Closing Night Gala – Safety Not Guaranteed

“WANTED: Someone to go back in time with me. This is not a joke. You’ll get paid after we get back.
Must bring your own weapons. Safety not guaranteed. I have only done this once before.”
This unusual classified ad inspires three cynical Seattle magazine employees to look for the story behind it.
They set out for the scenic seaside community of Ocean View and embark on a comical adventure. Darius
(Aubrey Plaza, of hit television comedy Parks and Recreation) is a disillusioned college graduate who interns at the magazine.
She’s joined by a fellow intern, the very serious Arnau (Karan Soni), and their boozy boss, Jeff (Jake Johnson),
and the three go about some clumsy investigative journalism. Jeff is apparently only interested in the story
so he can hook up with an old flame who lives in Ocean View, so Darius and Arnau are left largely to their own devices.
They find an eccentric named Kenneth (Mark Duplass, mumblecore pioneer and co-director of SFF film Jeff, Who Lives at Home),
a supermarket clerk who believes he’s solved the riddle of time travel and intends to depart again soon.
Safety Not Guaranteed is a surprising and very funny sci-fi comedy with heart.

Come celebrate the end of the 59th Sydney Film Festival in style as the Closing Night Gala sends
off another great season. a chance to experience the red-carpet glamour of one of Australia’s premiere film events in one of its most beautiful venues.

Visual Art
Factory 49 Paris

Factory 49 wants to open a Showroom in Paris to be run in a similar fashion to our
Sydney Showroom. We have found a space to buy and need the funds to do that.
Factory 49 is a registered “not-for-profit” organisation which has been running very
successfully for 6 years in Sydney. It is run by a committee of mature artists.
Paris is chosen as a venue because Factory 49 has already built up a network due to
the Director visiting 2 months each year for the past 6 years. Paris is also a perfect
city for a stepping stone to other European countries. This will enable Australian
artists to have a much larger profile and help them professionally.

FACTORY 49 AIMS AND OBJECTIVES:

1. establish and promote artistic activities related to the guiding principles of the
international art movement known as either non-objective art, geometric art, abstract art or non realistic art.
2. provide a Showroom and outdoor Walls for the mounting of works and installations that
display historical and contemporary artworks within the traditions of abstraction.
3. provide a platform for visiting artists of national and international stature with
associated free residencies and lectures, thus becoming part of a large network and exchange.
4. bring emerging artists into a close relationship with other mature or visiting artists,
writers and curators from around NSW, interstate and overseas, &  promote them locally & internationally.
6. co-ordinate an educational program for Primary children as well as a local community program
to introduce contemporary art. Outreach to University students seeking to affiliate or
broaden their understanding of such regional activities.
7. gain a wider critical acceptance of abstract art while further developing artists profiles.
8. establish an archive that documents images, videos, catalogues, texts, articles and books.
9. publish a Year Book every 12 months as well as all of the normal material for shows.
10.seek grants from NSW Ministry of the Arts, Marrickville Council and private sponsors.

HELP NEEDED!!
Help in minding the gallery on an ongoing basis on either Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays between 1-6pm.
The gallery office space is now equipped with comfortable seating and as always a nice aircon/heater to keep you toasty. There is also a Dodo internet thingy to keep net junkies satisfied. Ideal for those studying and need a remote industrial getaway.
If you know anyone who could help out, that’d be real sweet. Doesn’t have to be a consistent thing, just dependable.

Contact the gallery if you think you can help.

Call out for artists to do art in squatted spaces

Fire Gallery will start it’s string of art exhibitions in squatted art spaces. The first of many will be in Newtown. Our crew is looking for all sorts of artists to work with odd spaces doing graffiti, stencils, murals, performances or art installations…or anything creative you may want to do.

The reason behind this project is to make art spaces available to artists. Such spaces would otherwise remain unused and abandoned. Anyone participating in this project needs to understand the legal implications attached to trespassing if caught by police. However, most times police will only ask you to move on and only the art organisers will be left to deal with the consequences. Living in fear is for losers so get onboard and do some cool art projects with Little Fish. Everyone is welcome to participate and all ideas and proposals will be considered.

This project will also be highlighting exploitation against artists by the art world where artists need to hire a space and also pay commissions on sales of artworks.

