2013 MOSMAN ART PRIZE – call for entries, announcing exhibition dates and judge
Mosman Art Gallery has opened the call for entries to the 66th annual Mosman Art Prize – presenting a public exhibition of finalists works from 13 July to 25 August 2013.
Mosman Art Prize is a national painting award of $30,000. Sponsored by Mosman Council it is the longest running municipal art prize in Australia. The acquisitive award forms the basis of the Mosman Art Collection, a valuable and important survey of Australian painting.
The Mosman Art Prize is Mosman Art Gallery’s flagship annual exhibition. This free public exhibition features selected finalists from a pool of established and emerging artists who work in oils, acrylics or watercolours. A Public Program of Artist Talks accompanies the exhibition offering insights to contemporary painting practice.
Acclaimed artist Lucy Culliton will Judge this year’s award. Lucy won the Mosman Art Prize in 2000 for her work, Still Life/White Ground.
The 2013 Mosman Art Prize awards a prize pool of $40,000 across the following categories: The Mosman Art Prize – $30,000 – major award (acquisitive), The Allan Gamble Memorial Art Prize – $3,000 (for built environment), The Mosman Art Prize Commendation Prize – $5,000, Young Emerging Artists’ Award (under 35 years) – $2,000 and the Mosman Art Society Viewers’ Choice Award  – $1,000.

Previous winners of the major Prize include David Fairbairn (2012), Craig Waddell (2010), Jasper Knight (2008), Adam Cullen and Tom Carment (joint winners 2005), Guan Wei (2001), Tim Johnson (1999), Elisabeth Cummings (1996), Jenny Sages (1994) and Nicholas Harding (1993).  Margaret Olley was the inaugural winner in 1947.

“bentART is focused on encouraging, promoting and supporting the visual art of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer and Intersexed (“LGBTQI”) people nationwide. They are keen to increase awareness of the work of LGBTQI artists among the broader community and welcome the support of non-LGBTQI people through coming to the exhibition, joining as a member or sponsoring a prize.”

Centrehouse/Gallery Lane Cove invites artists to submit entries to the Lloyd Rees Memorial Youth Art Awards and exhibition. This year’s exhibition will be held in the architect designed Gallery Lane Cove.

Wallpeople is a collaborative art event that happens in 45 cities around the world at the same time. A street wall will become a makeshift outdoor gallery, where all participants may exhibit their own works and collaborate to create an improvised open-air museum.
This year, Sydney joins the global network of creatives for the first time, and invites all city artists & creative enthusiasts alike to join us on the 1st of June in Newtown.
Created in Barcelona in 2009, Wallpeople invites people to create and be part of a unique happening in an urban space, thus making an ephemeral street artwork.
Wallpeople 2013 – MUSIC EDITION
The guiding theme for 2013 is MUSIC. We want everyone to express their unique relationship with music, no matter what genre or style. The participants have two possibilities:
1. Reinterpret a song in an artistic format of choice: illustration, photography, text, painting, collage, canvas…
2. Create any works related to music in a general way: For example: a tribute to an artist, a concert, a musical moment of your life, your favourite style, musical origins…

HOW TO PARTICIPATE?
1. Everyone can participate. You just need to join the event on Facebook.
2. On 1st of June at 12:00pm, go to Camperdown Memorial Rest Park in Newtown with one or more works made by you.
3. Works will be accepted in any format: drawing, painting, illustration, photography, collage, paste-up, comics, paper, cardboard, wood (light), fabric, crochet, prints, mixed compositions, plates, postcards, craft, origami, album covers, vinyl, painted cassettes, a post-it, etc.
4. Stick up your work(s) on the wall with the rest of the works. If your inspiration is a particular song, you must indicate its singer and name.
5. The organization shall have double-sided tape to stick their works attendees. We still ENCOURAGE YOU TO BRING YOUR OWN MOUNTING TAPE OR ADHESIVE TAPE if possible, to facilitate the process. You can also BYO arts supplies as we encourage all participants to make live art creations.
6. Organization will mark the start and ending of the event (about 3-4 hours).
7. When the exhibition ends, you can take your work back or swap it with another participant’s, thus turning the event into an artistic exchange. If you want, you can write down your contact info, in case who took your work wants to contact you.

ACCEPTED FORMATS:
Light works which can be stuck up to the wall with adhesive tape.
Any techniques or formats are permitted, provided that the work refers to a musical subject
WE DON’T ACCEPT:
Works bigger than 1x1m.
Works that could cause damage to the wall. Drilling the wall is prohibited.
Works with offensive or discriminatory content.

