Solid Ground_Echoes_WebButton
Call for Proposals – Solid Ground II: Echoes
Solid Ground II: Echoes Curated by Tom Macphail*
13 – 30 June 2013
With a Federal election approaching, Solid Ground II: Echoes is an inquiry into the current debates pertaining to asylum seekers and refugees within Australia by bringing together a range of artists and writers, aiming to approach the subject by expressing a variety of viewpoints, observations and lived experiences.
The aim of the exhibition is to focus on the facts of the current issues whilst considering Australia’s immigration history, international context and the political rhetoric and media sensationalism that has marred the issues and demonized ‘boat people’. The ‘White Australian’ policy of earlier decades demonstrates that Australian’s fear of outsiders is nothing new, yet the current polarization of the voting public reveals issues of underlying xenophobia that we have yet to shake off.
At The Vanishing Point gallery, in association with OPEN Marrickville is calling for artists whose artworks/practices are engaged with the above subject and writers who are looking to be published with the show’s accompanying zine. All medium and contemporary visual arts practices are welcome to apply.
Propose up to 5 artworks per artist.
Proposals due 6pm Sunday 2 June.
For a proposal form http://www.atthevanishingpoint.com.au/web_images/2013_ProposalCalls/Solid%20Ground%20II%20Echoes%20Proposal%20FORM_WEB.pdf

The Fish Bowl - new project space call out
The Fish Bowl – new project space call out
As you may have heard the new Dean (Ross Harley) has given his offices on the ground floor of D-block to the student body as exhibition or project spaces.
These glass walled rooms look out on to the courtyard and are an amazing place to conduct performances, live art production, and exhibit installations.
This new space is called The Fish Bowl. It will be open to any student* who wishes to use it. One room is for a week-long exhibition of work/ experimental project, another is a casual space to trial installation possibilities of your work for a few hours.
All you need to do to gain access to these awesome new rooms is to send a proposal to the Courtyard Collective via the Arc Office at COFA. As long as you aren’t using anything problematic like a raging bonfire or litres of sulphuric acid, we’ll slot you in!
Contact us at cofa@arc.unsw.edu.au
*you must be an Arc member…it’s free!

WALLPEOPLE LOGO1 wallpeople_01
Wallpeople is a collaborative art event that happens in 45 cities around the world at the same time. A city wall will become a makeshift outdoor gallery, where all participants may exhibit their own works and collaborate to create an improvised open-air museum.
This year, Sydney joins the global network of creatives for the first time, and invites all city artists & creative enthusiasts alike to join us on the 1st of June in Newtown.
Created in Barcelona in 2009, Wallpeople invites people to create and be a part of a unique experiment in an urban space, thus making an ephemeral street artwork.
Wallpeople 2013 – MUSIC EDITION
The guiding theme for 2013 is MUSIC. We want everyone to express their unique relationship with music, no matter what genre or style. The participants have two possibilities:
1. Reinterpret a song in an artistic format of choice: illustration, photography, text, painting, collage, canvas…
2. Create any art work related to music in a general way: For example: a tribute to an artist, a concert, a musical moment of your life, your favourite style, musical origins…
HOW TO PARTICIPATE?
1.Everyone can participate. You just need to join the event on Facebook.
2.On 1st of June at 12:00pm, go to Camperdown Memorial Rest Park in Newtown with one or more of your works.
3.Works will be accepted in any format: drawing, painting, illustration, photography, collage, paste-up, comics, paper, cardboard, wood (light), fabric, crochet, prints, mixed compositions, plates, postcards, craft, origami, album covers, vinyl, painted cassettes, a post-it, etc.
4.Stick your work(s) on the wall with the rest of the works. If your inspiration is a particular song, you must indicate the name of the track and the artist.
5.Wallpeople team will have the necessary adhesives but we still ENCOURAGE YOU TO BRING YOUR OWN MOUNTING TAPE OR ADHESIVE TAPE if possible, to facilitate the process. You can also BYO art supplies as we encourage all participants to make live art creations.
6.Wallpeople team will mark the start and ending of the event (about 3-4 hours).
7.At the end of the exhibition, you can take your work back or swap it with another participant’s, thus turning the event into an artistic exchange. If you want, you can write down your contact information, in case who took your work wants to contact you.
✓ ACCEPTED FORMATS:
• Light works, which can be stuck up to the wall with adhesive tape.
• Any techniques or formats are permitted, provided that the work refers to a musical subject.
✗ WE DON’T ACCEPT:
• Works bigger than 1x1m.
• Works that could cause damage to the wall. Drilling the wall is prohibited.
• Works with offensive or discriminatory content.
When: 1st of June – 12PM
@ Camperdown Memorial Park (Lennox St entrance)