PYRMONT FESTIVAL presents the 6th ANNUAL PYRMONT ART PRIZE

EVEN BIGGER & BETTER THAN EVER
PIRRAMA PARK

SUNDAY 20 MAY 11 AM – 5 PM
On Sunday the 20 May 2012 a great day has been planned for the celebration of the sixth annual
Pyrmont Art Prize. This year the event will be held in Pirrama Park at the old Police Water
site on the panoramic foreshore of Sydney Harbour, at the end of Harris Street. This exciting
venue has recently been converted for public use by the City of Sydney.
The day will feature over 300 new artworks on display for the prestigious PYRMONT ART PRIZE,
with thousands of $ in prizes to be won. Official guest speakers and prominent judges have
been invited, and a Peoples Choice Award will also be presented from the attending public.
Live music and unique performances are always a special feature of the Festival. This year
the festival will include classical students from the conservatorium, street theatre and
local talented musicians who will perform all day in conjunction with the Pyrmont
Festival’s – Mudgee wine & food for tasting.
All artists are invited to enter the art prize, whether they are well known & not so well
known and create an art piece for public display. A children’s section will on be on show,
featuring the artwork of local primary, secondary & tertiary students with special prizes to be won.
This popular art event has been well attended by the community in past years, and many beautiful,
original artworks may be purchased on the day.

The theme of the art show is SMALL IS BEAUTIFUL. All artworks must be 12’x12’ in size and canvases
can be picked up from TAP Gallery; 278 palmer St Darlinghurst.
The entry fee of $20/$15 concession includes a canvas.
This year the Pyrmont Art Festival has collaborated with Culture at Work and Derivan to widen its
scope by inviting six local primary schools to participate in a separate exhibition that will be
located in the children’s playground at Pirrama Park on Sunday May 20th.
The schools include Ultimo Public School, Glebe Public School, St James Primary School Glebe,
Forest Lodge Public School, Darlington Public School and Our Lady of Mount Carmel Primary School in Waterloo.
300 small canvases have been delivered to the schools this week by Sherryl Ryan Vice President
of the Pyrmont Ultimo Chamber of Commerce and CEO of Culture at Work, a not for profit arts organisation in Pyrmont.
Derivan paints supported the purchase of the canvases by supplying them at cost and the Pyrmont
Ultimo Chamber of Commerce donated the canvases to the schools. The theme of the schools exhibition
is linked to the school curriculum with different stages at different schools choosing topics from
The Built Environment, Global Communities, Future Transport, Caring for our Environment engaging
creativity and thinking. Each school will receive art materials from Derivan for participating
and 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes of art materials will be awarded to the best 3 student artworks.
Judges Andrew Frost, art critic, writer and broadcaster and Marlene Sarroff, visual artist and
Factory 49 committee member will judge and award the prizes on the day.
This is the first time that schools have been invited to join in the art making for the Pyrmont
Art Festival and the response was so fantastic we look forward to inviting more schools to participate in 2013.
The Pyrmont Ultimo Chamber of Commerce, Tap Gallery, the City Hub, City of Sydney and Destination
NSW and other local Pyrmont and Ultimo businesses actively encourage every one to be involved in
this fun community event by attending & supporting local talent.
Don’t miss this fabulous day, Sunday 20 May 2012.

Kaleidoscope Gallery Life Drawing classes

‘Works on Paper’
life drawing class

6 x 2 hour classes
commencing Tuesday 24th April, 2012

Drawing instructor Olivia Burge (Fine Art Hons. NAS) & Kaleidoscope Gallery are pleased to present our 2012 life drawing class, Works on Paper.

Each fortnight a two-hour class will be held at Kaleidoscope Gallery with the aim of exploring and experimenting in line-making with the human figure.

The translation of the three-dimensional model on to a flat plane lies at the heart of drawing and has challenged artists since pre-presective.
In these six classes, we explore the idea of drawing as an abstract activity; through the analysis of line, proportion, weight, scale, tone, depth and light.
Throughout the course we investigate these visual values and their relationship to the human figure with a range of traditional materials (charcoal, graphite, ink) and papers.

Cost: $200. This includes six weeks tuition, life drawing models, a glass of wine & drawing instructor. KG will also include a variety of paper, charcoal, inks and drawing materials to experiment with on paper.

All skill levels are welcome and we encourage students who are interested in using alternative materials to contact Kaleidoscope Gallery prior to class.

Works on Paper drawing class commences Tuesday the 24th April, from 6-8pm, followed by every Second Tuesday for the duration of the course.

Class dates:

Tuesday, 8th May 2012

Real Refuses: THE DEMOCRATIC ARCHIBALD PRIZE !
Saturday 14th April marks the 16th Anniversary of Australia’s largest Art “non” Event –
Real Refuses – where artists not selected for the ARCHIBALD, WYNNE, SULMAN, and

Real Refuses has become firmly established as part of the “Archibald Season”.
While it is an exhibition of rejected artwork, it is much more than that…
It is about giving a fair go to all the artists involved in Australia’s largest art events.

