Summer Residency – Yarra Sculpture Gallery
After the great success of the 2012 Winter Residency program, the Contemporary Sculptors Association is inviting applications from emerging and established artists for a 6 week Summer Residency at the Yarra Sculpture Gallery.
They are offering the opportunity for artists to experiment and expand their practice, a time to take chances and explore possibilities. They are looking, ideally, for artists who would like to have the opportunity to create installation or large scale sculptural works within the gallery space.
Up to five artists will be selected and allocated one of the gallery spaces in which to work. Artists will have 24 hour non residential access to the space. An Open Studio will be held on the last weekend of the residency, where the artists can present any finished work or discuss work in progress with other artists and the public.
Details of the gallery space can be found on the website – http://www.yarrasculpturegallery.com.au/summer-residency.html
Please rank your preferences for spaces, if you have them, in your application. They will endeavor to accommodate your choices but cannot make any guarantees.
Applicants will need to provide a CV, 5 images of current or relevant work (1MB max each image) and a 250 word proposal for the residency. Successful applicants would be required to join the CSA if not already members.
Applications can be emailed to yarrasculpturegallery@gmail.com or sent via post to:

TWILIGHT CHRISTMAS MARKET
The Gallery is getting festive this year and hosting a Twilight Christmas Market on Sunday 2 December from 3pm-7pm. The stalls will be selling unique artisan gifts, cards, food delights, home wares, plants, clothing, and much more.
Take a little of Lewers home with you…..
As a special initiative, and following in the tradition of artist Margo Lewers, who used her artistry to create cards and gifts for friends and family, the Gallery has produced for sale plants propagated from our Heritage Garden and a series of Christmas cards inspired by Margo’s collaged works.
So, forget the stressful Christmas shopping experience and bring the family down to the Gallery for a fun afternoon. In addition to the market stalls visitors will be able to listen to artist talks in the Gallery spaces, music in the heritage gardens, enjoy a tasty BBQ sausage sandwich and Cafe at Lewers will be serving festive beverages for the whole family to enjoy. Don’t miss the opportunity to find a special hand crafted gift as well as the ability to meet the maker. The Twilight Market day will be an enjoyable event for all ages.

