Sneak preview of the 18th Biennale of Sydney 2012: ‘all our relations’
This year’s biennale, which opens tomorrow, sees Sydney hosting works by more than 100 artists from around the world. They are being shown at some of Sydney’s best venues: Pier 2/3 in Walsh Bay, Cockatoo Island, Museum of Contemporary Art Australia and Carriageworks. The Biennale runs from June 27 until September 16, so there is no real excuse for not seeing something.
Today was the media preview of the Biennale, which I attended along with more than a hundred other members of the arts media. From what I saw, there is something at the Biennale for everyone, something to be a part of, to touch and to interact with.
The stand-out works were Peter Robinson’s ‘Gravitas Lite’ on Cockatoo Island, Liu Zhuoquan’s ‘Where are you?’ at the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia, and Nipan Oranniwesna’s ‘City of Ghosts’ as well as Yuken Teruya’s ‘Notice-Forest’ at the Art Gallery of NSW.
For me, the works in the Art Gallery of NSW came together best. Each room seemed to move beyond the individual pieces and create a greater atmosphere as a whole.
The preview began at the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia, with a talk by the two Biennale co-directors, Catherine de Zegher and Gerald McMaster (this is the first time in Biennale’s history that there has been a co curatorial team).
Walking into the first room of the MCA to hear the co-directors speak, I faced a mirage of art lovers (the media). It probably won’t be like that when you visit, but their presence created a certain intrigue that filled the room: were we there to see the work or get the best story?
Listening to Catherine and Gerald speak, it was clear that their vision for this year’s Biennale was about coming together: multidisciplinary works that allow artists to cross boundaries, linking and collaborating, as well as allowing the audience to be a part of the work, to join in the conversation with their personal experience.
On the 3rd floor of the MCA there’s a collaborative work by two Korean artists, Park Young-Sook and Yeesookyung. Yeesookyung has taken 200 broken pieces of porcelain from Park Young-Sook’s failed pieces to produce a new life, ‘Translated Vase – The Moon’. In the same room are 12 of Park Young-Sook’s successful finished pieces, a collection of white vases called ‘Moon Jar’.
Park Young-Sook – Moon Jar 2012
Liu Zhuoquan’s ‘Two-Headed Snake’ are hundreds of intricately painted bottles. At first glance it appears as if there are snakes curled up inside the bottles, but after reading the description you realise that the inside of each bottle has been individually painted to show snake skin pressing against the glass.
At Pier 2/3, there are over a thousand wind chimes hanging together from colourful ribbons. This is ‘Knock on the Sky Listen to the Sound’, the work of artist Tiffany Singh. This installation is only the beginning of Tiffany’s work. From August 7, the public can remove individual chimes and take them home to decorate, then take them to be hung at their second home at Cockatoo Island. At the end of the exhibition you’re free to collect your decorated chime for good.
Cockatoo Island has a wall of fog that you have to pass through – this is the work of Fujiko Nakaya. You have no general direction once you enter, you cannot see past a metre. So, you walk at a slow pace and hope for the best. Once through the fog, you’re in a very different scene: you’re in one of the island’s old factories and there is Western red desert sand in pattern forms along the foor (Cal Lane’s ‘Sand Lace’). Moving on from the sand, there’s a striking juxtaposition of heavy, rusting industrial machinery and light airy polystyrene chains and links. Welcome to Peter Robinson’s ‘Gravitas Lite’. His polystyrene installation engulfs the factory space and gives new meaning to the original machinery there.
Peter Robinson – Gravitas Lite 2012
Daan Roosegaarde’s ‘Dune’ in the Dog leg tunnel on Cockatoo Island needs the audience’s participation. The waist-high bed of optic fibres comes to life when it senses movement and noise. Your stillness is the work’s demise.
Finally, the Art Gallery of NSW has Yuken Teruya’s intricate work, ‘Notice-Forest’. These are delicate cut-outs created from paper bags, producing little 3D worlds for you to peer into. There is also a larger work by Nipan Oranniwesna: ‘City of Ghosts’. This is a captivating sculpture – Nipan has created a bird’s eye view of a miniature city. I felt that if you looked hard enough you may start seeing the city come to life.
Hope you enjoyed the preview, there are so many more works to see but this is just my run down of what I saw today. In the theme of the Biennale we have joined through conversation, I hope this inspires you.

