UpRaw: Great Art Unearthed
Gain access to raw, unadulterated talent from the world’s best emerging artists
Be the first to own artwork by emerging artists from around the world at the launch of UpRaw, an online platform
for early career artists. Art lovers and collectors will be able to access unique art pieces without the exorbitant
price-tag through UpRaw’s website dedicated to connecting raw creative talent with art enthusiasts.

Part of Sydney-based art investment company Art Equity, UpRaw is pushing the boundaries of showcasing and
selling art. CEO Raj Nanda marvels that just 10 years ago selling online was in its infancy and online galleries
were rare.

Now it’s a valuable platform for emerging and established artists to expose their work to the global art world. “As
pioneers in the business of selling art online we see UpRaw as a natural development, with the website’s easy to
navigate functionality and shopping cart facilities,” he explains.

“UpRaw is an affordable entry to art collecting. We make a point of offering original artworks that are accessible to
all art enthusiasts, with prices starting at under AU$200 and nothing priced over AU$2,000. We also provide free
shipping within Australia and New Zealand,” he adds.

Ralph Hobbs, Art Director and an artist represented by UpRaw notes being able to showcase and sell high quality
artworks online is an opportunity to broaden artists’ reach and expose their work to a wider audience that “may
be intimidated by the gallery scene or not necessarily have time to go to openings”.

“The reality is that the internet is a global market place and at UpRaw there is a serious understanding of the way
art and the internet work together. It has exposed my art to a far greater audience than I would normally be able
to create,” adds Hobbs.

“UpRaw looks after all the issues associated with selling work, so I can get on and do it. So far as UpRaw is
concerned I can produce the work and watch it sell to people I will probably never know. As an artist, that is a
great feeling.”

“Over the 9 years of building Art Equity, we’ve been exposed to hundreds of talented early career artists. We’ve
kept our eye on them, mentored many of them and are now thrilled to be able to represent them through UpRaw.”

Currently, almost 20 Australian and international artists are represented by UpRaw. Mediums range from
traditional oil paintings, photography, drawings and original prints to stencil art.

Artists have been carefully selected through a number of criteria; Hobbs says they are required to go above and
beyond “decorative work to maintain technical and conceptual substance.” The combined experience of the staff
at Art Equity and UpRaw are just as valuable to buyers.

Emma Crott, Coordinator of UpRaw, says “we are committed to not only providing an online exhibition space but
curating various art initiatives and pop-up shows in Australia and beyond so customers can experience the works
in a physical environment.”
“We are always seeking new and exciting ways to showcase our artists’ work, for example we regularly exhibit at
EMI Music on Flinders Street (Sydney) as part of their Art Project. Collaborations with the music, fashion and food
industries allow us to promote our artists to a broad range of people and create a dialogue with other cultural
entities.”

CALL OUT FOR DIRECTORS
The Red Rattler Theatre
LOOKING FOR DIRECTORS FOR THE RED RATTLER THEATRE INC!

Do you want to be involved in the community management of The Red Rattler Theatre?

The Red Rattler Theatre is now looking for new directors to join a dedicated and enthusiastic team to run one of Sydney’s newest and most innovative venues.

What skills do I need to be a director?
Directors must be able to attend two meetings each month, and participate in ad hoc projects.

The Red Rattler is looking for a combination of people to make up a board with the following skills and experiences (you don’t need to hold all the skills listed below):
• Experience on a board or governance committee
• Experience in management of an artist-run-initiative or non-profit community organisation
• Organisational and communication skills
• Legal skills
• Experience and interest in fundraising – whether through grants, sponsorship or other funding ideas
• Media, publicity and PR skills
• Website and email-list management skills
• Administration and financial management experience
• A commitment to planning for the long-term viability of this non-profit venue
• A commitment to implementation of The Red Rattler eco-sustainability plan
• A commitment to The Red Rattler Policy
• A passion for arts and politics

How to apply
Please email The Red Rattler collective@redrattler.org by 1st February 2013 outlining your interest in this exciting role:
• a cover letter explaining what skills you can contribute (1 page maximum)
• your curriculum vitae and short biography (1 page maximum)

What is the Red Rattler Theatre Inc, and what are the Red Rattler’s future plans?
The Red Rattler is the realisation of the collective dream of five local queer woman artists, who wanted to create a legal warehouse-style venue to showcase alternative Sydney arts, performance and grassroots activism. It has been an active artist run initiative for 4 years, running as an indie, not-for-profit, volunteer run, fully licensed warehouse space. It also includes two artist studios. The Red Rattler Theatre Inc has become a creative playground for performers, musicians, artists, designers, new media makers, experimentalists, film-makers, theorists, activists, writers, collective organisers, and local punters.

The Red Rattler has recently moved from a collective partnership governing model to a not-for-profit incorporated arts association. The new board will be involved in the development and planning of the 2013-2014 creative program, the establishment of the Red Rattler as an entity with deductible gift recipient status, and more exciting projects!

Broadside Zine ISSUE#5 Artist Callout
It’s that time again… people are hassling us about “when is the next issue coming out?” which means we have to start actually working on it, bummer. I mean woo! WOOOO!

We need stuff to put in it, which is where you come in!