Copyright Agency|Viscopy is a not for profit rights management organisation. We enable the use of text and images in return for fair payment to writers, visual artists and publishers. This includes managing the Viscopy business which delivers licensing services to artists and users of images.
2) What is the Resale Royalty?
The artists’ resale royalty scheme is relatively new legislation that sees artists receiving royalties on certain resales of their work. Since the start of the scheme on 9 June 2010 it has generated royalties totalling more than $870,000 from more than 4,500 resales, attributed to more than 440 artists
(over 60% of these are indigenous artists). While some royalties have been paid to the families of deceased artists, the majority have been paid to living artists – in fact, the youngest artist to receive a royalty was 21 years old.
A royalty is payable if:
• the seller purchased the work after 8 June 2010;
• the work resells for $1,000 or more (including GST);
• the resale was not a private sale from one individual to another;
• the artist is an Australian citizen or resident;
If the artist has died:
• it was less than 70 years ago; and
• there is a beneficiary or estate with a connection to Australia.
3) Who are you and what is your role?
My name is Tristan Chant and I’m the Visual Artist Manager at Copyright Agency|Viscopy. My role was developed to enhance services to our visual artist members and assist with the implementation of the resale royalty scheme. I am also the membership manager for Viscopy andthe transactional licensing schemes.
4) How are you different to other companies?
We offer centralised licensing services for visual artists – we can be a ‘one stop’ source of licences to enable others to use an artist’s work with their permission and in exchange for a fair payment for that use. We’re also not for profit which means that we only deduct our administration fees from the royalties and fees earned by our members, to cover the services we provide.
5) How do you think artists see royalties?
I think artists see royalties as a positive addition to their income from creating art.
6) How does an artist get royalties?
There are a number of ways artists can receive royalties. If you are a member of Viscopy, we act as your worldwide agent and licence your works on your behalf. This includes use in publications, catalogues, merchandise and online reproductions. Another way to receive royalties is through the statutory licences. Copyright Agency manages the Commonwealth Government’s statutory licences; these statutory licenses provide schools and government access to use content without needing individual copyright clearances and also provide fair payment to the rightsholders for those uses.
For Viscopy members, we can also collect statutory licence income from Screenrights for images that have been used in television broadcasts. We also have agreements in place with similar organisations around the world that enable the use of foreign text and images in Australia, and the collection of fees and royalties for the use of Australian works overseas. And finally, there’s potential royalty income through the artists’ resale royalty scheme which I’ve spoken about above.
7) When does an artist qualify to receive royalties?
There are a number of ways an artist’s work can attract royalties. Firstly – by having an eligible resale of your work through the artists’ resale royalty scheme.
Royalties and licence fees can also come about from transactional by Viscopy. Finally, if your work is picked up in a sample survey from our statutory licences.
8) Are there any limitations to receiving royalties for your work?
For the resale royalty scheme it is 5% of the sale price (less admin and GST costs) for works that meet the eligibility criteria. For statutory and transactional licensing it is based on the type and volume of usage and how your works been used – for educational purposes, for government or commercial use and suchlike.
9) Is signing up something we need to do now or in the future?
I would recommend all artists consider signing up to Copyright Agency|Viscopy and register for resale royalty payments. Membership is free and while there may not be an immediate payment for you this will help to streamline payments in the future. Membership of Viscopy will allow us to include your work in our repertoire so it can be licensed. We are also a great contact and referral point for industry related enquiries.
10) How does an artist register?
Registration for the resale royalty scheme can be found at http://www.resaleroyalty.org.au. For membership to Copyright Agency|Viscopy artists can head over http://www.viscopy.org.au. Both sites have online forms or downloadable PDF versions, they only take a few minutes to complete online.
11) What have you found out about artists when dealing with them?
Artists are a great group of professionals to work with, they are always eager to learn about developments that affect their industry and passionate about what they do for a living. It been great to see artists start to realise the value in their works beyond primary sales.
12) What funds do you run for artists and art professionals?
We run a fund called the Copyright Agency Cultural Fund, which has two main areas of focus. Firstly, we have the Major Cultural Projects Fund. The priority for this fund is to support innovation in the Australian creative industries and to develop local and foreign markets for Australian works. Recent recipients of funding have included NAVA, Arts Law, Biennale of Sydney and 4A Gallery. A full list of projects funded is available here.
Secondly, we have the Creative Industries Career Fund. This fund supports individual Australian creators and those involved in the creative industries who wish to develop their skills and take their careers to the next level. Applicants can apply for grants of up to $5,000 to undertake training and other activities that will enhance their careers. Projects supported by the fund can be found here, and it’s a great indication of the diverse range of projects Australian creators are participating in. More information about the Copyright Agency Cultural Fund is available here.
13) What art do you have in the office?
We lease most of our works from Artbank. My favourite would have to be the Ginger Riley (Ngak Ngak) in the board room.
Have a good one, contact us on sydneygalleries@gmail.com

Conductors Project
Sydney’s newest public art initiative is launching on 21.09.12.
Utilising two display cabinets between the platforms at St. James Station
and a third at Museum Station, the Conductors Project pulls artists out of
the gallery and into the public forum.
We’re proud to announce Phil James’ Smilex:Redux as our first project.
Wit, irony and irreverence are something sadly lacking from the daily commute.
Thankfully, Phil’s work has those things in spades and with two solo shows
already under his belt this year, Phil James is set to continue turning heads.
Future programming will feature Remnim Alexander Tayco,
Justin Balmain and Zap with more to be announced soon.
Committed to exhibiting the work of emerging and
established artists, Conductors Project endeavours to connect
artists to new audiences and enrich the lives of Sydney’s commuters.

