The John Fries Memorial Prize celebrates emerging art through a $10,000 non-acquisitive award donated by the Fries family in memory of former Viscopy director and honorary treasurer, John Fries.
Enter online by 6 May http://www.viscopy.org.au/art_prize_submissions/new
This year’s guest curator Sebastian Goldspink said that the prize has grown to become a significant event in Sydney’s cultural and contemporary art calendar. “The John Fries Memorial Prize showcases some of the most engaging and experimental artwork from the emerging end of the contemporary art scene,” Goldspink said, “that’s why it is so exciting to be a part of this prize – the finalists not only represent the cutting edge of contemporary art, they are producing work which challenges our perception of art forms and practice.”

The prize is open to Australian and New Zealand artists who are not enrolled as a student and whose work is not represented in the collection of an Australian state, territory or national public art gallery. The John Fries Memorial Prize is administered by Copyright Agency | Viscopy.

Goldspink said the prize aimed to provide emerging artists with a valuable career development opportunity. “The finalists in the John Fries Memorial Prize exhibition will have the opportunity to share their work with leading figures in the contemporary art sector including our judges – Dr Daniel Mudie Cunningham, Felicity Fenner, Dr Sanné Mestrom and Kath Fries. We’re lucky in 2013 to have a judging panel with diverse expertise across a number of organisations and events such as Artbank and the Venice Biennale. I’m looking forward to viewing the entries we receive and seeing which finalists will be part of the exhibition later this year.” (Sebastian Goldspink, JFMP 2013 Guest Curator)

The finalists work will be exhibited at Gaffa Galleries Sydney, 24 August – 14 September, and the winner will be announced at 7pm on 27 August.

This epic journey has only just begun as we strive to move the co-operative forward for our community and
younger artists. Our volunteer contributions to the ongoing survival of the co-operative run into hundreds of
thousands of dollars. People believe and donate their time and expertise to ensure that Aboriginal people
have a voice in their own country.

This event will occur in the week of the anniversary of the 1967 Referendum for Citizenship.
The opening will occur on Wednesday 29 May from 6 – 8pm and run through until Saturday 1 June.
The last date for dropping off the donated work will be the Sunday 26 May by 4pm.

We have an inherited debt where interest is accruing daily (we are being asked to pay someone else’s debt in the form of rates)
Our commitment to resolving issues has been highlighted by the endurance that we have displayed,
particularly in the last 3 years.

We are asking you to stand with us and secure a future for this co-operative.

WhatOnEarthAreWeEating
Call for proposals: What on Earth are we Eating?
ATVP is currently Calling for Proposals for…
What on Earth are we Eating?
a group exhibition about food
9 – 19 May 2013
Opening launch Thursday 9 May 6-9pm
Artist talks Saturday 11 May 2-4pm
What are we eating tonight? Dinner Parties
(Sat 11, Tues 14, Thur 16 & Sat 18 May from 7pm)
What on Earth are we Eating? Curated by Ebony Secombe & ATVPs Co-Director team * is an exhibition that provides a platform for discourse pertaining to, and around, the relationships we have with food. The ways in which we relate to what we eat, what others eat, how we eat and who we eat with expose some of the inner most layers of the human condition.
Notions and issues of health, mass (over or under) consumption, biotechnologies & genetical engineering, sustainability and environmental/ecological concerns, as well as examining how food is used as a vessel for human interaction in contemporary society, are just some of the topics that one could choose as an avenue for inquiry.
Why do we eat together (or alone)? What does it mean to be a consious (slow food) eater? What drives our eating habits? How does what we eat or don’t eat effect our bodies? How do our choices around food effect our environment? These are some of the questions that this exhibition is seeking to present a platform for discussion and interaction.
As part of this exhibition ATVP will host a series of intimate dinner parties (What on Earth are we eating tonight?). Members of the community (individuals or groups), exhibiting artists and our audience are invited to propose themed evenings/menus for the program by volunteering an evening to cook a meal for 8 guests. Each dinner guest will contribute $10 to the evening, and the selected chefs for each evening will create a 3-course meal with a budget of $80. Each dinner party will be documented where cooks and guests will be given the opportunity to discuss the exhibition, artworks and its themes in a friendly conversational environment.
Proposals for artworks, performances and happenings are open to artists, working in any mediums, including edible art.
Propose up to 5 artworks per artist. An exhibition fee of $100 per artist will apply to each artist selected.