Hardware Gallery 2011 Callout
Artist Opportunity – 6th Annual Google Show
This September the Seymour Centre will host Hardware Gallery’s 6th annual Google exhibition. Every year Hardware Gallery assembles a group of artists to accept an art mission. On the same day, at the same time, every artist will Google the same phrase. From a nominated page of results, all artists must select one website as their sole source of inspiration for making an artwork. It is an interactive approach to a group show that allows participating artists to unleash their creative best.
Hardware Gallery’s Google exhibition will be a major event in The Sydney Fringe Visual Arts program for 2012. In 2011, the Google exhibition showcased the work of the largest number of artists yet. This year, with an expanded Sydney Fringe Visual Arts program being curated, we are expecting to match this achievement. The 6th Annual Google exhibition will be one of the most significant exhibitions in this year’s Sydney Fringe program alongside an array of other exciting shows!
Selection Process
We have no set limit on the number of artists who can participate this year. So how are we selecting artists? Good question. In line with the curatorial aims of The Sydney Fringe, Hardware Gallery is seeking independent artists with creative and professional flair. We are looking for artists working in any medium who can adapt their work to a challenging and creative guideline. We are seeking artists who are well organised and professional in their art practice.
If you are interested in participating in the 6th Annual Google exhibition you will need to send us a bit of information about yourself, your work and why you think this exhibition is suitable for you.
Get your submission in EARLY!
Cost
$50 (plus gst) for selected artists
Time Frame
Deadline for applications to participate – 6 July, 2012
Deadline for participation fee payment – 15 July, 2012
Date of Googling – 1 Aug, 2012
Deadline for submission and delivery of works – 1 Sept, 201
What happens next?
Send us a submission that includes the details outlined below.
We will let you know if you are accepted into the show. We will send you the phrase to Google before the set day. You Google it. You get inspired and start creating your work and have two months to complete it. Multiple works and installations will be accepted.
What do you need to send us? (Deadline 6 July, 2012)
In your submission please include the following:
1. Name
2. Contact details
3. Exhibition: Google 2012
4. A brief description of your artistic practice (up to 150 words).
5. A brief explanation why you are the right artist for this show.

The Writing Project – NATIONAL CALL FOR APPLICATIONS
FELTspace presents: THE WRITING PROJECT
Would you like to
- Collaborate across Australia?
- Experiment across creative disciplines?
- Produce, publish and launch critical arts writing?
- Receive funding toward a new body of work?
The Writing Project provides this opportunity to emerging artists, curators, designers and writers!
The Writing Project is an innovative opportunity fostering experimentation and inter-disciplinary collaboration. Open to emerging arts practitioners nationwide, it encourages the creation of new critical arts writing based work.
Administered by FELTspace, a South Australian ARI, The Writing Project will fund four successful teams of four, each comprised of an emerging artist, designer, curator and writer. Together, each team will work throughout 2012-13 toward an innovative and discrete body of work, which should take any writing based form. This may involve an artist made book, ‘zine, online media, limited edition print, paste-up, video, installation, performance or exhibition.
The Writing Project aims to achieve experimental and unexpected outcomes that stretch beyond the physical and conceptual limits of arts writing. While providing a platform for collaboration and innovative new work, the project hopes to connect audiences with new perceptions and forms of arts writing. FELTspace invites applications from across Australia by or on behalf of these groups of four, including an artist, curator, writer and designer.
APPLICATIONS CLOSE MIDNIGHT, JUNE 30 2012.

Born in London, Sally developed her career as an emerging artist for three
years in New Zealand before settling in Sydney. She is a young and
exciting painter, one to watch.
2) Explain your current body of work?
The exhibition opening at Sheffer Gallery on 27 June was a body of work
that proved to be a catalyst for her ongoing research into and exploration
of the human condition.
3) If you can pick one artist as an inspiration, who would it be and why?
Picasso, no hesitation. His production was prolific, gutsy and his
conviction and unrelenting passion, experimentation and reinvention are
inspirational.
4) With your own art/art practice, where would you like to be in 10 years?
Producing breathtaking, exciting and challenging work further informed by
literature, poetry, ancient history and diverse cultures. Representing
Sydney globally.
