Call for Proposals – Solid Ground II: Echoes
Solid Ground II: Echoes Curated by Tom Macphail*
13 – 30 June 2013
With a Federal election approaching, Solid Ground II: Echoes is an inquiry into the current debates pertaining to asylum seekers and refugees within Australia by bringing together a range of artists and writers, aiming to approach the subject by expressing a variety of viewpoints, observations and lived experiences.
The aim of the exhibition is to focus on the facts of the current issues whilst considering Australia’s immigration history, international context and the political rhetoric and media sensationalism that has marred the issues and demonized ‘boat people’. The ‘White Australian’ policy of earlier decades demonstrates that Australian’s fear of outsiders is nothing new, yet the current polarization of the voting public reveals issues of underlying xenophobia that we have yet to shake off.
At The Vanishing Point gallery, in association with OPEN Marrickville is calling for artists whose artworks/practices are engaged with the above subject and writers who are looking to be published with the show’s accompanying zine. All medium and contemporary visual arts practices are welcome to apply.
Propose up to 5 artworks per artist.
Proposals due 6pm Sunday 2 June.
For a proposal form http://www.atthevanishingpoint.com.au/web_images/2013_ProposalCalls/Solid%20Ground%20II%20Echoes%20Proposal%20FORM_WEB.pdf
For further information http://www.atthevanishingpoint.com.au/index.php?p=9_6

*Solid Ground II: Echoes is supported by funding from Marrickville Council’s Open Marrickville festival & ATVP’s Emerging Curator Mentorship program, supported by The Visual Arts and Craft Strategy and the NSW Government through Arts NSW.

The Fish Bowl - new project space call out
The Fish Bowl – new project space call out
As you may have heard the new Dean (Ross Harley) has given his offices on the ground floor of D-block to the student body as exhibition or project spaces.
These glass walled rooms look out on to the courtyard and are an amazing place to conduct performances, live art production, and exhibit installations.
This new space is called The Fish Bowl. It will be open to any student* who wishes to use it. One room is for a week-long exhibition of work/ experimental project, another is a casual space to trial installation possibilities of your work for a few hours.
All you need to do to gain access to these awesome new rooms is to send a proposal to the Courtyard Collective via the Arc Office at COFA. As long as you aren’t using anything problematic like a raging bonfire or litres of sulphuric acid, we’ll slot you in!
Contact us at cofa@arc.unsw.edu.au
*you must be an Arc member…it’s free!

WALLPEOPLE LOGO1 wallpeople_01
Wallpeople is a collaborative art event that happens in 45 cities around the world at the same time. A city wall will become a makeshift outdoor gallery, where all participants may exhibit their own works and collaborate to create an improvised open-air museum.
This year, Sydney joins the global network of creatives for the first time, and invites all city artists & creative enthusiasts alike to join us on the 1st of June in Newtown.
Created in Barcelona in 2009, Wallpeople invites people to create and be a part of a unique experiment in an urban space, thus making an ephemeral street artwork.
Wallpeople 2013 – MUSIC EDITION
The guiding theme for 2013 is MUSIC. We want everyone to express their unique relationship with music, no matter what genre or style. The participants have two possibilities:
1. Reinterpret a song in an artistic format of choice: illustration, photography, text, painting, collage, canvas…
2. Create any art work related to music in a general way: For example: a tribute to an artist, a concert, a musical moment of your life, your favourite style, musical origins…
HOW TO PARTICIPATE?
1.Everyone can participate. You just need to join the event on Facebook.
2.On 1st of June at 12:00pm, go to Camperdown Memorial Rest Park in Newtown with one or more of your works.
3.Works will be accepted in any format: drawing, painting, illustration, photography, collage, paste-up, comics, paper, cardboard, wood (light), fabric, crochet, prints, mixed compositions, plates, postcards, craft, origami, album covers, vinyl, painted cassettes, a post-it, etc.
4.Stick your work(s) on the wall with the rest of the works. If your inspiration is a particular song, you must indicate the name of the track and the artist.
5.Wallpeople team will have the necessary adhesives but we still ENCOURAGE YOU TO BRING YOUR OWN MOUNTING TAPE OR ADHESIVE TAPE if possible, to facilitate the process. You can also BYO art supplies as we encourage all participants to make live art creations.
6.Wallpeople team will mark the start and ending of the event (about 3-4 hours).
7.At the end of the exhibition, you can take your work back or swap it with another participant’s, thus turning the event into an artistic exchange. If you want, you can write down your contact information, in case who took your work wants to contact you.
✓ ACCEPTED FORMATS:
• Light works, which can be stuck up to the wall with adhesive tape.
• Any techniques or formats are permitted, provided that the work refers to a musical subject.
✗ WE DON’T ACCEPT:
• Works bigger than 1x1m.
• Works that could cause damage to the wall. Drilling the wall is prohibited.
• Works with offensive or discriminatory content.
When: 1st of June – 12PM
@ Camperdown Memorial Park (Lennox St entrance)

Sydney art exhibitions and gallery openings 25/03/2013 – 31/03/2013 – Sydney Art Galleries and Art Community

24 03 2013

As many a Sydneysider would know, the Archibald, Wynne and Sulman Prize night was on last Friday.
It was a fun evening and here’s a couple of photos from the night.