This year, we have a long list of great venues that are already signed on and waiting to hear from you. They are all up on our website for you to search through. Expect to see more passionate, unconventional communities make their mark on the stage, the streets… and beyond!
You’ve got until May 10 to make your wildest ideas a reality, but if you register before the end of March, you’ll get a nice $10 discount on the registration fee. For info on all of the requirements and more, head to the Sydney Fringe website, where we’ve got as much info for you to look at as we can think of. And if we’ve missed anything, you can shoot a reply to this very email, or call us at 0466 878 958.
Or, better yet, stop in to our new digs! We’ve relocated from our Marrickville location to right in the heart of Newtown, at 5 Eliza St. Simply head down the side street nearest to Zanzibar on King Street, and look for the big fancy banner. And keep a note of this location, because we’ll be keeping this as our hub for more exciting activities for all of you to enjoy…
…but you’ll hear more about that in good time. In any case, hope to see or talk to you soon!

Curated by local duo SuperKaleidoscope and presented in association with UTS, the Parlour evenings will see a host of young artists, musicians, speakers and theorists take over Pier 2/3 with a program of events to complement and respond to the exhibition. Live music from FBi DJs, drinks from our pop-up bar on site, and commissioned performances and installations come together to bring the Pier alive in unexpected ways.

[Description]

Dear all SCA Citizens!

At the AGM, all those interested in the positions available at SCASS can put their hand up and be democratically elected by their peers.

- Manning the desk at openings – Usually done on a rotating roster
- Assisting exhibiting artists with installations
- Assisting Directors with painting and maintenance of space
- Enjoying a great night at every opening!

What is DedSpace you ask?

DedSpace Gallery is a student-run, not-for-profit gallery located in building 15 of Sydney College of the Arts (SCA). It is made possible with funding from University of Sydney Union (USU) and Sydney College of the Arts Student Society (SCASS), both of which are directly funded by ACCESS program membership.

We aim to provide a venue for students to exhibit their work and to gain professional experience to further assist them for a future outside of the university setting. We also intend to foster the student experience by providing a space that encourages interdisciplinary dialogue and critical discussion.

We look forward to seeing you at the SCASS AGM on 10th April 2013!

bigci_1 Bigci.org Artist-residency

Artists are welcome to stay for an agreed period of time either in the house or the studio – depending on availability – to create new work, develop ideas, or work on their projects. The work space will depend on artist’s project requirements. The vision is that the extraordinary beauty of the surroundings will provide a ground for professional development. The house, studio and bushland are available for all kinds of initiatives. Each project will be agreed on individually. Proposals are welcome throughout the year – each time of year has its own beauty and creative possibilities. It is recommended that proposals are submitted well in advance. Successful applicants are charged a subsidised residency fee. The 2013 rate is AUD$250 (plus $25 GST) per person per week for Australian artists and AUD$300 (plus $30 GST) for international artists. This includes a private room and shared living facilities, bathroom, kitchen, internet,  electricity, water and artist support. Successful applicants will be responsible for all other costs including food, transport, travel costs, insurance and art materials. They will be required to pay a refundable bond of AUD$500 prior to occupancy to cover any costs associated with damage or extraordinary cleaning. BigCi is located on the edge of Wollemi National Park, about one hour and a half away from Sydney. Due to a remote location of the BigCi, a car is strongly recommended. Please note that BigCi does not provide transport and that the artists are responsible for making the neccesary arrangements. In cases when the artist is unable to have a car, we will provide a pick up/drop off from Richmond train station on arrival/departure and once a week transport for food shopping. Note that there is no stipend or living allowance attached to the stay in BigCi. Interstate and overseas artists in particular should consider other ways to fund their visit.

There is a possibility of an exhibition at the end of the residency and of a presentation on the BigCi website as Resident–in–Spotlight. To secure the booking, the residency fee including the refundable bond is payable upon the approval of the application form. All applicants will be notified in writing of the outcome of their application.

Sydney art exhibitions and gallery openings 25/03/2013 – 31/03/2013 – Sydney Art Galleries and Art Community

24 03 2013

As many a Sydneysider would know, the Archibald, Wynne and Sulman Prize night was on last Friday.
It was a fun evening and here’s a couple of photos from the night.