5) How are you finding the current art market?
It is always hard to be an artist, it’s just the challenges that change.
If this year it is a slow art market, the challenge next year it will be
different. You just have to keep going and keep making work, rising to the
challenge.
6) Name four things that you cannot do without in your studio?
My ipod nano, a paint encrusted temperamental source of inspiration.
My sketch books, kept since 1998, the pile is three feet tall.
The mirror.
Tea bags, you can take the girl out of London…
7) In the arts is social media helpful or not and why?
Social media is a double edged sword. It is a great leveler and you have
very little control over it. It reduces a visceral and physical
relationship with painting into a flat digital experience limited to your
engagement with a screen.
8) What was the funniest thing you’ve heard someone say about your own work?
The spectrum of responses to my work is a constant source of amusement.
9) What is next on the agenda?
Mourning Chorus (Phoenix) at Sheffer Gallery opens 27 June and is my debut
solo Australian show. Katabasis at Salerno Gallery in Glebe is the
culmination of my Sydney studio work so far. I am really excited about it,
I don’t want to give too much away.
10) What’s is your advise to children who want to be artists?
In studio Images and photos and all its information is the property ‘Sydney art galleries and art community’& Mark Rowden, all content is copyrighted protected.
Be aware that the reproduction or copy, in whole or in part, of any of our property without our express permission is considered copyright infringement.
1) How did you come up with the gallery name? Was it your first choice?
James Dorahy Project Space was my first choice. It identified the gallery with my name and the notion of the project space in a commercial context. 6 years ago the Level 2 Project Space at the Art Gallery of NSW was well known, and now there are project spaces and project rooms included in all major art fairs. By definition a project space is an art forum that is an alternative to a conventional gallery, mine is defined by both the physicality of the gallery, as well as the work exhibited.
2) What kind of artists do you want showing in your Space?
Artists who are presenting innovative forms of contemporary art that is demonstrative of current contemporary practice.
3) What is the best way to approach James Dorahy Project Space to show work?
Expression of interests with support materials that are received are regularly reviewed. I favour artists who understand what the gallery is presenting and see their work in the context of the gallery. I select three project shows each year that are in line with the aims of the exhibition program. The project shows have allowed the gallery to foster new talent and to select artists to join the gallery. As an extension of this successful approach and to celebrate the past 6 years of projects, the gallery has introduced The Project Wall, located in the stock room, which currently has the second presentation for 2012 Thomas C. Chung ” Do You Know Where I Am ?”
4) What is the philosophy of the space/gallery?
The aim of the exhibition program is to nurture the careers of the artists whilst developing and fostering relationships with curators, collectors, and other artists. Critical acclaim is a further goal and is achieved by the placement of works in important public and private collections as well as inclusion in curated exhibitions in both national and regional galleries.
5) If you can, what advise can you give to an artist looking for representation, and what would it be?
Research a gallery. Understand what work is being presented and then pitch your work along the lines of the established exhibition criteria at the gallery you are interested in. Never cold call or drop in on a director unannounced.
6) It is a hard market out there, how are you finding it?
I have spent the last six years building my business and there is a confidence in my reputation and therefore the market place. Last year I was nominated for a Sydney Business Award which reflects the work I have done to date. I am happy to report that my business has grown each year, as have the artist who I represent. I am also a niche market business presenting quality work at entry level prices from $ 1,000 – $ 5,000. If you are presenting quality work, nurture your artists, and have strong client services, I think you can adapt to the new economic climate.
7) What do you find hard when working with artists?
Some artists are difficult and do not understand the partnership between an artist and Director. There is always a fluidity to representation, I have had some artists leave, and I have let some go.
You find those who you enjoy working with, and then you have the mutually beneficial arrangement of commercial representation.
8) There are so many empty spaces out there that could be used for the arts, what are your thoughts?
These spaces should be activated and licensed for use for artists as studios or for presentation of projects. Chambers of Commerce and Local Government are embracing this. More work need to be done to get Landlords to understand the benefits.
9) There are plenty of ARI (Artist run initiatives) out there, What are you thoughts on these spaces vs Commercial galleries?