DEFIANCE SCULPTURE PARK AT THE GATE GALLERY 2480 WOLLOMBI RD, WOLLOMBI NSW 2325
Campbell Robertson-Swann and Lauren Harvey of Defiance Gallery and Willem
and Caroline Van Zanten of The Gate Gallery are excited to announce the
launch of ‘Defiance Sculpture Park at The Gate Gallery’ in Wollombi Valley, NSW.
Defiance Gallery and The Gate Gallery have joined forces to realise their shared
vision of establishing a permanent sculpture park of national significance
to celebrate the wealth of talent in Australian sculpture.
Forty outdoor works by prominent and emerging Australian and International
sculptors will be placed throughout twenty acres of beautiful gardens
surrounding The Gate Gallery, making this sculpture park the first of it’s kind
in Australia. Visitors and collectors can enjoy the works all year round throughout
the changing landscape of the seasons. All works are for sale.
Wollombi is a beautiful and historic country town 1.45 hours drive north of
Sydney en route to the Hunter Valley. There are great restaurants, local shops,
vineyards and B&B’s nearby just a short drive from The Hunter Valley, making
it ideal for an enjoyable day trip or a weekend away in the country.
In addition, Defiance will curate four indoor exhibitions annually at the
gallery. These shows will feature smaller works by the exhibiting sculptors and a
selection of paintings and drawings by well known Australian artists.
Artists include Robert Klippel (courtesy of a private collection), Phillip King
(courtesy of Defiance Gallery), Bronwyn Oliver (courtesy of a private collection),
Jan King (courtesy of King Street Gallery on William), Paul Selwood (courtesy of Watters Gallery),
Steven King (courtesy of the artist), Paul Hopmeier (courtesy of Defiance Gallery), Ian Mackay (courtesy of
Defiance Gallery), Kevin Norton (courtesy of Defiance Gallery) and many more!
Defiance Sculpture Park at The Gate Gallery is pleased to announce our
partnership with Noyce Brothers Wines (Phillip, Michael and Peter Noyce), a leading winemaker in the Wollombi Valley
with a great cellar door in the centre of town. Visitors to sculpture park and
gallery will be offered wine tasting of Noyce Brothers Wines.
All exhibition openings at Defiance Gallery, Sydney and The Gate Gallery,
Wollombi are sponsored by Noyce Brothers Wines.
Open Studio @ Artspace – Alex Kershaw, 24 & 25 August
In his Open Studio @ Artspace, Friday 24 and Saturday 25 August 11am-5pm, Kershaw will present work in progress
from two current video projects. The first filmed in collaboration with Ikebana sensei’s while in residence at
Tokyo Wonder Site in 2011. The second, made with animal hunters in New York State, during his residency at the
International Studio and Curatorial Program in 2012.
Kershaw uses video and photography to mediate intercultural exchange with people and communities from a specific place.
In this process, everyday people become participants and collaborators in the production of the work.
The artist is undertaking his Artspace Studio Residency before he departs Australia to begin a Ph.D.
at the University of California, San Diego.

Brenda May Gallery is currently accepting proposals from professional practising artists in Australia
and New Zealand for the following group exhibitions scheduled for 2013.
‘Sculpture 2013′ – Jan/Feb 2013
Scheduled for January, this show continues the tradition of opening our year with an exhibition devoted
to the best and most interesting contemporary sculpture. Although there are no restrictions for this exhibition,
we will only consider work made by professional sculptors which has not previously been exhibited in Sydney.
Proposals for this show must be received by Friday 19 October 2012.
Artwork to be delivered to the Gallery on Monday 21 January 2013.
‘Paper Works II’ – April/May 2013
We already exhibit a number of artists who work with paper in extraordinary ways – as such this show is about
the nature of paper itself and we will consider any work produced on paper, with paper or about paper.
Proposals for this show must be received by Friday 2 February 2013.
Artwork to be delivered to the Gallery by Friday 12 April 2013.
‘Small’ co-curated by Olivia Welch – July 2013
Being small is often defined in the negative sense – not big, not usual, not imporant. For this show
we have asked artists who are familiar with working on a small-scale to contribute works that defy this notion.
In addition to those who are more comfortable working on a larger scale have been challenged to produce
something which fits this category but is not in any way a diminutive correlate of their larger works.
Proposals for this show must be received by Friday 26 April 2013.
Artwork to be delivered to the Gallery by Friday 5 July 2013.
Submissions should be posted directly to the Gallery (email submissions and proposals sent by registered
post will not be accepted) and should include a CD of recent work and images in support of the proposal,
an up to date C/V and a single page outline stating which exhibition you are submitting for and the nature
of the work you are proposing. Please no powerpoint or keynote files.