Not everyone can win an Archibald but here everyone can exhibit along side their peers.
(You’ll find past winners of Australia’s biggest art prizes here as well!)
In the past an extraordinary range of subjects from the NSW Premier, Mayor of Willoughby,
Anthony Mundeen, Tony Abbott, Leo Sawyer, the then Prime Minister John Howard,  Madame Lash,
Elizabeth Cummings, Professor Bruce James Brew, and Jaiwei, a winner of the Sulman.

ROOKWOOD NECROPOLIS SCULPTURE AWARD
THE GROUNDSWELL PROJECT PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARD
ARTIST AT THE ARMORY AWARD
PEACOCK GALLERY RESIDENCY AWARD

The Anglican and General Cemetery Trusts are partnering with Sydney Olympic Park Authority,
Auburn City Council and The GroundSwell Project to create the fourth annual Rookwood Sculpture Walk.
The 2012 outdoor exhibition will once again be featured amongst the graves in one of the older sites
of the cemetery and neighbouring areas. With views of the city on the horizon, this site offers artists
a rare opportunity to showcase their work in an extremely thought provoking context.

Artists who would like to be considered to exhibit in this unique environment are invited to submit
an expression of interest. The Trusts request artists address themes appropriate to the site,
such as grief, loss, memory, death, mourning, spirituality, religion and heritage as well as
the culture around memorial, eulogy, burial and ceremony. Artists can choose to approach these
themes in a representational, symbolic or abstract way.

Artists’ Residency Programme Co-ordinator
Irish Museum of Modern Art

During 2012 IMMA is introducing a new online application system for those applying to the Artists’
Residency Programme. The online system will be open to prospective applicants for six weeks from
Friday 18th May until Friday 29th June 2012 and will be accessible through IMMA’s website along
with supporting application guidelines. Successful applications will be scheduled to
participate on the Artists’ Residency Programme in 2013 when it resumes fully at IMMA.
For 2012, due to the refurbishment at IMMA’s RHK site, ARP activities will be limited,

will recommence once the Museum returns to its permanent location in 2013.

Queer or Occult : Calling for all artists!
Dear artists, photographers and performers!

The Den Magazine is having it’s next launch at the Gateway Hotel on Friday the 13th of April.
We want to utilise the top gallery of the pub for a ‘Queer or Occult’ themed Art Exhibition.
You’re invited to submit a work, or several! We would love a diverse mixture, crossing all
mediums to explore this theme and represent the art community in regional and coastal areas.
All artworks will be up for sale on the night and will kick start the evening of ghoulish gaiety.
More information on it’s way, fire me back any questions!
Ps. Prizes planned, plus a free entry to the Official Magazine Launch held afterwards for all
exhibiting artists. Send me a yes, if you’re down with that.

Also, pass this on if you know of anyone who would be interested!

CALL OUT: Sound Garden Acousmatic Sounds
When: March 22 at 6:00pm until April 15 at 6:00pm

ATVP presents Sound Garden: Acousmatic Sounds
The Sound Garden is an outdoor space established for the 2012 season –
featuring a rotating roster of experimental and contemporary sound art.
Located on the ground level in the sunny rear courtyard,
tracks are played over an immersive 2-channel stereo audio system.

Callout for interested parties to be involved in our 2012 program are now open.
Each exhibition runs for 4 weeks with our first, Acousmatic Sounds, starting 22nd March.

Acousmatic sound, is sound one hears without seeing an originating cause.
The word acousmatic, from the French acousmatique, is derived from ἀκουσματικοί akousmatikoi,
a term used to refer to probationary pupils of the philosopher Pythagoras who,
so that they might better concentrate on his teachings,
were required to sit in absolute silence while listening to their teacher deliver
his lecture from behind a veil or screen.[1]

Works can be electronic or electro-acoustic pre-recorded works that
can be played in the space throughout the entirety of the exhibition.

OPENINGS AND THE ARTS IN SYDNEY (2.5 Week end of year bumper edition) 05/12/2011 – 26/12/2011

4 12 2011

On a sad note, last week Doug Moran passed away, at age of 86. His generosity for the arts will not be forgotten and our thoughts are with his family.

This is a bumper edition, our last major blog post for the year. After this we’ll be taking a summer holiday, returning in Feb 2012. We won’t be completely silent during this time though – we’ll add interesting events and things to our blog when we hear about them.

To the galleries closing their doors for good at the end of 2011, we will miss you and we wish you all the best for future projects, keep us all informed.

