo exhibition at the recently opened Gallery Lane Cove

As many of you know sjs gallery is an artist run space and is entirely self-funded….hence we do need some help from time to time to keep spaces like this alive and also to make them better for the community to utilise.
We are holding an art auction in a few weeks and are asking for donations from you or anyone you may know of who has something sitting around they may not want anymore.
We are accepting all mediums really like prints, paintings, jewellery, small sculpture etc etc (if you do donate a print is it possible to have it framed? It doesn’t have to be an amazing frame, just something to make it easy to hang)  ….as every cent helps

The Geelong Gallery invites artists to submit entries for the 2013 Geelong acquisitive print awards. Established in 1996, this biennial prize and exhibition showcases the best in contemporary Australian printmaking practice.
Please note: the award is open to artists practising in recognised printmaking processes (such as intaglio, relief, planographic and digital processes) and does not extend to photographic prints.An exhibition of selected prints will be held at the Geelong Gallery from 31 August to 24 November 2013, from which acquisitions totalling $9,000 will be made including: the Geelong acquisitive print award of $3,000 the Ursula Hoff Institute award of $1,500The Geelong Gallery wishes to thank the Gallery Grasshoppers, an anonymous donor and the Ursula Hoff Institute (UHI) for generously sponsoring this signature event, which assists with the development of the Gallery’s collection while fostering Australian artists and contemporary printmaking practice in general.

*The Stone Villa Inc. is an artist run initiative affiliated with Marrickville council and has been established since 1997 as a community arts centre. The Stone Villa Inc. has 6 permanent members and runs two 6 month residencies per year, which it provides free to local artists. We consider ourselves to be a community oriented organisation, and as such we provide services in the form of festival projects, technical expertise for Marrickville council community arts projects and the ongoing commitment to our residency program.The Stonevilla studios hold an annual art prize called Vortex. This has usually been an outdoor art exhibition/prize. The prize money is the proceeds of an annual fundraiser held in December.

Hazelhurst Regional Gallery & Arts Centre invites all artists to submit works either on or made principally with paper for selection in the 2013 Hazelhurst Art Award. Artists can submit up to three works, with those selected hanging from 6 July to 25 August 2013. Hazelhurst, in partnership with Global Specialised Services (GSS), sponsors both the major award of $15 000 and the Emerging Artist’s Award of $5000. The Friends of Hazelhurst Local Artist prize is $5000. The general public will again have the chance to vote for their favourite work, with the winner receiving the $1000 People’s Choice Award.

Cementa_13 – 40 artists over 4 days
Cementa_13 is a biennial contemporary arts festival taking place in the post-industrial town of Kandos NSW.
Over forty  artists will exhibit video, installation, sound, 2d and 3d artworks in venues and locations across the town.
Venues will include shop fronts, vacant lots, a disused school, scout hall, local pub, the local museum, golf-course,
people’s homes, the surrounding bushlands, etc.  The work will address the identity, history, and current social,
environmental and economic context of the town.   Both walking and cycling tours will be given every day of the festival,
introducing audiences to the town, along a route that will incorporate all of the major exhibitions,
emphasizing environmentally sound modes of transport.
In addition, there will be specialised tours including an edible weed tour of the surrounding country,
a bicycle tour by ARTcycle inc. of local bushland, an escarpment hike and a winery tour.

What is the Red Rattler Theatre Inc, and what are the Red Rattler’s future plans?
The Red Rattler is the realisation of the collective dream of five local queer woman artists, who wanted to create a legal warehouse-style venue to showcase alternative Sydney arts, performance and grassroots activism. It has been an active artist run initiative for 4 years, running as an indie, not-for-profit, volunteer run, fully licensed warehouse space. It also includes two artist studios. The Red Rattler Theatre Inc has become a creative playground for performers, musicians, artists, designers, new media makers, experimentalists, film-makers, theorists, activists, writers, collective organisers, and local punters.

The Red Rattler has recently moved from a collective partnership governing model to a not-for-profit incorporated arts association. Small space, approx 7.5 sq mtrs, with great view of the bowling greens available from 4 February 2013.
The studio is upstairs at the rat with access to the rooftop garden and 1st floor amenities. Would suit ARTIST, ACTIVIST or WRITER. This is a non-smoking and non-residential space. Lease term starts at 3 months with option to extend. $50/wk.
The Red Rattler Theatre is an independent non-profit community-based legally licensed warehouse run and staffed by unpaid volunteers. Downstairs houses a live performance venue and events playground, upstairs there is a garden, laundry sink, 2 toilets and currently 3 artists studios in operation.
It is preferable that studio residents be willing to contribute or get involved in The Red Rattler in the spirit of the DIY collective ethos of space (contributions / involvement may include accepting mail or deliveries when available, helping with maintenance if able, watering the plants in the garden if they’re looking thirsty, volunteering at the bar etc – we do not expect you be all hands on all the time – but helpful willing people are especially invited to apply)

           1) Who is Mark Rowden?