Emerging curator needed for collaboration with UK artists
PsychoanalYSL is a research-led artist collective based in London whose work often interrogates the political
economy of art in the era of globalisation. They have most recently exhibited at the V22 Collection (UK),
Banner Repeater (UK) and the Sichuan Art Institute (China). With major exhibitions commissioned by the UK Arts Council
and the British Council, their work has featured in Art Monthly, Art Review and many other international publications.
PsychoanalYSL are looking for a Melbourne-based curator t
o assist them in the making of new work for an upcoming exhibition called TV Dinners, which will be held at Bus Projects,
Melbourne from 28th of August until the 15th of September, and which will feature the work of some of Britain’s
hottest young artists and art collectives including Lucky PDF and Eddie Peake, as well as Sydney-based duo Soda Jerk.
PsychoanalYSL wish to secede their art space within the show to be used as media space. On their behalf,
their curatorial co-conspirator will sell to brands operating in Australia the opportunity to advertise on the artists’
screens in the exhibition. Just as they would if working in media sales, the curator will receive a commission from psychoanalYSL
(in this case 20% of the value of the media that they sell).
PsychoanalYSL will work with the curator (by email and/or Skype) to guide their endeavours.
The curator wil be expected to put in up to approximately four days’ of work in total for the next four weeks, spread over the course of those weeks.
The collective are more interested in the process of working with their collaborator to execute
this proposition than they are in the results achieved, so success and failure are both acceptable in this work.
But a bright emerging curator with the charm, confidence and intelligence to represent this work to strangers is crucial.
An example wall label would be:

Advertising space sold to Absolut
Video loop on three plasma screens
2012
The role and name of the curator will be referred to in the written material which will be available in the gallery space throughout the exhibition.
To express an interest in working on this exhibition, or for further information, please contact the show’s curator, Alana Kushnir on alana.kushnir@me.com

The Museum of Contemporary Art Australia opened its doors in March to great public acclaim as a bold new museum for contemporary art and creative learning. With new galleries, enhanced facilities for the public and dedicated facilities for our education programs, the possibilities that the new MCA offers are almost endless. The expanded facilities provide us with the opportunity to meet the increasing interest in contemporary art and the ever growing demand for our programs. With the building complete, it’s now time to focus back on the art and delivering our ground breaking programs.
Occupying 40% of the new wing, the National Centre for Creative Learning is a dynamic and innovative space for learning. The centre is equipped with state-of-the art technology and holds digital and multimedia studios, two practical creative studios, a lecture theatre, seminar room and library. It also houses the Bella Room, a multi-sensory learning and exhibition space for the MCA’s Bella program.
The Bella Program offers workshops to young people who have little or no access to museums and cultural institutions. These children may be experiencing physical, intellectual, emotional or behavioural disabilities, or are disadvantaged due to their financial, social or geographic situation.
The MCA is dedicated to creating accessibility to contemporary art for all and the Bella Program is a vital part of this mission. The Bella workshops were initiated by patrons Cynthia Jackson AM and the late Dr Edward Jackson AM in 1993 and the new facilities give the MCA the opportunity to run this program year round. However, more workshops mean we need to raise more money to fund the program.
Our Annual Appeal this year is therefore focused on the Bella Program – to provide free workshops throughout the year to these very special young people.
Donating to the MCA Annual Appeal is easy and all donations are tax deductible, just click on the link https://app.etapestry.com/bbphosted/nl_mca/OnlineDonation.html. If you have any questions about supporting the MCA please call Lisa Hamilton, Philanthropy Manager on 02 9245 2414 or email development@mca.com.au. I hope you can support this incredible program. With best wishes,
Elizabeth Ann Macgregor OBE Director

