THINGS OF INTEREST
———————-

The Museum of Contemporary Art Australia opened its doors in March to great public acclaim as a bold new museum for contemporary art and creative learning. With new galleries, enhanced facilities for the public and dedicated facilities for our education programs, the possibilities that the new MCA offers are almost endless. The expanded facilities provide us with the opportunity to meet the increasing interest in contemporary art and the ever growing demand for our programs. With the building complete, it’s now time to focus back on the art and delivering our ground breaking programs.

Occupying 40% of the new wing, the National Centre for Creative Learning is a dynamic and innovative space for learning. The centre is equipped with state-of-the art technology and holds digital and multimedia studios, two practical creative studios, a lecture theatre, seminar room and library. It also houses the Bella Room, a multi-sensory learning and exhibition space for the MCA’s Bella program.

The Bella Program offers workshops to young people who have little or no access to museums and cultural institutions. These children may be experiencing physical, intellectual, emotional or behavioural disabilities, or are disadvantaged due to their financial, social or geographic situation.

The MCA is dedicated to creating accessibility to contemporary art for all and the Bella Program is a vital part of this mission. The Bella workshops were initiated by patrons Cynthia Jackson AM and the late Dr Edward Jackson AM in 1993 and the new facilities give the MCA the opportunity to run this program year round. However, more workshops mean we need to raise more money to fund the program.

Our Annual Appeal this year is therefore focused on the Bella Program – to provide free workshops throughout the year to these very special young people.

Donating to the MCA Annual Appeal is easy and all donations are tax deductible, just click on the link https://app.etapestry.com/bbphosted/nl_mca/OnlineDonation.html. If you have any questions about supporting the MCA please call Lisa Hamilton, Philanthropy Manager on 02 9245 2414 or email development@mca.com.au. I hope you can support this incredible program. With best wishes,

Elizabeth Ann Macgregor  OBE Director

OF LIGHT – Call for Artists! CALL FOR EXHIBITION PROPOSALS: (invite your artistic friends & lovers to the event!)

YOLK Collective invites emerging artists of a range of mediums to submit proposals for our group exhibition ‘OF LIGHT’ before June 6th 2012.

The General Public, particularly tertiary students and graduates, are encouraged to apply. Collaborative projects are also welcomed. Unfettered by medium, we are open to artists working within a variety of disciplines, traditional to experimental.

Exhibition details: ‘OF LIGHT’ will be the debut exhibition curated and mediated by the newly formed YOLK Collective. It is an exhibition centered on manipulations of light, luminosity and electricity. This is a broad theme encompassing works that conceptualise notions of light, and explore visual elements of contrast and chiaroscuro, while also encompassing works using lights or mediums of a luminescent nature.

To accompany the exhibition YOLK Collective will provide an extensive catalogue/magazine at the expense of the Collective to highlight the artists exhibited and other written components we have created. This will be freely distributed around Sydney.

The exhibition will be held at ‘The Barn’ in Mosman at the cost of the Collective over the duration of three days (13-15 July 2012). We are limited to the space and hanging devices at the location. There will be an opening event that will also be the launch of the Collective.

Who are YOLK Collective?

YOLK Collective is a not-for-profit collective comprised of three Art Theory students from COFA.
YOLK Collective’s objective is to create opportunities and editorial for emerging artists.
We also write artist profiles, exhibition reviews, quirky articles, essays, and some of our
projects include small focus exhibitions and events.

- Our written content is also published on our blog: http://yolkcollective.blogspot.com.au/ & supplementary materials on our twitter, facebook, pinterest and instagram. To enquire about proposals/curatorial theme, please contact YOLK Collective at yolkcollective@gmail.com

Please email proposal submissions to yolkcollective@gmail.com

INCLUDE: 2 x high-resolution images of the works with full details (name, year, materials, dimensions), your CV, contact details and a short summary of why you think your works fit the exhibition’s theme ‘OF LIGHT.’ Entries close 06/06/2012 (The earlier you enter the more publicity and editorial we may be able to provide for you).

and participate in guest-led screening events. Collected works will duplicated and transferred to VHS to form a donated video library built
around an eclectic sort of video art, short film, music video, found footage, animation, home movies and experimental works.

$10,000 & A TRIP TO THE UK TO BE AWARDED TO
UP-AND-COMING AUSTRALIAN CREATIVES

- Applications open for the British Council’s 2012 Realise Your Dream awards-

Celebrating 10 years of nurturing Australian creative talent, the British Council’s Realise Your Dream
awards are now bigger and better than ever.