A printmaker, artist and father. Born in the UK, I moved to Sydney in the late 90′s. I make art works concentrating on relief prints. I believe that being an artist is simple = you just have to make art, no one else will make it for you unless you’re Andy Warhol!

2) Explain your current body of work?

My Current body of art has two strands, the overlapping connection is that they are all high contrast lino-cut prints. The first is a collection of memories of childhood, a playful grouping of images that have all been hand coloured. The second group is a collection of portraits that are more sensual and suggetive.

3) If you can pick one artist as an inspiration, who would it be and why?

As everybody says..this is a hard question. I can only narrow it down to three artists: Caspar David Friedrich, Anselm Kiefer and Alfred Sisley.
A very eclectic grouping I know, but I find they all bring a tonality to their works that I like. They produce is a vibe that I connect to, a sensation that provokes me into thought and generally gets me into the head space that allows me to work. Another big inspiration to me is snow. A friend of mine and fellow artist, Tim Smith, once described snow’s effect on the artist’s eye beautifully: “When the snow lands on the ground, it takes all the middle ground away and leaves the core information that is needed for the mind to connect the pieces”, which is exactly right and for me these artists have that tone in some of their works.

4) With your own art/art practice, where would you like to be in 10 years?

I’d love to be able to live off my art, have a permanent studio and inspire people with what I create.

5) What kind of art training have you had?

1 year of study at an art school in the UK and 4 years in Australia (at National Art School). On top of this I’ve done 8 years of fine art editioning for artists including Charles Blackman, John Olsen, Adam Cullen and McLean Edwards to name a few. Editioning is terrific training – you are teaching and learning at the same time. When you edition with a painter the conversations you have teach you so much.

6) Can you tell us about your process when creating an artwork?

It’s usually a three-step process: make a drawing on the block, carve it and then print it. The main thing with the printmaking process is how many times the image you’re creating can change throughout each stage, unlike a painting where each mark is seen straight away and that is the mark.

7) In the arts is social media helpful or not and why?

It’s a sure fire way to get your business out there. I use it all the time. I use Twitter, WordPress and Facebook, privately and through my ‘sydney galleries and art community’ blog. It connects people and I have tried to use it in away that the people know what they are getting with me, keeping it on subject and keeping focused. It’s like any other medium though – to make it work you have to direct it to the right people, the ones that matter, and you must keep your messages true and on point. But art can still speak for itself, if it’s good people will find out.

8) What was the funniest thing you’ve heard someone say about your own work?

The words that come to mind are “You’ve got detention”. I was never a word person and when it came to my English class it was all words! So when I got some home work to make up a story about anything, I wrote one page A4 of a great story, followed by nine pages of drawing to accompany it. My teacher said it was time to step up and write more, draw less, and my response was, “Isn’t a picture worth a thousand words?” Wrong response.

9) What is on the agenda for the next couple of months?

I have a solo show at the Sydney Children’s Hospital at Randwick opening Feb 7, then I’m part of a group show in Melbourne at Off The Kerb gallery opening March 8. Then my work will be part of ‘Conductor’s Project’, an art initiative at Museum and St James train stations, in June. Then after that a break to refresh and get the ideas flowing again, along with enjoying being a dad.

10) What is your advice to children who want to be artists?

Do it if it’s the one thing you wake up wanting to do and the last thing you are thinking about as you go to sleep. Don’t feel like you have to work with canvas or hung in an art gallery to be an artist either – you can be an architect, a graphic designer, or even create computer games.
Just put some art in your life, have fun and you’ll get there.

11) How are you finding the current art market?

Can’t lie, it’s hard out there and people are looking at new markets and new ways to earn a living. It’s not all about the money either but it sure does help you get the right equipment and space to make works. But just make art when and where you can, as long as you are making it, that’s all that matters.

12) Name four things that you cannot do without in your studio?

My computer, music to listen to, a good coffee from my local and a 4B pencil.

13) If you couldn’t be an artist what would you be?