THINGS OF INTEREST + opportunities for artists
———————————————–

Summer Residency – Yarra Sculpture Gallery
After the great success of the 2012 Winter Residency program, the Contemporary Sculptors Association is inviting applications from emerging and established artists for a 6 week Summer Residency at the Yarra Sculpture Gallery.
They are offering the opportunity for artists to experiment and expand their practice, a time to take chances and explore possibilities. They are looking, ideally, for artists who would like to have the opportunity to create installation or large scale sculptural works within the gallery space.
Up to five artists will be selected and allocated one of the gallery spaces in which to work. Artists will have 24 hour non residential access to the space. An Open Studio will be held on the last weekend of the residency, where the artists can present any finished work or discuss work in progress with other artists and the public.
Details of the gallery space can be found on the website – http://www.yarrasculpturegallery.com.au/summer-residency.html
Please rank your preferences for spaces, if you have them, in your application. They will endeavor to accommodate your choices but cannot make any guarantees.
Applicants will need to provide a CV, 5 images of current or relevant work (1MB max each image) and a 250 word proposal for the residency. Successful applicants would be required to join the CSA if not already members.
Applications can be emailed to yarrasculpturegallery@gmail.com or sent via post to:
Summer Residency – Yarra Sculpture Gallery – 117 Vere Street, Abbotsford, VIC 3067

Residency Dates:
14th December 2012 – 5th February 2013
Open Studios Saturday 2nd & Sunday 3rd February
Application Due Date: 5pm Monday 26th November

Costs and commitments:
Successful applicants who are current CSA members are required to pay $150 to cover rent and bills.
Future members pay $210 Full / $180 concession – includes annual membership to the CSA.
A $100 bond is required from all participating artists. This will be returned at the end of the residency, providing that the space is returned to previous working order.
They don’t police commitment or working hours and understand that everyone has different working methods, but their expectations are that you would be using the space for a minimum of 15 hours per week and will be available for the open studios.

TWILIGHT CHRISTMAS MARKET
The Gallery is getting festive this year and hosting a Twilight Christmas Market on Sunday 2 December from 3pm-7pm.  The stalls will be selling unique artisan gifts, cards, food delights, home wares, plants, clothing, and much more.
Take a little of Lewers home with you…..
As a special initiative, and following in the tradition of artist Margo Lewers, who used her artistry to create cards and gifts for friends and family, the Gallery has produced for sale plants propagated from our Heritage Garden and a series of Christmas cards inspired by Margo’s collaged works.

So, forget the stressful Christmas shopping experience and bring the family down to the Gallery for a fun afternoon. In addition to the market stalls visitors will be able to listen to artist talks in the Gallery spaces, music in the heritage gardens, enjoy a tasty BBQ sausage sandwich and Cafe at Lewers will be serving festive beverages for the whole family to enjoy. Don’t miss the opportunity to find a special hand crafted gift as well as the ability to meet the maker. The Twilight Market day will be an enjoyable event for all ages.
Support you local artists, designers, crafters and retailers and knock off your Christmas shopping this year at the Gallery.
Don’t miss out, tell your friends to join us  – Entry to the Markets and the Gallery is FREE !

We need stuff to put in it, which is where you come in!