OF LIGHT – Call for Artists! CALL FOR EXHIBITION PROPOSALS: (invite your artistic friends & lovers to the event!)
YOLK Collective invites emerging artists of a range of mediums to submit proposals for our group exhibition ‘OF LIGHT’ before June 6th 2012.
The General Public, particularly tertiary students and graduates, are encouraged to apply. Collaborative projects are also welcomed. Unfettered by medium, we are open to artists working within a variety of disciplines, traditional to experimental.
Exhibition details: ‘OF LIGHT’ will be the debut exhibition curated and mediated by the newly formed YOLK Collective. It is an exhibition centered on manipulations of light, luminosity and electricity. This is a broad theme encompassing works that conceptualise notions of light, and explore visual elements of contrast and chiaroscuro, while also encompassing works using lights or mediums of a luminescent nature.
To accompany the exhibition YOLK Collective will provide an extensive catalogue/magazine at the expense of the Collective to highlight the artists exhibited and other written components we have created. This will be freely distributed around Sydney.
The exhibition will be held at ‘The Barn’ in Mosman at the cost of the Collective over the duration of three days (13-15 July 2012). We are limited to the space and hanging devices at the location. There will be an opening event that will also be the launch of the Collective.
Who are YOLK Collective?
YOLK Collective is a not-for-profit collective comprised of three Art Theory students from COFA.
YOLK Collective’s objective is to create opportunities and editorial for emerging artists.
We also write artist profiles, exhibition reviews, quirky articles, essays, and some of our
projects include small focus exhibitions and events.
- Our written content is also published on our blog: http://yolkcollective.blogspot.com.au/ & supplementary materials on our twitter, facebook, pinterest and instagram. To enquire about proposals/curatorial theme, please contact YOLK Collective at yolkcollective@gmail.com

$10,000 & A TRIP TO THE UK TO BE AWARDED TO
UP-AND-COMING AUSTRALIAN CREATIVES
- Applications open for the British Council’s 2012 Realise Your Dream awards-
Celebrating 10 years of nurturing Australian creative talent, the British Council’s Realise Your Dream
awards are now bigger and better than ever.
This year, three lucky winners will be awarded a $10,000 cash prize and a return trip to the UK, where
they will be given the chance to meet their creative heroes and to experience all the cultural richness
the UK has to offer.
Realise Your Dream is a unique opportunity for people working within the first 10 years of their career,
in any creative industry – from theatre to publishing, visual art to music, digital media to industrial
design, etc.
Unlike many awards aimed at Australian artistic practitioners, Realise Your Dream allows its winners
to choose their own direction once they get to the UK, whether it’s getting behind the scenes at the
Edinburgh Festival, hanging about the studio observing a prominent artist at work, attending meetings
at major arts organisations. The British Council will draw on its wide network of contacts to help
winners realise their ‘dreams’.
British Council Director Nick Marchand says:
“Approaching the 10 anniversary of Realise Your Dream, we want to celebrate the creative careers
of the 50 young Australians that have used this prize to create incredible opportunities in the UK, over
the last decade. We’re starting the festivities by offering the most significant prize to date, making
sure that this year’s winners have the best possible start to their journey!”
Realise Your Dream entries open Monday 23 April 2012.
Realise Your Dream is a British Council initiative, in association with Virgin Atlantic, BBC Knowledge,
triple j, NIX Co, Boccalatte and Show Group.

Kaleidoscope Gallery Life Drawing classes
‘Works on Paper’
life drawing class
6 x 2 hour classes
commencing Tuesday 24th April, 2012
Drawing instructor Olivia Burge (Fine Art Hons. NAS) & Kaleidoscope Gallery are pleased to present our 2012 life drawing class, Works on Paper.
Each fortnight a two-hour class will be held at Kaleidoscope Gallery with the aim of exploring and experimenting in line-making with the human figure.
The translation of the three-dimensional model on to a flat plane lies at the heart of drawing and has challenged artists since pre-presective.
In these six classes, we explore the idea of drawing as an abstract activity; through the analysis of line, proportion, weight, scale, tone, depth and light.
Throughout the course we investigate these visual values and their relationship to the human figure with a range of traditional materials (charcoal, graphite, ink) and papers.
Cost: $200. This includes six weeks tuition, life drawing models, a glass of wine & drawing instructor. KG will also include a variety of paper, charcoal, inks and drawing materials to experiment with on paper.
All skill levels are welcome and we encourage students who are interested in using alternative materials to contact Kaleidoscope Gallery prior to class.
Works on Paper drawing class commences Tuesday the 24th April, from 6-8pm, followed by every Second Tuesday for the duration of the course.