You make your way up the AGNSW steps to the guards (ticket ladies), surrounded by people trying to get in through any means. When you enter you hit a wall of well-dressed art supporters and arty folk not forgetting a trail of people heading to the bar, nodding to every one as you pass. The speeches come and go, the winners are congratulated, the wine flows and the crowd start their way to see the works down stairs. The buzz, the gossip, the whispers through the gallery… “What do you think?”, “Is that the artist?”,”That’s a good one!” My favourite is “I could better than that!”. When you get a chance have a look at this one, there are some great works, a few that are ok, and a couple you may question but the general vibe is good.

There are lots of artist call outs at the end of the post for you to enter. Take care, see you soon. Email us with all your shows and artist info, cmpetitions, festivals, special offers…Anything art based.

SafARI is the unofficial fringe exhibition to the Biennale of Sydney, and 2014 will mark its fifth edition. SafARI showcases the work of emerging and unrepresented Australian artists in multiple sites across Sydney, including Artist Run Initiatives (ARIs) and public spaces. It is timed to coincide with the crucial first opening weeks of the Biennale of Sydney in March 2014.

Previous participants in SafARI have gone on to new heights in their practice and careers; artists such as Clark Beaumont, Liam Benson, Tom Polo, Karla Dickens and Mark Rodda.
SafARI is now calling for submissions from emerging and unrepresented artists working across diverse media across Australia to be considered for SafARI 2014. Solo artists and/or groups of one or more artists will be considered.

Kaldor Public Art Project’s ambitious ‘13 Rooms’
More than 140 local performers will deliver landmark works by some of the world’s best-known artists for Kaldor Public Art Project’s ambitious ‘13 Rooms’ exhibition of ‘living sculpture’
- Performers include identical twins; migrants with long hair; athletically built males with strong foreign accents; and former service men and women  -

Sydney, Australia:  More than 140 local performers have been sourced by Kaldor Public Art Projects to participate in 13 Rooms, the major international contemporary art exhibition of ‘living sculpture’ being presented from 11 until 21 April 2013 at Pier 2/3 in Sydney’s Walsh Bay.

Visitors will be invited to explore 13 purpose-built rooms inside the Pier, entering through one door per room to come face-to-face with living, breathing artworks. 13 Rooms is first exhibition of its kind in Australia, a vital and all-encompassing new experience where art, theatre and dance combine to create immersive and interactive encounters.
13 Rooms is the most ambitious project to be undertaken in the 44-year history of Kaldor Public Art Projects and is curated by two of the world’s most respected museum directors: Hans Ulrich Obrist, Co-director of London’s Serpentine Gallery, and Klaus Biesenbach, Director of MoMA PS1 in New York. Hans Ulrich Obrist, Co-curator of 13 Rooms, described the project recently, saying: ‘The exhibition is like a sculpture gallery where all the sculptures go home at night’.
The 140 performance artists and dancers will perform inside the rooms at Pier 2/3 from 11am until 7pm for the full 11 days of the exhibition.

To those of you who don’t know me my name is Liz Nowell, and I am co-curating an event in 2014 called SafARI with Christiane Keys-Statham.  SafARI is a fringe exhibition to the Biennale of Sydney, and it has been running since 2004.
SafARI showcases the work of emerging and unrepresented Australian artists, designers and craftspeople and we have recently initiated our national artist call-out and designer call-out for the 2014 exhibition.  I thought I would send it to you to distribute through your networks – we want this to be the most widespread and diverse SafARI yet.  Feel free to forward this on or post on your social media site. We would be so appreciative!

Artist-residency

SafARI 2014
SafARI is the unofficial fringe exhibition to the Biennale of Sydney, and 2014 will mark its fifth edition. SafARI showcases the work of emerging and unrepresented Australian artists in multiple sites across Sydney, including Artist Run Initiatives (ARIs) and public spaces. It is timed to coincide with the crucial first opening weeks of the Biennale of Sydney in March 2014.
In the past, SafARI has exhibited the work of sculptors, photographers, installation artists, painters, performance artists, ceramicists, printmakers, digital, video and new media artists, and we are interested in representing the diversity of Australian contemporary arts practice again in 2014.

Submissions should include:
An artist statement (max 300 words)
A proposal of artworks/projects for SafARI 2014 (max 300 words)
Maximum of 10 images and/or footage
1 A4 page CV
Stamped SAE for return of material if required.

SafARI 2014
The PDFs are attached and the information is also available on our website at the following links:

Bigci.org
Artist-residency