For anyone who’s late to the Broadside party, or you woke up in our editor’s house missing a kidney and are trying to make yourself useful so she’ll give it back… ART! ROCK AND ROLL! BLACK AND WHITE! Other buzzwords! Past issues here:

ISSUE#1: http://www.broadsidezine.tumblr.com/post/22581772277/

Give us your…
VISUAL ART – Sends us BLACK AND WHITE, reasonably high resolution drawings, photography, paintings, things done by computer witchcraft, whatever. If it’s interesting or “WAY RADCORE!!” we will probably like it and you’re on your way to living in a cred-front apartment on a sea of cred.
As always, boobies are welcome.
WORDS – Send us poetry, musings on the kids today, gardening tips… as long as it’s the kind of thing you’d be interested in reading. Absolute limit of 1 A4 page or we start getting creative with editing and you’ll find out you actually submitted an article on how much you suck and can’t follow length guidelines.
OTHER SHIT – We’re always posting miscellaneous stuff on our blog, so if you want us to promote music or videos or other shit it’s physically impossible to print, come chat us up on signalsfromthefrontier@gmail.com. Find out about our two new art projects in Melbourne and Sydney. Experience Allora & Calzadilla at the State Library of Victoria from 16 November and follow us for news on our most ambitious project to date!
Kaldor Public Art Projects
PROJECT #26 OPENS IN MELBOURNE
After months of preparation, we are excited to be approaching the opening of Project #26: Allora & Calzadilla’s Stop, Repair, Prepare at the State Library of Victoria. Allora & Calzadilla are two of the most significant artists of our time and their work Stop, Repair, Prepare: Variations on ‘Ode to Joy’ for a Prepared Piano integrates sound, performance and sculpture to create a captivating new experience for audiences.
For Stop, Repair, Prepare, the artists have cut a large hole from the centre of a Bechstein grand piano and made adjustments to the pedals, to allow the pianist to enter the piano and play it from within, wheeling it across the floor as they walk. A meditation on art, idealism and power, Stop, Repair, Prepare has been presented to great acclaim at the Museum of Modern Art in New York and was described by the New York Times as a ‘fully-fledged, crowd-pleasing masterpiece.’
From 16 November – 6 December
Cowen Gallery, State Library of Victoria
Performances on the hour: Monday to Thursday 11am-8pm, Friday to Sunday 11am – 5pm.

OPENINGS AND THE ARTS IN SYDNEY – 10/09/2012 – 16/09/2012

9 09 2012

This week’s ‘In Gallery’ is Mop project, the interview can been seen on our blog at:

http://www.sydneyartgalleriesandartcommunity.wordpress.com/2012/09/08/in-gallery-with-mop-projects/

On  a sad note, as many of you know Oxford Art Supplies has closed its doors. Oxford Art Supplies began its days in 1964 as a hardware store in the rundown inner city suburb of Darlinghurst. It  was run by Alf and Bessie Altshuler.  In 1974, the owner’s son, David Altshuler, decided to expand the product range to include hand=stretched canvases, artist and student quality paints, brushes and pencils. Since then, Oxford Art Supplies has been serving professional artists, art students, graphic designers, advertising agencies and the complete beginner. We are sad to see you gone.

Check out of listing of arts events as there are many to choose from, you can also subscribe to the blog and get the information straight to your inbox.

Take it easy and play safe.

Sydney set to come alive with Art this September!

Reflecting the diversity of art today, Sydney’s Art Expo is unlike any other visual art event.
The Expo brings together Australia’s most promising names in art, and a new wave of emerging
artists, all under one roof. Plus there are a host of other visual art activities at the Expo, all catering
for the continued growth and interest in art.

Visitors can look forward to discovering new artists, participating in hands-on workshops including
painting, sculpture and photography, as well as seeing artists bring a blank canvas to life in real
time. With artwork for sale at the event to suit every taste and budget, there is something for
everyone!

In addition to catering for established art lovers, Sydney’s Art Expo will also demystify art for the
uninitiated, with interactive exhibits and education programs featuring at the show. These range
from teaching basic art methods and more advanced techniques, through to experts revealing the
secrets of buying art for both interior design and investment.

Show highlights include the Galleria – a sophisticated, gallery style exhibition space showcasing and
selling works from established galleries, emerging artists selling direct to the public, an Expo with a
gamut of art supplies for sale, educational programs and an interactive stage area.