This year, three lucky winners will be awarded a $10,000 cash prize and a return trip to the UK, where
they will be given the chance to meet their creative heroes and to experience all the cultural richness
the UK has to offer.

Realise Your Dream is a unique opportunity for people working within the first 10 years of their career,
in any creative industry – from theatre to publishing, visual art to music, digital media to industrial
design, etc.

Unlike many awards aimed at Australian artistic practitioners, Realise Your Dream allows its winners
to choose their own direction once they get to the UK, whether it’s getting behind the scenes at the
Edinburgh Festival, hanging about the studio observing a prominent artist at work, attending meetings
at major arts organisations. The British Council will draw on its wide network of contacts to help
winners realise their ‘dreams’.

British Council Director Nick Marchand says:

“Approaching the 10 anniversary of Realise Your Dream, we want to celebrate the creative careers
of the 50 young Australians that have used this prize to create incredible opportunities in the UK, over
the last decade. We’re starting the festivities by offering the most significant prize to date, making
sure that this year’s winners have the best possible start to their journey!”

Realise Your Dream entries open Monday 23 April 2012.

Realise Your Dream is a British Council initiative, in association with Virgin Atlantic, BBC Knowledge,
triple j, NIX Co, Boccalatte and Show Group.

To find out more, applicants should head online to http://www.realiseyourdream.org.au
Entries close Sunday 3 June 2012.

OPENINGS AND THE ARTS IN SYDNEY (2.5 Week end of year bumper edition) 05/12/2011 – 26/12/2011

4 12 2011

On a sad note, last week Doug Moran passed away, at age of 86. His generosity for the arts will not be forgotten and our thoughts are with his family.

This is a bumper edition, our last major blog post for the year. After this we’ll be taking a summer holiday, returning in Feb 2012. We won’t be completely silent during this time though – we’ll add interesting events and things to our blog when we hear about them.

To the galleries closing their doors for good at the end of 2011, we will miss you and we wish you all the best for future projects, keep us all informed.

This week sees lots of final shows for the year and the SCA postgrad show, details below. Don’t forget to contribute your work to the fundraising shows for artist-run spaces either – without these galleries, the art scene would look a little drab, so get your work to them.

Next year sees new competitions, posts  and a new section coming (more information coming soon!)

Finally, thank you so much for your support, without you we cannot run as smoothly.

Thankyou, and enjoy you holiday if you get one, at least get into the studio.

Merry Christmas and a happy new year! Mark Rowden

THINGS OF INTEREST

Project52 is about intrigue and the relationship between people,
objects, images and stories.

Each week, for 52 weeks, I create a drawing and a related 52-word
story inspired by objects provided by a participant.

Participants are invited to provide me with an object or a photo.
Within a week, I create an artwork and a story, using their object for inspiration.
In return, you receive a sneak preview before I post the work on my site and you
get the credit for providing the inspiration.

When all 52 works are completed, the project will culminate in an exhibition.
The easiest way to see some of the outputs is to visit my blog

Wednesday 2 May 2012. With the exception of the winning art works that are acquired by
Redlands School, all works exhibited in the Prize will be available for purchase.

About Redlands
Established in 1884, Redlands is a leading Sydney independent school with a reputation
for innovation in education. Over the past 126 years, Redlands has expanded
significantly from its beginnings as a small school of five students to the vibrant, co-
educational, international environment of today and during that time has led much
innovation in education. An extensive range of programs – academic, sports, creative
and performing arts, outdoor education, service – gives students the opportunity to learn,
to achieve and to develop their unique skills and talents.

As in previous years Lindy will select approximately 18 contemporary Australian and
New Zealand artists to participate in the exhibition. Each of the selected artists
will in turn nominate an “emerging” artist to also participate.

The successful selected artist will receive a $20,000 cheque courtesy of Westpac’s sponsorship.
The successful emerging artist will receive a $10,000 cheque courtesy of Konica Minolta.
Both artworks will in turn become part of the School’s teaching collection.