Apparently I wanted to be a fireman when I was little so I’ll go with that.

This is a great development and leadership opportunity whilst having fun, meeting new people and giving back to the community.

Summer Residency – Yarra Sculpture Gallery
After the great success of the 2012 Winter Residency program, the Contemporary Sculptors Association is inviting applications from emerging and established artists for a 6 week Summer Residency at the Yarra Sculpture Gallery.
They are offering the opportunity for artists to experiment and expand their practice, a time to take chances and explore possibilities. They are looking, ideally, for artists who would like to have the opportunity to create installation or large scale sculptural works within the gallery space.
Up to five artists will be selected and allocated one of the gallery spaces in which to work. Artists will have 24 hour non residential access to the space. An Open Studio will be held on the last weekend of the residency, where the artists can present any finished work or discuss work in progress with other artists and the public.

Please rank your preferences for spaces, if you have them, in your application. They will endeavor to accommodate your choices but cannot make any guarantees.
Applicants will need to provide a CV, 5 images of current or relevant work (1MB max each image) and a 250 word proposal for the residency. Successful applicants would be required to join the CSA if not already members.

Costs and commitments:
Successful applicants who are current CSA members are required to pay $150 to cover rent and bills.
Future members pay $210 Full / $180 concession – includes annual membership to the CSA.
A $100 bond is required from all participating artists. This will be returned at the end of the residency, providing that the space is returned to previous working order.
They don’t police commitment or working hours and understand that everyone has different working methods, but their expectations are that you would be using the space for a minimum of 15 hours per week and will be available for the open studios.

The Gallery is getting festive this year and hosting a Twilight Christmas Market on Sunday 2 December from 3pm-7pm.  The stalls will be selling unique artisan gifts, cards, food delights, home wares, plants, clothing, and much more.

As a special initiative, and following in the tradition of artist Margo Lewers, who used her artistry to create cards and gifts for friends and family, the Gallery has produced for sale plants propagated from our Heritage Garden and a series of Christmas cards inspired by Margo’s collaged works.

So, forget the stressful Christmas shopping experience and bring the family down to the Gallery for a fun afternoon. In addition to the market stalls visitors will be able to listen to artist talks in the Gallery spaces, music in the heritage gardens, enjoy a tasty BBQ sausage sandwich and Cafe at Lewers will be serving festive beverages for the whole family to enjoy. Don’t miss the opportunity to find a special hand crafted gift as well as the ability to meet the maker. The Twilight Market day will be an enjoyable event for all ages.

SlowArt Productions presents Emerging Artists 2013
The 21st annual competition for group exhibition and awards. Open to all artists working in any media this event is devoted to the discovery, introduction and promotion of emerging artists.

The competition is open to all artists, national and international, working in all media. All forms of painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, graphics, digital and installation art, video, etc. are eligible. Entrants must be 18 years of age or older to apply. Wall mounted works must not be taller than 96″ no wider
than 120″. Sculptural work must fit through a standard height, 36″wide entry door.

Winning artists will be featured in a group exhibition at the Limner Gallery, April 4 – 28, 2013. The exhibition will also be displayed on the Limner Gallery web site. There will be a $1000 cash prize awarded to one artist. One artist will be awarded a two page display in Direct Art Volume #20, Fall 2013 issue. Two artists will be awarded a single page display.

There is a $35.00 entry fee for one to four artworks entered, presentation is by digital JPG image files and/or print reproductions. There is a $5.00 fee for each additional artwork above four.

NOVEMBERISM
Sydney’s Underground Music-Video Festival

ATVP – Thurs 29th November – Thurs 6th December 2012
Curated by Sarah O’Connell & Kristy Day in conjunction with Pedro TV

Novemberism is an annual celebration of video and music artists in Australia. It will showcase music videos made by Australian filmmakers and the associated music artists.

This year twelve successful music-video applicants will have their work shown over the course of three heats. During each heat four of the twelve music videos will be shown and a finalist will be chosen by our panel of judges to proceed to the final. In the fourth and final heat, the audience will vote for their favorite and the winner will receive the ‘People’s Choice Award’ worth $500.

Thurs 29th Novemebr, 6-10pm – Final
We will also be accepting submissions for music inspired artworks to be exhibited alongside the Music Videos for the duration of the Festival.
During each heat, there will be LIVE performances from musicians and performance artists.

Submissions are now open until 6:00pm Monday 25th November.

Artists, filmmakers and musicians are encouraged to enter music videos for any original works with the permission of all parties involved.