I think ARI”s are a very important and integral part of the system. FIRST DRAFT, Pelotin, ALASKA PROJECTS, and SNO are good examples of Committee runs ARI’s that afford artists platforms to present work and experiment with their practice. There have also been many successful ARI’s over the years. What I think is important to remember is that ARI’s, especially if funded through government grant money, should remain accountable and transparent, and not become fiefdoms for individual agendas. I also don’t think ARI’s should try and be both ARI and commercial gallery, as inevitably they are not successful at either. The lines become blurred as to what they really are. You don’t see commercial galleries trying to be ARI’s, and the same applies to ARI’s trying to be commercial galleries yet reliant on government funding rather than commercial criteria.
10) Melbourne vs Sydney how do you see the arts and the major differences?
Both have excellent galleries, artists, and institutions in my opinion.
11) Social media is everywhere, do you use it and does it help?
I use social media to promote the gallery and artists and think it is an excellent platform for positive public relations, and the dissemination of information to a wide public platform.
12) What art do you have on your wall at home and your office?
I have works by the gallery artists that I have purchased for my private collection. I also buy works from other galleries, which is the same advice I give my clients. I have works by Jonathan Jones purchased for Gallery Barry Keldoulis, I have a Lionel Bawden work that came from a show at The Paper Mill (ARI) purchased through Grantpirrie, and I have a Sally Gabori purchased from Tim Melville Gallery in NZ. I also have a Ken Whisson that was purchased from the Estate of Ann Lewis A.O.
13) What shows are coming up over the next couple of months?
Two exciting shows coming up are SIX YEARS OF PROJECTS (Part 1) and (Part 2). Over the last six years project shows have allowed the gallery to foster new talent and to select artists to join the gallery. Part 1 (Wed 20 June 2012 – 8 July 2012) will be artists who have joined the gallery, and Part 2 (Wed 15 August 2012 – 9 Sept 2012) will be artists who have had project shows who have gone on to successful representation at other galleries, like Chris Firmstone, who is represented by Yuill Crowley. The gallery is also presenting at the Melbourne Art Fair in August, which is a highlight of the program this year.
14) Where can we find you?
Suite 4, Level One, 111 Macleay Street Potts Point, NSW 2011. The gallery is located on the first floor of the Minerva Building – the landmark art deco building on the corner of Macleay and Orwell Streets, Potts Point. The entrance is the first green door in Orwell Street next to Booty, and come up to the first floor.

dLux is thrilled to announce it after a bit of a struggle in the past year with triennial funding from the Visual
Arts Board being cut, dLux MediaArts is well back on track with a superb new initiative combining art,
science and technology to reach regional and rural Australia.
Looking “outside the square” for ways to meaningfully and sustainably create pathways to learning and develop
cultural practice using digital media has proven fruitful with a significant grant having just been announced for Unlocking Australia’s Potential.
Through The Department of Industry, Innovation, Science, Research and Tertiary Education we will be Inspiring
Australia over the next 3 years around the country with our mobile multi media dLab, getting hard to reach youth
interested and engaged with science through art, technology and a unique methodology.
A total of $5 million has been awarded across the country.
The prime objective of the grants program is to increase the engagement of Australians in science and it has
prioritised projects that engage people who may not have had previous access to or interest in science-communication activities.
Inspiring Australia is an initiative of the Australian Government.

I was born in a small town in Southern Ontario, Canada which i
left when i was eighteen to study art at York University in Toronto.
Since then I have lived much of my life out of a backpack; currently
residing in Sydney Australia. My desire to travel has taken me
around the world exploring and observing and my love of line
and a vivid imagination has taken me to far away worlds. I’ve
had a pencil in my hand as far back as i can remember. I am
currently working as a full time artist out of Lennox Street Studios
in Newtown.
2) Explain Your Current Body of Work?
I just finished a series of portraits on clay board. Using pencil
and water based paint (gouache and sometimes acrylic) i draw
layers of pencil lines and apply thin layers of paint over top to
add some shape and a bit of colour. Some of the figures have
similarities to my own appearance but they are not specifically
self portraits. I use the figures from my imagination to express a
range of emotion and psychological states. A representation of the
mental reality of the human in the picture is more important to me
than a simple physical rendering. It is very personal work as i have
accessed deep and often dark parts of my psyche; but i believe the
emotional theme is universal.
3) If you can pick one artist as an inspiration and explain why?
Jenny Saville. A contemporary artist working in England.