You make your way up the AGNSW steps to the guards (ticket ladies), surrounded by people trying to get in through any means. When you enter you hit a wall of well-dressed art supporters and arty folk not forgetting a trail of people heading to the bar, nodding to every one as you pass. The speeches come and go, the winners are congratulated, the wine flows and the crowd start their way to see the works down stairs. The buzz, the gossip, the whispers through the gallery… “What do you think?”, “Is that the artist?”,”That’s a good one!” My favourite is “I could better than that!”. When you get a chance have a look at this one, there are some great works, a few that are ok, and a couple you may question but the general vibe is good.

There are lots of artist call outs at the end of the post for you to enter. Take care, see you soon. Email us with all your shows and artist info, cmpetitions, festivals, special offers…Anything art based.

THINGS OF INTEREST + opportunities for artists

SafARI is the unofficial fringe exhibition to the Biennale of Sydney, and 2014 will mark its fifth edition. SafARI showcases the work of emerging and unrepresented Australian artists in multiple sites across Sydney, including Artist Run Initiatives (ARIs) and public spaces. It is timed to coincide with the crucial first opening weeks of the Biennale of Sydney in March 2014.
In the past, SafARI has exhibited the work of sculptors, photographers, installation artists, painters, performance artists, ceramicists, printmakers, digital, video and new media artists, and we are interested in representing the diversity of Australian contemporary arts practice again in 2014. Previous participants in SafARI have gone on to new heights in their practice and careers; artists such as Clark Beaumont, Liam Benson, Tom Polo, Karla Dickens and Mark Rodda.
SafARI is now calling for submissions from emerging and unrepresented artists working across diverse media across Australia to be considered for SafARI 2014. Solo artists and/or groups of one or more artists will be considered.

Submissions should include:
An artist statement (max 300 words)
A proposal of artworks/projects for SafARI 2014 (max 300 words)
Maximum of 10 images and/or footage
1 A4 page CV
Stamped SAE for return of material if required.

Kaldor Public Art Project’s ambitious ‘13 Rooms’
More than 140 local performers will deliver landmark works by some of the world’s best-known artists for Kaldor Public Art Project’s ambitious ‘13 Rooms’ exhibition of ‘living sculpture’
- Performers include identical twins; migrants with long hair; athletically built males with strong foreign accents; and former service men and women  -

Sydney, Australia:  More than 140 local performers have been sourced by Kaldor Public Art Projects to participate in 13 Rooms, the major international contemporary art exhibition of ‘living sculpture’ being presented from 11 until 21 April 2013 at Pier 2/3 in Sydney’s Walsh Bay.

Visitors will be invited to explore 13 purpose-built rooms inside the Pier, entering through one door per room to come face-to-face with living, breathing artworks. 13 Rooms is first exhibition of its kind in Australia, a vital and all-encompassing new experience where art, theatre and dance combine to create immersive and interactive encounters.
13 Rooms is the most ambitious project to be undertaken in the 44-year history of Kaldor Public Art Projects and is curated by two of the world’s most respected museum directors: Hans Ulrich Obrist, Co-director of London’s Serpentine Gallery, and Klaus Biesenbach, Director of MoMA PS1 in New York. Hans Ulrich Obrist, Co-curator of 13 Rooms, described the project recently, saying: ‘The exhibition is like a sculpture gallery where all the sculptures go home at night’.
The 140 performance artists and dancers will perform inside the rooms at Pier 2/3 from 11am until 7pm for the full 11 days of the exhibition.