Animalia: A Short Trip Up III – An art installation by Susannah Williams as part of Sydney

Fringe Festival 2012.
For Fringe Festival 2012, Susannah Williams will compose Animalia: A Short Trip Up III a

site specific drawing installation on the walls at Art Est. Gallery.
Susannah Williams creates site specific installations that expose the drawing process

directly to the audience.  Composed of a range materials including paper, pins, collage,

string, tin and fairy lights,   Susannah’s ephemeral drawing installations create visual

narratives that explore the formal concerns of drawing, namely colour, line and structure.

In Animalia, Susannah uses the animal form to house personal ideas of history, memory,

movement feeling and space.  Over 10 days, Susannah Williams will have an open studio,

composing and installing Animalia using paper collage, pins and string.
Exhibition dates:  7 September to 30 September

Studio open day and artist talk Sunday 16 September 2pm-4pm

Art Est. Gallery and Art School

IN GALLERY with Alaska Projects

7 07 2012

1) How did you come up with the name Alaska Projects?
   Was it your first choice?

It’s from a Velvet Underground song called Stephanie Says. In the song they refer to Stephanie as ALASKA because she is so cold and distant. It seemed to suit the cold and out of the way location of the ALASKA projects space. Some people have told me that they read the lyric as a cocaine reference but it’s not my take. It was my first choice.

2) What kind of artists do you want showing in your Space?

We show a variety of artist across all mediums from painting to performance. We like artists who display bravery and know what they want to achieve
or are prepared to dive head first into trying to work that out.

3) Using an underground carpark as a venue, what percentage of the
artists that show there make site specific works?

It’s hard to put a percentage on it but as it is such an unusual space everything in it in some way gets influenced by the space.

   4) What is the best way to approach Alaska Projects to show work?

Send us an email at contact@alaskaprojects.com and then be prepared to come down and have coffee and talk about what you want to do.

5) What is the philosophy of the space?

Opportunity. Giving artists an opportunity to experiment and develop work without some of the traditional confines.

6) If you can, what advise can you give to an artist looking for
representation, and what would it be?

I think representation is something that comes to artists rather then them looking for it. The best way to position yourself to be in that position is
to concentrate on making great work and taking as many opportunities to show as possible. Oh an document document document. People have short memories. If you are working on a body of work make sure you have something to show for it. Lastly, get out and about. See as many shows as possible and meet everyone you can. Don’t just hang in your own little circles.

7) It is a hard market out there, how are you finding it?

We aren’t that market driven and although we do sell work we are not defined by it. We seem to sell well but really are more interested in terms of visitation. In that respect, the markets great. People are interested in getting out there and experiencing shows.

8) How does an ARI make money to keep going?

It depends on the ARI. Our ARI ALASKA makes money from sales, Government support.

9) There are so many empty spaces out there that could be used for the
arts, what are your thoughts?

Absolutely, it kills me. I see artists that I’m very close to working away in tiny studios and it seems crazy to me in that there is so much empty space.

10) There are plenty of ARI (Artist run initiatives) out there, What
are you thoughts on these spaces vs Commercial galleries?

I think that ARIs are feeders for commercial galleries and sustainers. If you are represented by a gallery you might only get the chance to have a solo show once every 18 months. ARIs provide and opportunity for represented artists to show in between gallery shows. This is really important. It’s a way of developing ideas in experimental space. Smart gallerists visit ARIs too. They get a chance to see who’s coming up. For emerging artists (non represented) ARIs are like oxygen.

11) Melbourne vs Sydney how do you see the arts and the major differences?

None. They both have great spaces and great artists. i was just in Melbourne and the only difference is the rules of playing pool and what they call Schooners. Artists drift between states any way. One of my favourite artists is from Perth.

12) Social media is everywhere, do you use it and does it help?

We use it all the time and it works. It’s great. There are some obvious political issues but we use it to our advantage.

13) What art do you have on your wall at home and your office?

I have emerging artists associated with ALASKA. I have lots of works by Sarah Contos, Samuel Hodge, Bridie Connell as well as works by Ella Barclay and Kenzie Larsen and some more street stuff like a Lister, Neckface and a prized original Keith Haring Drawing mixed in with works from Maningrida.

14) What shows are coming up over the next couple of months?

We are doing SafARI as well as Ben Terakes and group shows curated by Tom Polo and Joel Mu.

15) Where can we find you?