Why?
One of the first exhibitions I saw in the gallery district of Chelsea,
New York was by Jenny Saville and it was the only time that
artwork has triggered an emotional response in me from the
moment i walked in the gallery. It was a series of larger than
life figures, many self-portraits, painted on huge canvases with
multiple layers of huge brush strokes of oil paint. From the
technique to the subject matter it affected me; the way she applies
the paint, many thin and thick layers on top of each other to
create the skin tones; to the way the figures look like they’ve had
some really tortured existence; the way it makes you go deeper
like you’re seeing directly into this human being’s emotional
experience through the physical being. As an a artist I admire the
painting techniques that create an emotional presence, and as
a human I recognise, feel and relate to the wounded-ness of the
characters; their desperation, and their agony.
4) With your own art practice where would you like to be in 10 years?
On a practical level I’d like to be in a bigger studio and be
experimenting with bigger scale artworks because as I do bigger
work, little by little I have ideas that want to occupy bigger space.
I want to go beyond the 2D surface and I want to spread out and
have a space to do that.
I want to be reaching more people with my art and get to talk
to more people as they see it. The response is something I am
getting more out of as people are relating to the work in deeply
emotional ways; so I feel that it is contributing in some way to a
need that exists within people. In a way people feel that they are
allowed to respond to art like this. I am accessing things that are
right on the precipice of existence – this is deeper than what I can
talk about but which I can express in my work. It is my journey with
depression and anxiety; and the art opens up a way of dealing
with that both for me as an artist, but also for the people who view
my work and relate to it in some way. It might start as a personal
journey, but when shown it becomes a conversation had with
others. The art opens up something. I want to be more honest with
my artwork, myself and in sharing the experience with others.
5) How are you finding the current art market?
I’ve just presented my most personal work ever at the last
show and sold more than I expected. I am not connected to a
commercial gallery at present, so am not directly affected by the
market as such. I have built up my own personal following of
people that have connected with the work and continue to come to
shows, and buy at a pace they feel comfortable with according to
their own interests. I am lucky to be in a position where I just go to
my studio and do what I do and manage to get enough sold to fund
the next creative venture. I’ve managed to get by so far, and as
long as the ideas keep coming I am engaged as an artist.
6) Name four things that you cannot do without in the Studio?
Pencils – sometimes a single line can evoke emotion.
Clayboard – which is my new love. Sometimes inspiration comes
from the surface itself, and for me right now that is clayboard.
Water – I can push my technique on clayboard much further with
water. And i drink a lot of water too.
My Vacuum Cleaner – because I am a neurotic obsessive and
need to get up randomly and vacuum until the air feels clear.
7) Is social media a help or a hinder for the arts and what are you thoughts?
Yes social media has been very helpful for me. People can see
artwork through postings by artists themselves or blog postings
by others that they otherwise would not. Through facebook I am
reaching strangers around the world in countries that I haven’t
even been to. There are so many ways to reach people; you put
your info/images up somewhere, and if someone takes an interest
in you and then they send it out to more people, and other people
take interest then word can spread. I would not say it is just one
thing such as FaceBook, as many of my collectors don’t even
use that – but being a subject of blogs and being seen as actively
participating in the art world is useful for getting exposure and reaction.
8) What was the funniest thing you’ve heard someone say about your own work
My work is pretty serious at the moment and I can’t think of any
funny reactions but some people really do connect to it deeply
and that is satisfying for me. I’ve had people that I haven’t
even met say really cool things on social media. One ‘fan’ said
that by looking at my work she feels that ‘she is me and i am
her’ ..facsinating. I would like to meet her someday. It has been
said that my work is beautiful but tortured, and I’m ok with that
because this body of work is.
9) What is next on the agenda?
I am travelling to Toronto, Canada to do a one month artist
residency in a small creative community on Toronto Island, which
will result in a show in Toronto. I am currently putting my work into
some competitions and group shows… I don’t make too many
plans – things come. I’d like to have another major show next
year but I don’t know where or when that will be yet — I like some
mystery to the ‘what’s next’ question. Right now the focus is a
couple of commissioned works, developing new ideas and then the
residency.
10) What’s your advice to children who want to be artists?
Go for it. Never let anyone tell you that what you create is wrong in
any way. Draw from your heart and learn to be confident with that.