Artist-residency

Artists are welcome to stay for an agreed period of time either in the house or the studio – depending on availability – to create new work, develop ideas, or work on their projects. The work space will depend on artist’s project requirements. The vision is that the extraordinary beauty of the surroundings will provide a ground for professional development. The house, studio and bushland are available for all kinds of initiatives. Each project will be agreed on individually.
Proposals are welcome throughout the year – each time of year has its own beauty and creative possibilities. It is recommended that proposals are submitted well in advance.
Successful applicants are charged a subsidised residency fee. The 2013 rate is AUD$250 (plus $25 GST) per person per week for Australian artists and AUD$300 (plus $30 GST) for international artists. This includes a private room and shared living facilities, bathroom, kitchen, internet,  electricity, water and artist support.
Successful applicants will be responsible for all other costs including food, transport, travel costs, insurance and art materials. They will be required to pay a refundable bond of AUD$500 prior to occupancy to cover any costs associated with damage or extraordinary cleaning.
BigCi is located on the edge of Wollemi National Park, about one hour and a half away from Sydney. Due to a remote location of the BigCi, a car is strongly recommended. Please note that BigCi does not provide transport and that the artists are responsible for making the neccesary arrangements. In cases when the artist is unable to have a car, we will provide a pick up/drop off from Richmond train station on arrival/departure and once a week transport for food shopping.
Note that there is no stipend or living allowance attached to the stay in BigCi. Interstate and overseas artists in particular should consider other ways to fund their visit.

There is a possibility of an exhibition at the end of the residency and of a presentation on the BigCi website as Resident–in–Spotlight.
To secure the booking, the residency fee including the refundable bond is payable upon the approval of the application form.
All applicants will be notified in writing of the outcome of their application.

SafARI 2014 National Call for Artist Submissions

SafARI is the unofficial fringe exhibition to the Biennale of Sydney, and 2014
will mark its fifth edition. SafARI showcases the work of emerging and
unrepresented Australian artists in multiple sites across Sydney, including
Artist Run Initiatives (ARIs) and public spaces. It is timed to coincide with
the crucial first opening weeks of the Biennale of Sydney in March 2014.
In the past, SafARI has exhibited the work of sculptors, photographers,
installation artists, painters, performance artists, ceramicists, printmakers,
digital, video and new media artists, and we are interested in representing the
diversity of Australian contemporary arts practice again in 2014. Previous
participants in SafARI have gone on to new heights in their practice and
careers; artists such as Clark Beaumont, Liam Benson, Tom Polo, Karla Dickens
and Mark Rodda.
SafARI is now calling for submissions from emerging and unrepresented artists
working across diverse media across Australia to be considered for SafARI 2014.
Solo artists and/or groups of one or more artists will be considered.

Submissions should include:
An artist statement (max 300 words)
A proposal of artworks/projects for SafARI 2014 (max 300 words)
Maximum of 10 images and/or footage

un magazine portada
Call for Proposals for un Magazine volume 7 issue 1

For this issue of un Magazine we want to explore concepts of knowledge and research and the role they play in the production of contemporary art.

Submissions can consider the means and methods by which contemporary artists produce and construct knowledge either by way of academic research or other non-academic, non- institutionalised forms of research or knowledge making. If we accept that our understanding of research practice in science is that it produces ‘new’ or ‘important’ or ‘significant’ knowledge, then what knowledge, if any, is produced by an artwork? Is it possible for an artwork to produce new or important or significant knowledge? And if it does, what form does this take?

un Magazine is interested in articles written by artists as well as by writers that may take the form of research based feature articles, interviews or reviews that address these questions and others related to examining the relationship between contemporary art, research, and knowledge. Proposals for artist pages are also invited and encouraged.

un Magazine content:
We welcome proposals for contributions including but not limited to: criticism or review of contemporary independent art projects, exhibitions and publications (taking place since March 2013); interviews; essays and features on topics that can contribute to current debate; and contributions of experimental contemporary art practice engaged with text, writing or publication modes. Priority is also given to art projects and organisations that are often overlooked by mainstream art publications.

Please email:

-A completed Application Form (PDF) (dowload from un Projects.org.au)
-100 word outline of your proposed writing or an example, or mock-up or description of a proposed artwork
-Full curriculum vitae and a short sample of writing if you are proposing a text contribution
-2-5 images (as small jpeg files only) if relevant
-All submissions and editorial enquiries should be emailed to the Editor: jarrod@unmagazine.org

Applications due 5pm Monday 11 March 2013

Please see application form for further details.

Ever wanted to learn more about the intricacies of the Riso printer? Keen to be part of the core group of people who keep the machine and open print sessions going? Want (limited) out of hours access to the machine? Ever wanted to be paid to teach others how to use the stencil press?

Enrol in our 1 day volunteer training day and get qualified to be an open print volunteer – you’ll be the one helping others in the community use the machine on an open print studio day.

The course is at The Oxford St Design Store (58 Oxford St) from 12-5pm on Sunday 17 March and it’s FREE! But we ask you commit to volunteering for at least 3 open print sessions over the next 6 months.