For further information please contact Tina Flemning on 02 9908 6484 or tfleming@redlands.nsw.edu.au

OIL PAINTING CLASSES with Celia Gullett

Applications are now open for a one year course in oil painting classes with Celia Gullett. This course is designed to familiarize students with the historical principles and techniques of painting. The central theme of the course is to investigate and understand how artists have tackled the difficulty of creating three dimensions on a flat surface. Artists from numerous periods of western painting have passed down invaluable methods to achieve a range of effects in oils. By focusing on the use of underpainting systems, and painting in layers, it is envisaged that students will expand their repertoire and be able to bring greater purpose and skill to their practice.
The course is suitable for established practitioners who wish to extend their technical knowledge, as well as students with no prior experience. Beginners will gain a strong foundation in oil painting.

Students will learn a wide range of traditional systems that will expand their
understanding of the craft of painting, and bring about a more informed attitude towards the subtle aspects of working with oil paint. As well as gaining an understanding of these traditional systems, students are introduced to the properties and characteristics of pigments, mediums and supports, encouraging students to familiarize themselves with archival practices. Subjects include the figure, still life, portraiture and landscape, seen technically through particular painters in western history. Whilst it is often the case during the course that the subject is set, the range of techniques and effects covered can be adapted to figurative or non-figurative painting. The pursuit of an individual language is encouraged and fostered in and out of class, and students are expected to develop
their own responses to the information presented during the year.

The year is divided into 4 terms, which roughly follow the school year. New students are required to attend on a Friday from 9.30 – 2pm with a short lunch break. Class size is limited to 12. Students need to make a commitment to attend the full programme, as the course has been designed in stages to allow maximum attention to each area of study.
If students wish to continue studying after the first year, as has been the case to date, there is a mixture of self – generated and set projects. Various artists from the Impressionists, the 20th century, and our current time are covered. The use of contemporary materials is also discussed and investigated in the second year of study.

The studio for the classes is situated in Annandale. Applicants should contact Celia Gullett to enquire about costs and equipment. There is a recommended materials
list, which will provide students with a preferred palette, mediums and brushes. etc. Classes for new students are on Fridays and continuing students on Thursdays.
COURSE OUTLINE

Term 1 :  UNDERSTANDING MATERIALS AND TONE.
• understanding tone and learning traditional methods used in
underpainting systems
• overpainting in opaques and glazes.

Term 4 : SELF GENERATED PROJECT
This term will be spent producing a body of work based on the student’s choice of subject. This is an opportunity for all students to put into practice a more individual approach to painting using the skills attained throughout the year, applying the new repertoire to a more personal subject.

ABOUT CELIA GULLETT
Before founding the painting school at Annandale in 2005, Celia Gullett studied at East Sydney Technical college ( now NAS ), and completed a degree in Fine Arts at City Art Institute, ( now COFA ) in 1982. Returning to teach at both institutions, she has also run many specialized short courses and workshops in Sydney and rural NSW. After completing her studies at City Art Institute and East Sydney Tech, she studied with Charlie Sheard for three years, and assisted him for a year at his studio school in
2000. Celia Gullett has exhibited with the Tim Olsen Gallery since 2002.

Strange Enlightenments: Flann O’ Brien and Modernism
Friday, November 11 · 9:00am – 12:00pm

Strange Enlightenments:
Flann O’ Brien and Modernism

Conference
11 November 2011
The University of New South Wales
Sydney, Australia

Flann O’Brien’s work resists easy categorisation. He has often been held as a
‘post-modern’ novelist, whose ludic and parodic fictions played creative havoc
with traditional notions of authority and authorship. However in recent years
the category of post-modernism has been in decline, supplanted by the rise of
the ‘New Modernism’. This has unleashed a radical rethinking of how we define
and ‘periodise’ the modern. Organised jointly by the John Hume Institute for
Global Irish Studies and the Centre for Modernism Studies Australia at UNSW,
this conference uses the occasion of Flann O’Brien’s centenary to reanalyse
his major works in response to these developments.

Call for papers
Papers are invited on the broad theme of Flann O’Brien and ‘Modernism’.
Topics may include (but are not limited to):

- Flann O’Brien’s legacy at 100
- O’Brien’s relationship with modernist writers
- Irish cultural politics
- Literary form, genre, or style
- Comedy, humour, satire and parody
- O’Brien and science
- The Irish language
- Translation and adaptation
- Myles na Gopaleen and journalism
- O’Brien and Irish studies
- O’Brien and modern philosophy
- O’Brien and modern media

Abstracts should be submitted by email. Abstract submissions should
include the paper title, and be no more than 250
words. Please include a brief biography and contact details of the presenting author.