Create if you want to and don’t if you don’t. Drawing is therapeutic.
It is a form of expression just like talking, so it can’t be right or
wrong. It is totally valid to believe you are an artist no matter what
anyone says. I think everyone is an artist in some way. Do art
school or not – just be true to your own ideas and expression. Art
comes in so may different forms. Just because there are some
artists who win prizes and get recognized and some that don’t,
there are many reasons for that, it’s not to do with the quality of
expression. The point is to be engaged with art as a practice, and
not with the outcomes.

Street Annual Studio Show in November 2012.

Closing Night Gala – Safety Not Guaranteed
“WANTED: Someone to go back in time with me. This is not a joke. You’ll get paid after we get back.
Must bring your own weapons. Safety not guaranteed. I have only done this once before.”
This unusual classified ad inspires three cynical Seattle magazine employees to look for the story behind it.
They set out for the scenic seaside community of Ocean View and embark on a comical adventure. Darius
(Aubrey Plaza, of hit television comedy Parks and Recreation) is a disillusioned college graduate who interns at the magazine.
She’s joined by a fellow intern, the very serious Arnau (Karan Soni), and their boozy boss, Jeff (Jake Johnson),
and the three go about some clumsy investigative journalism. Jeff is apparently only interested in the story
so he can hook up with an old flame who lives in Ocean View, so Darius and Arnau are left largely to their own devices.
They find an eccentric named Kenneth (Mark Duplass, mumblecore pioneer and co-director of SFF film Jeff, Who Lives at Home),
a supermarket clerk who believes he’s solved the riddle of time travel and intends to depart again soon.
Safety Not Guaranteed is a surprising and very funny sci-fi comedy with heart.

Factory 49 Paris
Factory 49 wants to open a Showroom in Paris to be run in a similar fashion to our
Sydney Showroom. We have found a space to buy and need the funds to do that.
Factory 49 is a registered “not-for-profit” organisation which has been running very
successfully for 6 years in Sydney. It is run by a committee of mature artists.
Paris is chosen as a venue because Factory 49 has already built up a network due to
the Director visiting 2 months each year for the past 6 years. Paris is also a perfect
city for a stepping stone to other European countries. This will enable Australian
artists to have a much larger profile and help them professionally.
FACTORY 49 AIMS AND OBJECTIVES:
1. establish and promote artistic activities related to the guiding principles of the
international art movement known as either non-objective art, geometric art, abstract art or non realistic art.
2. provide a Showroom and outdoor Walls for the mounting of works and installations that
display historical and contemporary artworks within the traditions of abstraction.
3. provide a platform for visiting artists of national and international stature with
associated free residencies and lectures, thus becoming part of a large network and exchange.
4. bring emerging artists into a close relationship with other mature or visiting artists,
writers and curators from around NSW, interstate and overseas, & promote them locally & internationally.
6. co-ordinate an educational program for Primary children as well as a local community program
to introduce contemporary art. Outreach to University students seeking to affiliate or
broaden their understanding of such regional activities.
7. gain a wider critical acceptance of abstract art while further developing artists profiles.
8. establish an archive that documents images, videos, catalogues, texts, articles and books.
9. publish a Year Book every 12 months as well as all of the normal material for shows.
10.seek grants from NSW Ministry of the Arts, Marrickville Council and private sponsors.

Call out for artists to do art in squatted spaces
Fire Gallery will start it’s string of art exhibitions in squatted art spaces. The first of many will be in Newtown. Our crew is looking for all sorts of artists to work with odd spaces doing graffiti, stencils, murals, performances or art installations…or anything creative you may want to do.
The reason behind this project is to make art spaces available to artists. Such spaces would otherwise remain unused and abandoned. Anyone participating in this project needs to understand the legal implications attached to trespassing if caught by police. However, most times police will only ask you to move on and only the art organisers will be left to deal with the consequences. Living in fear is for losers so get onboard and do some cool art projects with Little Fish. Everyone is welcome to participate and all ideas and proposals will be considered.
This project will also be highlighting exploitation against artists by the art world where artists need to hire a space and also pay commissions on sales of artworks.
All we can say is there are too many shows to see this week! So have a read, pick a few and make that journey in the rain to support the arts in Sydney.