You’ll learn how to troubleshoot printing, how the administrative and financial side of the collective works (it’s easy, we promise!) and the house rules of the space we’re in. Once you’ve done the course you’ll be rostered on to Saturday open print studio shifts, and can use the machine before and after the sessions for your own printing (at cost price).

After you’ve volunteered for three open print studios we’d love you to keep volunteering, and also think about taking on paid roles running workshops in the space – all our paid workshops include a teaching fee for collective members who teach the courses.

Email us at workshop@rizzeria.com if you want to enrol or have any questions.
When: 12:00pm until 5:00pm
@ Rizzeria Printer – 58 Oxford Street, Darlinghurst

INSTUDIO with Laura Jones

3 03 2013

Laura Jones 2013 instudio

1) Who is Laura Jones?

30 year old painter and printmaker from Sydney.

IMG_5960

2) Explain your current body of work?

Currently I am working on a series of still life paintings. I bring flowers from my work at a flower shop to the studio and paint them over the course of 2 or 3 days. The paintings encapsulate their decay because I respond to them as I see them over that period of time. The flowers are always changing and so interesting shifts occur over the course of the painting, creating slightly abstracted forms that overall have the feeling of being a “flower.” I love the symbolism they hold and the metaphorical power that they have.

IMG_5953

3) If you can pick one artist as an inspiration, who would it be and why?

Can I pick three?
Lara Merrett for her fluidity. I share a studio with her and her paintings are quite autobiographical in a way. I think she is a wonderful and clever colourist. Her work is reflective of her life as a vibrant woman and artist. Also, I’m looking a lot at Margaret Olley and Margaret Preston at the moment.

I love the strong graphic elements of Preston’s work. Her printmaking and compositional design is inspiring. I lived in Japan as a high school student and was drawn to woodblock prints. I am still influenced by this aesthetic when it comes to flowers, the simplification of them and strong use of shape, decoration and colour.

Margaret Olley- I delivered her some flowers once through my work as a florist. I told her I was an artist and she started to give me advice- she told me “whatever you do… don’t get a grant!”. She told me that she thought that work was very important to young artists, to learn the value of the money that they earnt. I have embraced my work as a florist and can see a synergy in the way I work. I draw from it to make my paintings better. She inspired me with her character, talent and drive.

IMG_5955

4) With your own art practice, where would you like to be in 10 years.

I’d like to be making beautiful paintings in a studio in a country garden. Showing interstate and overseas. Working across mediums.

IMG_5954

5) What kind of art training have you had?

I studied Art History and Theory in my undergraduate degree at Sydney Uni when I was doing an Asian Studies degree in Japanese language there. I did a few Tin Sheds courses as well. Then I completed a Master of Art at COFA in Printmaking and Painting. I’ve always done life drawing and did a drawing marathon in New York last year at the New York Studio School as well.

IMG_5951

6) Can you tell us about your process when creating an artwork?

I like to paint from life whether it be portraits or still life. I like the challenge and the speed required for it! It forces me to be decisive and bold. I make a loose underpainting in bright colours and then work all over the whole surface evenly until it builds up. I work in bursts and sit back on my couch to look at it until I’m ready to jump up again. I like to keep moving through the work.

IMG_5957

7) In the arts is social media helpful or not and why?

I use instagram to upload photographs of my work in progress and studio. I think it can support your online presence by being a more casual and conversational platform than your website. I love taking photos so instagram suits me. It has opened up my work to a wider audience and I’ve had a few opportunities come my way because of it.

IMG_5974

8) What’s the funniest thing you’ve heard someone say about your own work?

I can’t remember. Plenty.

Laura Jones_Poppies_2012

9) What’s next on the agenda?

More flower paintings and studio interiors, and nudes.
Maunsell Wickes Gallery in March.

IMG_5973

10) What is your advice to children who want to be artists?

Draw, paint, make, do. Doing is the most important. You just know it in your bones if you want to be an artist, and you won’t
be able to help it anyway, so make sure you follow your instincts when it comes to deciding whether to keep going with it.

IMG_5964

11) How are you finding the current art market?

It seems fine at my level but I think this current state of flux effects more established artists and it’s hard for people to find galleries to show with.

12) Name four things that you can’t do without in your studio?

My brown couch that cost $70 when I had a studio in Windsor. It’s been with me in every studio I’ve had, I’m so attached to it!
Tea or Coffee
Paint
Something to paint on.

IMG_5977

13) If you couldn’t be an artist what would you be?

A pilot.

14) Where can we find more about Laura Jones?