CALL OUT TO EMERGING ARTISTS

Centrehouse/Gallery Lane Cove invites artists to submit entries to the Lloyd Rees Memorial Youth Art Awards and exhibition. This year’s exhibition will be held in the architect designed Gallery Lane Cove.

The John Fries Memorial Prize celebrates emerging art through a $10,000 non-acquisitive award donated by the Fries family in memory of former Viscopy director and honorary treasurer, John Fries.

This year’s guest curator Sebastian Goldspink said that the prize has grown to become a significant event in Sydney’s cultural and contemporary art calendar. “The John Fries Memorial Prize showcases some of the most engaging and experimental artwork from the emerging end of the contemporary art scene,” Goldspink said, “that’s why it is so exciting to be a part of this prize – the finalists not only represent the cutting edge of contemporary art, they are producing work which challenges our perception of art forms and practice.”

The prize is open to Australian and New Zealand artists who are not enrolled as a student and whose work is not represented in the collection of an Australian state, territory or national public art gallery. The John Fries Memorial Prize is administered by Copyright Agency | Viscopy.

Goldspink said the prize aimed to provide emerging artists with a valuable career development opportunity. “The finalists in the John Fries Memorial Prize exhibition will have the opportunity to share their work with leading figures in the contemporary art sector including our judges – Dr Daniel Mudie Cunningham, Felicity Fenner, Dr Sanné Mestrom and Kath Fries. We’re lucky in 2013 to have a judging panel with diverse expertise across a number of organisations and events such as Artbank and the Venice Biennale. I’m looking forward to viewing the entries we receive and seeing which finalists will be part of the exhibition later this year.” (Sebastian Goldspink, JFMP 2013 Guest Curator)

The finalists work will be exhibited at Gaffa Galleries Sydney, 24 August – 14 September, and the winner will be announced at 7pm on 27 August.

Boomalli Aboriginal Artists Co-operative celebrated 25 years of existence in November last year.
9 of the 10 living members made it to a brilliant celebration (Vale Michael Riley).

This epic journey has only just begun as we strive to move the co-operative forward for our community and
younger artists. Our volunteer contributions to the ongoing survival of the co-operative run into hundreds of
thousands of dollars. People believe and donate their time and expertise to ensure that Aboriginal people
have a voice in their own country.

This event will occur in the week of the anniversary of the 1967 Referendum for Citizenship.
The opening will occur on Wednesday 29 May from 6 – 8pm and run through until Saturday 1 June.
The last date for dropping off the donated work will be the Sunday 26 May by 4pm.

We have an inherited debt where interest is accruing daily (we are being asked to pay someone else’s debt in the form of rates)
Our commitment to resolving issues has been highlighted by the endurance that we have displayed,
particularly in the last 3 years.

Exploring the natural world through artistic creativity

What on Earth are we Eating? Curated by Ebony Secombe & ATVPs Co-Director team * is an exhibition that provides a platform for discourse pertaining to, and around, the relationships we have with food. The ways in which we relate to what we eat, what others eat, how we eat and who we eat with expose some of the inner most layers of the human condition.
Notions and issues of health, mass (over or under) consumption, biotechnologies & genetical engineering, sustainability and environmental/ecological concerns, as well as examining how food is used as a vessel for human interaction in contemporary society, are just some of the topics that one could choose as an avenue for inquiry.
Why do we eat together (or alone)? What does it mean to be a consious (slow food) eater? What drives our eating habits? How does what we eat or don’t eat effect our bodies? How do our choices around food effect our environment? These are some of the questions that this exhibition is seeking to present a platform for discussion and interaction.
As part of this exhibition ATVP will host a series of intimate dinner parties (What on Earth are we eating tonight?). Members of the community (individuals or groups), exhibiting artists and our audience are invited to propose themed evenings/menus for the program by volunteering an evening to cook a meal for 8 guests. Each dinner guest will contribute $10 to the evening, and the selected chefs for each evening will create a 3-course meal with a budget of $80. Each dinner party will be documented where cooks and guests will be given the opportunity to discuss the exhibition, artworks and its themes in a friendly conversational environment.
Proposals for artworks, performances and happenings are open to artists, working in any mediums, including edible art.
Propose up to 5 artworks per artist. An exhibition fee of $100 per artist will apply to each artist selected.