When you pick your Vivid Ideas discussion or talk make sure you book your seat at the follow link.
The Prince of Wales Hospital Foundation is looking for a new resident artist or photographer
to brighten up the corridors of the Prince of Wales Hospital. For more information check out the ‘things of interest’ at the end of this post.

The Museum of Contemporary Art Australia opened its doors in March to great public acclaim as a bold new museum for contemporary art and creative learning. With new galleries, enhanced facilities for the public and dedicated facilities for our education programs, the possibilities that the new MCA offers are almost endless. The expanded facilities provide us with the opportunity to meet the increasing interest in contemporary art and the ever growing demand for our programs. With the building complete, it’s now time to focus back on the art and delivering our ground breaking programs.
Occupying 40% of the new wing, the National Centre for Creative Learning is a dynamic and innovative space for learning. The centre is equipped with state-of-the art technology and holds digital and multimedia studios, two practical creative studios, a lecture theatre, seminar room and library. It also houses the Bella Room, a multi-sensory learning and exhibition space for the MCA’s Bella program.
The Bella Program offers workshops to young people who have little or no access to museums and cultural institutions. These children may be experiencing physical, intellectual, emotional or behavioural disabilities, or are disadvantaged due to their financial, social or geographic situation.
The MCA is dedicated to creating accessibility to contemporary art for all and the Bella Program is a vital part of this mission. The Bella workshops were initiated by patrons Cynthia Jackson AM and the late Dr Edward Jackson AM in 1993 and the new facilities give the MCA the opportunity to run this program year round. However, more workshops mean we need to raise more money to fund the program.
Our Annual Appeal this year is therefore focused on the Bella Program – to provide free workshops throughout the year to these very special young people.
Donating to the MCA Annual Appeal is easy and all donations are tax deductible, just click on the link https://app.etapestry.com/bbphosted/nl_mca/OnlineDonation.html. If you have any questions about supporting the MCA please call Lisa Hamilton, Philanthropy Manager on 02 9245 2414 or email development@mca.com.au. I hope you can support this incredible program. With best wishes,
Elizabeth Ann Macgregor OBE Director

OF LIGHT – Call for Artists! CALL FOR EXHIBITION PROPOSALS: (invite your artistic friends & lovers to the event!)
YOLK Collective invites emerging artists of a range of mediums to submit proposals for our group exhibition ‘OF LIGHT’ before June 6th 2012.
The General Public, particularly tertiary students and graduates, are encouraged to apply. Collaborative projects are also welcomed. Unfettered by medium, we are open to artists working within a variety of disciplines, traditional to experimental.
Exhibition details: ‘OF LIGHT’ will be the debut exhibition curated and mediated by the newly formed YOLK Collective. It is an exhibition centered on manipulations of light, luminosity and electricity. This is a broad theme encompassing works that conceptualise notions of light, and explore visual elements of contrast and chiaroscuro, while also encompassing works using lights or mediums of a luminescent nature.
To accompany the exhibition YOLK Collective will provide an extensive catalogue/magazine at the expense of the Collective to highlight the artists exhibited and other written components we have created. This will be freely distributed around Sydney.
The exhibition will be held at ‘The Barn’ in Mosman at the cost of the Collective over the duration of three days (13-15 July 2012). We are limited to the space and hanging devices at the location. There will be an opening event that will also be the launch of the Collective.
Who are YOLK Collective?
YOLK Collective is a not-for-profit collective comprised of three Art Theory students from COFA.
YOLK Collective’s objective is to create opportunities and editorial for emerging artists.
We also write artist profiles, exhibition reviews, quirky articles, essays, and some of our
projects include small focus exhibitions and events.
- Our written content is also published on our blog: http://yolkcollective.blogspot.com.au/ & supplementary materials on our twitter, facebook, pinterest and instagram. To enquire about proposals/curatorial theme, please contact YOLK Collective at yolkcollective@gmail.com
Please email proposal submissions to yolkcollective@gmail.com
INCLUDE: 2 x high-resolution images of the works with full details (name, year, materials, dimensions), your CV, contact details and a short summary of why you think your works fit the exhibition’s theme ‘OF LIGHT.’ Entries close 06/06/2012 (The earlier you enter the more publicity and editorial we may be able to provide for you).