For anyone who’s late to the Broadside party, or you woke up in our editor’s house missing a kidney and are trying to make yourself useful so she’ll give it back… ART! ROCK AND ROLL! BLACK AND WHITE! Other buzzwords! Past issues here:

ISSUE#4: http://www.broadsidezine.tumblr.com/post/31856564224/
ISSUE#3: http://www.broadsidezine.tumblr.com/post/27244711970/
ISSUE#2: http://www.broadsidezine.tumblr.com/post/22892378952/
ISSUE#1: http://www.broadsidezine.tumblr.com/post/22581772277/

Give us your…
VISUAL ART – Sends us BLACK AND WHITE, reasonably high resolution drawings, photography, paintings, things done by computer witchcraft, whatever. If it’s interesting or “WAY RADCORE!!” we will probably like it and you’re on your way to living in a cred-front apartment on a sea of cred.
As always, boobies are welcome.
WORDS – Send us poetry, musings on the kids today, gardening tips… as long as it’s the kind of thing you’d be interested in reading. Absolute limit of 1 A4 page or we start getting creative with editing and you’ll find out you actually submitted an article on how much you suck and can’t follow length guidelines.
OTHER SHIT – We’re always posting miscellaneous stuff on our blog, so if you want us to promote music or videos or other shit it’s physically impossible to print, come chat us up on signalsfromthefrontier@gmail.com. We write bitchin’ reviews, so feel free to invite us to stuff, particularly if there’s alcohol involved.

Kaldor Public Art Projects
PROJECT #26 OPENS IN MELBOURNE
After months of preparation, we are excited to be approaching the opening of Project #26: Allora & Calzadilla’s Stop, Repair, Prepare at the State Library of Victoria. Allora & Calzadilla are two of the most significant artists of our time and their work Stop, Repair, Prepare: Variations on ‘Ode to Joy’ for a Prepared Piano integrates sound, performance and sculpture to create a captivating new experience for audiences.
For Stop, Repair, Prepare, the artists have cut a large hole from the centre of a Bechstein grand piano and made adjustments to the pedals, to allow the pianist to enter the piano and play it from within, wheeling it across the floor as they walk. A meditation on art, idealism and power, Stop, Repair, Prepare has been presented to great acclaim at the Museum of Modern Art in New York and was described by the New York Times as a ‘fully-fledged, crowd-pleasing masterpiece.’
From 16 November – 6 December
Cowen Gallery, State Library of Victoria
Performances on the hour: Monday to Thursday 11am-8pm, Friday to Sunday 11am – 5pm.

In Gallery with Mosman Art Gallery

3 11 2012

1) What is the History of Mosman Art Gallery?

Mosman Art Gallery was launched in 1999. It was built as part of an adaptive reuse of a significant heritage site heritage (the original building was designed by the architects Burcham Clamp and Walter Burley Griffin.

2) What is your galleries philosophy?

We aim to be the home of Australian Art and innovation, reflecting the great artistic heritage of the area and as an active participant in future arts developments.

3) How do you choose shows for the Gallery?

There are five criteria or streams that we consider for our programming. A program does not need to match all streams but we use them to make sure we have a balanced program. These streams of programming are: 1. Contemporary multi art program, 2. Heritage/collection program, 3 Access program,
4 Aboriginal program and 5. Innovation/new technology program.

4) Is there a certain style of art that the gallery prefers?

No particular style, but work of high quality that deals with interesting subject matter is usually preferable

5) What educational activities do you have?

We have over 4,000 students participating in our education activities every year, with educational programs designed to reflect individual exhibitions as well as our permanent collection.

6)  If you can, what advise can you give to an artist looking for representation, what would it be?

Always produce high quality work and be unique.

7) It is a hard market out there, how are you finding it?

As a public gallery we are not dependant on selling works, although sales have been down in recent years during the Mosman Art Prize.

8) What kind of audience do you usually get visiting?

We have a range, but like most galleries the majority of visitors are women who are mostly older than the median age. Having said that our audiences are becoming more diverse with many younger people coming to specific programs.

9) Have you any advice when choosing a gallery to show in?

It’s a bit of a luxury to choose, but you should aim to work with galleries and/or curators who get what you do and value it.

10) There are plenty of ARI (Artist run initiatives) out there, What are you thoughts on these spaces?

These places are vital for the long term development of artists and in providing direct experience for the next generation of arts administrators.

11)     Social media is everywhere, do you use it and does it help the gallery?

We have only established a social media presence this year but it is growing rapidly.
It is easy to use and provides another low cost outlet for getting our message out.

12) How do you get people to visit your gallery?

A variety of ways – through invitation, gallery friends, word-of-mouth, publicity and advertising and repeat visitation.

13) What art do you have on your wall at home and your office?

Contemporary urban Aboriginal artwork.

14) Where can we find out more about your gallery?

A good place to start is our website – www.mosmanartgallery.org.au

15) What do artists need to know about the Mosman Art Prize?

That it is the most prestigious open painting prize in Australia with a first prize of $30,000. It is also the oldest municipal art prize in Australia, founded in 1947.  The inaugural winner was Margaret Olley. Many famous artists have won the prize and have used it as a springboard for their careers.

16) What shows are coming up over the next couple of months?

In December/January we have Megan Heyward with a joint gallery/locative media project called Notes for Walking, which will also be featured as part of the 2013 Sydney Festival. During this time the Australian Watercolour Institute will combine with the Taiwanese Watercolour Institure in a joint international exhibition. Also, visitors to the Gallery can experience the Balnaves Gift, a recent $1 million donation of works to the gallery featuring Mosman landscape by key Australian artists including Arthur Streton, Sydney Long, Conrad Martens and Margaret Preston.