This week sees lots of final shows for the year and the SCA postgrad show, details below. Don’t forget to contribute your work to the fundraising shows for artist-run spaces either – without these galleries, the art scene would look a little drab, so get your work to them.

Next year sees new competitions, posts  and a new section coming (more information coming soon!)

Finally, thank you so much for your support, without you we cannot run as smoothly.

Thankyou, and enjoy you holiday if you get one, at least get into the studio.

Merry Christmas and a happy new year! Mark Rowden

Project52 is about intrigue and the relationship between people,
objects, images and stories.

Each week, for 52 weeks, I create a drawing and a related 52-word
story inspired by objects provided by a participant.

Participants are invited to provide me with an object or a photo.
Within a week, I create an artwork and a story, using their object for inspiration.
In return, you receive a sneak preview before I post the work on my site and you
get the credit for providing the inspiration.

When all 52 works are completed, the project will culminate in an exhibition.

A free exhibition of the artists selected for the Redlands Westpac Art Prize 2012 will be
presented at the National Art School from 2 May until 2 June 2012.

PRIZE ANNOUNCEMENT:
The winning artists in both the main prize and emerging prize will be announced on
Wednesday 2 May 2012. With the exception of the winning art works that are acquired by
Redlands School, all works exhibited in the Prize will be available for purchase.

About Redlands
Established in 1884, Redlands is a leading Sydney independent school with a reputation
for innovation in education. Over the past 126 years, Redlands has expanded
significantly from its beginnings as a small school of five students to the vibrant, co-
educational, international environment of today and during that time has led much
innovation in education. An extensive range of programs – academic, sports, creative
and performing arts, outdoor education, service – gives students the opportunity to learn,
to achieve and to develop their unique skills and talents.

As in previous years Lindy will select approximately 18 contemporary Australian and
New Zealand artists to participate in the exhibition. Each of the selected artists
will in turn nominate an “emerging” artist to also participate.

The successful selected artist will receive a $20,000 cheque courtesy of Westpac’s sponsorship.
The successful emerging artist will receive a $10,000 cheque courtesy of Konica Minolta.
Both artworks will in turn become part of the School’s teaching collection.

For further information please contact Tina Flemning on 02 9908 6484 or tfleming@redlands.nsw.edu.au

The ATVP Demo Sale is a fundraiser for the gallery and an opportunity to sell your
artworks in the lead up to the Christmas Season. The show will take up the entirety
of the Ground Floor Gallery as well as our two new spaces – the Starewell Gallery

OIL PAINTING CLASSES with Celia Gullett

Applications are now open for a one year course in oil painting classes with Celia Gullett. This course is designed to familiarize students with the historical principles and techniques of painting. The central theme of the course is to investigate and understand how artists have tackled the difficulty of creating three dimensions on a flat surface. Artists from numerous periods of western painting have passed down invaluable methods to achieve a range of effects in oils. By focusing on the use of underpainting systems, and painting in layers, it is envisaged that students will expand their repertoire and be able to bring greater purpose and skill to their practice.
The course is suitable for established practitioners who wish to extend their technical knowledge, as well as students with no prior experience. Beginners will gain a strong foundation in oil painting.

Students will learn a wide range of traditional systems that will expand their
understanding of the craft of painting, and bring about a more informed attitude towards the subtle aspects of working with oil paint. As well as gaining an understanding of these traditional systems, students are introduced to the properties and characteristics of pigments, mediums and supports, encouraging students to familiarize themselves with archival practices. Subjects include the figure, still life, portraiture and landscape, seen technically through particular painters in western history. Whilst it is often the case during the course that the subject is set, the range of techniques and effects covered can be adapted to figurative or non-figurative painting. The pursuit of an individual language is encouraged and fostered in and out of class, and students are expected to develop
their own responses to the information presented during the year.

The year is divided into 4 terms, which roughly follow the school year. New students are required to attend on a Friday from 9.30 – 2pm with a short lunch break. Class size is limited to 12. Students need to make a commitment to attend the full programme, as the course has been designed in stages to allow maximum attention to each area of study.
If students wish to continue studying after the first year, as has been the case to date, there is a mixture of self – generated and set projects. Various artists from the Impressionists, the 20th century, and our current time are covered. The use of contemporary materials is also discussed and investigated in the second year of study.

The studio for the classes is situated in Annandale. Applicants should contact Celia Gullett to enquire about costs and equipment. There is a recommended materials
list, which will provide students with a preferred palette, mediums and brushes. etc. Classes for new students are on Fridays and continuing students on Thursdays.