The deadline for submissions is 16 September 2011 at 5pm.
* Please note that authors of successful submissions will
have 20 minutes to present their paper

Dear artists,
ESP Gallery is planning its program for 2012 and is looking for solo or group proposals.
If an artist does not wish to hire the whole gallery, we suggest you plan a group show
with friends, which will reduce your costs and maximise your audience.

We have a centrally located gallery in Marrickville, with 4 rooms and hallway available
for individual or group hire. Professional hanging system is installed.
Plinths and multi media equipment available.

ESP Gallery is an artist run initiative supported by Marrickville Council.
Our costs are low as all team members are volunteers, giving their time freely
for the love of art. Exhibiiting artists are asked to contribute at least 50%
of operating time as volunteers so that ESP can continue to offer its services
to the artists of Sydney.

Opening hours Thurs/Fri 3-6pm, Sat/Sun 11am-4pm.
Please send proposals with 3- 5 jpegs per artist  to: espgallery@gmail.com

The Waverley Postcard Project
2010 Waverley Artist in Residence Maz Dixon examines how our relationship with the landscape is
mediated by mass-produced tourism such as maps, postcards and cheap souvieners. Dixon has
produced a series of postcard paintings in response to the landscape of Waverley highlighting
some of the lesser known spots of beauty and fame in the area. These postcards are free and
available through out local  businesses across Waverley from June through to August 2011.

For 2011 Council has endorsed the artists Emma Anna, Kate Mitchell, TV Moore, Todd Fuller,
Joanne Mulcahy-Zubani and Sue Saxon as Artists in Residence. Funding has been received from
Arts NSW for development of the visual arts industry in Waverley. We encourage community members

THINGS OF INTEREST
———————————————————–
Kudos Gallery – Paddington
If you’d like to support The Free Market project,
here are a few things you can do which would be really helpful to me:

Save up plastic bags from your house (regular supermarket plastic bags)
and bring them into Kudos Gallery.

If you work or have any friends in hospitality or retail, and can you
ask them to ask their boss if they can pass on surplus food/stock that
will otherwise get thrown out? I can arrange pick up if necessary.

If you have any junk that could go to a good home, let us know.
Some of the things that people have donated so far are books,
CDs, DVDs, old appliances, old furniture, clothes, kitchen stuff.

Email l.harris@arc.unsw.edu.au if you’d like to help out!

MEDIA RELEASE – 4 May 2011 – BOOHOO FILMS – SHORT FILM COMPETITION 2011
BooHoo’s vision is to promote emerging local independent filmmakers and artists. We
do something different to other film festivals and events by providing regular film
screenings and performance opportunities.

In doing so BooHoo films have become an integral link in Sydney’s contemporary
filmmaking community as members gather and participate in our yearly programs.
Since 2006 we have been organising monthly screening events in the Inner City, and
have screened over 150 locally produced films and given performers opportunities.

In 2011 BooHoo films is back again, and commencing in May we are holding monthly
competitions culminating in our August grand final where the BooHoo filmmaker of the
year will be awarded. Audience popularity determines the finalists and industry panels
determine the overall winner, with cash and prizes to win along the way.

We are also excited to announce our new screening venue and partnership with Queen
Street Studio. QSS is an award winning member-based, non-profit Incorporated
organisation which provides subsidised studio space – all run by artists for artists.

Get involved and enter your film now or come along to a screening and support the local

Wednesday, May 18 · 1:00pm – 2:00pm
@ Foyer – Fisher Library – University Of Sydney

Come disturb the dust on “old” books at Fisher library!

The University of Sydney has announced they are discarding half a million
books in a move to downsize library and make room for a new cafe.
The University is proposing that items which have not been borrowed
in the last 5 years be discarded. Our strategy is to borrow as many
“old” books as possible at lunchtime on Wednesday, to highlight the
ridiculous notion that books have… an expiry date. We want to send
a message USYD administration that the library’s valuable collection
should not be discarded, and certainly not to make way for an internal
coffee shop (see the article below)!

Since the University has claimed they can do a “dust test” to determine
if a book is worth keeping or not, we want to unsettle the dust on as
many books as possible. We also plan to protest the University
Administration’s decision to downsize the library by cutting 30 staff positions.

Come disturb the dust and save the books!.
Mass Book Borrowing Bonanza & READ IN
Fisher Library Foyer
1pm Wednesday 18th May 2011.

The more USYD library card holders (without borrow-blocking fines)
at the action, the better.
